Fantastic. Do you think anyone has been to this area of the cave before? Epic!!! Love the groove passage. What is the piece of rappel gear you are using? It looks like a Petzl stop with a handle. My Petzl Stop is from about 1993...
@EvenDarker Жыл бұрын
Yeah probably other people have been in there but it is relatively new. The cave is just so big that new areas get discovered. But almost every iteration of the map does not have some of the places we were able to find. And I think that room even goes further but you're limited with time because it takes so long to get in there. Every generation of gear changes. Pretzels new stop decenders are different yet. It's mostly for convenience and safety because the reality is you can still get through most of this cave if you were just really good with a rope.

Cool video. Just one comment or something to think about. I don't do any rock climbing etc, but I did watch another video and they made a comment about the locking carabiners and they were suggesting to orient it so that you spun the locking mechanism down so it would have to fight gravity to go back up to be able to unlock. Just another layer of safety I suppose and simple to do.

when there's already bolts in the wall by a descent, do you just trust the previous person's work or do you put your own into the wall? Can you show yourself putting the bolts in one day? I'm really curious how it's done.
@EvenDarker Жыл бұрын
Yeah those bolts are pretty old! I don't have the equipment to set bolts so if they don't exist I use boulders. Sometimes both. Setting bolt is not difficult though there's just a gun you take or a drill. Basalt rock is very hard and you set the bolts nice and deep so even if they're old and rickety they're not coming out.
@DanielM-il4rz Жыл бұрын
Just a quick question; I notice that you, as well as Jacob explore a lot of lava cast..I hope “cast” is the right word, caves,…Are these tunnels in the Utah, USA area?? I’m just guessing..I am very curious as to where the geography of most of these lava tunnels are located. Keep the great videos coming. I know they are a labor of love, yet still hard work with all that is involved in producing great videos. 👍 just fyi, I am watching from Biloxi, Mississippi, USA..it’s all flat Gulf of Mexico water/land here..in fact, I live about 15minutes (drive) from the Gulf of Mexico and about 45minutes (drive) from New Orleans, USA. (Low lying area, swamp creatures like alligators and snakes, etc…)😊
@EvenDarker Жыл бұрын
It's a quick question but it will not have a quick answer. We use the word cast but the proper term is actually mold. Tree mold. I just don't like the way the word mold sounds. Sometimes we call them tree ghosts. Anywhere there is volcanoes and lava Fields you could find tree casts. However, the vast amounts of log jams is unique to the lava fields in the Pacific northwest. Utah is a wonderful state for caving with a lot of big Limestone caves. I suspect you would have tree casts but they might not be very easy to locate unless you are a member of a caving group. Not every volcanic cone or lava field even has Caves at all. It depends on the depth and the nature of the lava. And even if you do find them sometimes they aren't very big or interesting.

We list a lot of our gear in the video descriptions. I'm not sure on this video. We have more gear than you could ever imagine. But the main reason we don't is because we don't want to. We're not KZbinrs and so this is just our life and periodically we make videos of it. But I try not to do anything for "youtube" or by request. We're not negative about it we're just busy. I have a whole life and Jacob has a whole life. Jacob's at prom tonight! Our time is limited to occasionally caving and making videos of those adventures. But maybe if we get real bored! : )

This might be a stupid question, but I wonder if you guys ever get scared in the caves... If so, would you mind telling what you think causes it? Thank you in advance!
@EvenDarker Жыл бұрын
Not usually. In fact it never occurred to me that any of this should be scary. I only learned about that from reading KZbin comments. We are here because it's fun and relaxing. The only time I remember being afraid was when I was with some new cavers and some boulders came down on one of them and I thought that he might die but Jacob and I were able to unbury him. I don't know whose fault that was but it's never happened to me or any experienced cavers. The only defense against that kind of panic is just to be patient. Most of the bad situations in life can be overcome if a person just slows their mind down a little bit. Don't be in such a hurry to leave a bad situation and you will get out just the same and without the panic.

The cave is awesome!! One question…… why would you wear a jumpsuit type clothing in a cave when you don’t know if there is tight passages that you might need to pull something off to fit? They looked good but?? Glad you had a great time !’
@EvenDarker Жыл бұрын
It's funny usually people ask why we don't wear jumpsuits and they complain that we are wearing other clothes. It's much easier with vertical gear to wear a jumpsuit so the gear doesn't get caught in your shirt or pants. Plus this cave is almost freezing so it's an extra layer of waterproofing and warmth. If a passage is tight I actually don't like to wear a jumpsuit. I like to wear a bag of sweater which might seem counterintuitive to people who haven't crawled through a tight passage. But that's what works for me. I like to say whatever you see us wearing is exactly what is necessary for the cave we are in.
