I was at this concert and I can tell you that absolutely none of it was staged or manipulated. Jacob wasn’t even supposed to be there and his presence was unadvertised. The audience was there for Laufey and Dodie. It was not an audience of musicians or a Jacob Collier audience. I don’t think half the people even knew who he was. The fact that he had to urge them to increase the energy at one point shows that they aren’t audience choir veterans. I know you won’t believe it, but it is possible for 2,000 strangers to find the groove and produce exactly what you saw. I’m not sure how it happens or how he does it, but I’ve seen him in concert three times within the last year and every time the audience choir just clicks into place. You’re an accomplished musician so you’re seeing it through a technical lens (as he does), but there’s something else going on there that is almost mystical, which is why you’ll see lots of people in tears during his choirs. It just happens. It’s a mystery. You might check out the videos of the audience choirs in Barcelona, Lisbon, or London to see it in action. On his current global tour for his album I think there was a good one in San Francisco and also in Helsinki. There’s more going on here than just singing.

That absolutely blows my mind. The skeptic in me really wanted there to be sheet music involved.

@@KevinFry-ub4ck Thank you! And congratulations for having experienced that concert! I will get to go to a Jacob Collier concert in November and I have been low key happy for over a month already in expectation. :) Looking for good concert earplugs since I react badly to really loud locations, and still wanna be able to take in every smallest nuance. :)

If you haven't seen/heard it, Jacob did a similar thing in his "Little Blue (Mahogany Sessions)" video - he directed a chorus of non-professional singers and then ended up coming back in with a guitar and it was all perfectly in tune. Wizardry!

I'm guessing you haven't seen many of his concerts where he creates audience choirs? I've seen him do it so many times creating seemingly impossible audience harmonies that I don't find this as difficult to believe as you do. After all, Jacob was conducting/guiding the audience to the correct key.

truly blows my mind...so much that I can't believe it just happens serendipitously XD

He does the audience choir at all his performances now. I’ve now been to three and while musicians definitely make up a large percentage of his audience, there is no picking and choosing and planting people. He works with what he has. This performance (by the audience) is extremely sub-par from what I’m used to hearing from his audience. They actually needed to be encouraged to sing louder and keep the choir going, something that would never happen at a concert of his fans. He even sings a few extra notes with the audience when they get slightly lost. This Kennedy audience was very reserved and it felt like he was pulling teeth to get them to sing. Explore his other work. It will be worth your time.

This is a super neat and informed comment and I really appreciate you taking the time to explain this experience to me! I will take a look at some of his other choral performances!

It's also helpful to consider that Jacob's live audiences have some of the highest numbers of "people who do music" attending out of all artists out there, proportionally speaking. This probably helps in granting his audiences an effective enough capacity of always being where they need to be note-wise. If you watch some of his other audience choir videos, you will be able to spot many instances of audience members singing actual harmonies as opposed to just single notes.

This is CRAZY COOL. Collier audiences are BUILT DIFFERENT.

I get why it would seem pre-arranged in some way, it's wild to think that this can grow out organically, but it's just a matter of statistics. Of course a whole lot of people aren't singing the right note, but those that do all sing the SAME note, whereas the people that are off are all off in their own way. So it cancels out, the people who are in tune will ALWAYS drown out the others precisely because of that cumulative effect.

This truly blows my mind. Choir is truly a magical thing for that reason!

unfortunately this happens when Jacob does his stuff. It's so amazing, that reactions to it are sometimes cynical. Which is a shame because he is a genius at inspiring people to let go of their inhibitions and just sing. Just believe in that. 😍

Could you please sing this song so we can hear your choices musically. What makes this great is their choices, including breathing …
@crrissa_the_cyberbard2 ай бұрын
You are not wrong! Their choices are their own and that's what makes them wonderful! I was speaking from a limited point of view and from a vocal "function" perspective! :)

'Don't be mad at me', but you completely missed Jacob's harmony on the second and third chorus, which is the interesting bit! 9:36. And, get over 'mountain', it's fine, they all hit 't' together and it works. Jacob doesn't do conventional rules...Sceptical? Hmmm...
