I like the analogy of "trusting in the rungs". Not just believing that the ladder is there, but putting your full weight, and your life on those rungs.

One aspect I like about Jacob in the Bible is that he is reasonable with being content with faith in God. As the Bible says, "Then Jacob made a vow, saying, "If God will be with me and will watch over me on this journey I am taking and will give me food to eat and clothes to wear so that I return safely to my father's household, then the LORD will be my God" (Genesis 28:20-21). In the New Covenant Scriptures, we are told to have an attitude like Jacob, "But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing we will be content with that." -- (1 Timothy 6:6-8). Jacob was content with his reasonable demand from God. Even so, God blessed Jacob with more than just food and clothing for his hard, diligent work and faithful obedience to what he knew to obey about God. In fact, Jacob is a good example of what the Bible says, "...but to the sinner he gives the task of gathering and storing up wealth to hand it over to the one who pleases God..." (Ecclesiastes 2:26). Jacob's uncle, Laban, was a sinner to Jacob. As Jacob said about Laban to Rachel, "You know that I've worked for your father with all my strength, yet your father has cheated me by changing my wages ten times." -- (Genesis 31:6-7). God blessed Jacob as a result and allowed Jacob to bless himself in clever ways to attain most of Laban's sheep (Genesis 31:10-13), as the Bible says, "So God has taken away your father's livestock and has given them to me." -- (Genesis 31:9).

You are very welcome! It is a wonderful picture and analogy. How great is the mediating role of Christ to allow us to come to the Father through Him!

Hi Bro. Guzik, I am teaching a Sunday School series on Genesis and am just a few chapters ahead of you. I am presently working on a lesson for Genesis 35 when Jacob returns to Bethel. Some say Jacob was disobedient for going to Shalem/Shechem instead of Bethel. Some commentaries seem incredibly colored by this view. However, I don't see anything specific about returning to Bethel until the Lord told him to in Genesis 35. What is your view on this? Because Jacob responded with obedience when he was told to go there, it seems that if he was told earlier then he would have obeyed then. Anyways, I enjoy reading your commentary and messages and hope you could provide a little insight on this. Thank you!

Jesus is the ladder. Maybe it has more than 6 steps. Or 7. But the 8th would be the first. All those blessings offered by grace. But like most of us, Jacob does the foolish thing by saying he will accept the free gifts, but only after God does a few things for him. (Queen Elizabeth still had that supposed stone under her throne until 2 or 3 years ago. Charles moved it to Scotland where it lies outdoors.) For a long time, i wondered if this stone had 7 holes like eyelets, but I can't see any.

Hi pastor David, will you be doing all of the OT?
@DavidGuzikEnduringWord Жыл бұрын
Pastor David will probably switch between an OT and NT book for these in-depth video-commentaries. Genesis will be at least another 18 weeks, but after that it is not likely that he will go right into Exodus, or that he will be able to complete the entire OT or NT in video form anytime soon, owing to his busy schedule.
