As a Ranger fan and a long time defender of Trouba, I’m a bit torn. They definitely had to move him, the organization had clearly soured on him. He’s extremely physical, sacrifices the body, and keeps the other team’s head on a swivel when entering the zone. But at the same time, his play last season and this season has been abysmal. Very poor in a lot of areas (moving the puck in the defensive zone and defending the rush the biggest two) and has almost zero offensive upside to his game. Yes, he’s the captain and yes he was an identity guy for the team, but at the end of the day, he’s a massive liability both on the balance sheet and on the ice. My only worry is what this does to the morale of the locker room moving forward.

Trouba is not a defensive defenseman. He was traded to the Rangers to be their #1 defenseman & run the offense, but emergence of DeAngelo & Adam Fox relegated Trouba to the 2nd pairing. Of course Deangelo couldn't stick with the team and Fox won Norris in his 2nd year, and Trouba was getting paid like a #1 D. His offensive skill diminished and he gets caught out of position too often to be considered a solid D

It's also a W for the ducks though. They desperately need physicality and leadership. They don't need Trouba point production, they have that from their young D. Them taking on the full 8 mil doesn't matter, cap is going up and ducks have 20mil in cap. He would've never signed with ducks anyways as an RFA so that's how you get it done. They need a culture shift and this will provide that. Rangers W for well, all the reasons you stated.

What point production? The Ducks are probably the worst all around offensive team in the league and that includes defense, the team is just awful and coached by an absolute clown. Verbeek is also a clown, the team is closer to another rebuild than any semblance of competency. Me like big hits and intangibles, is basically the only defense of this trade, Trouba has been awful, he's 3rd worst in most defensive metrics this year and Fowler is 2nd and now they're both on the same team! Think it's a good trade on both sides. Realistically the Ducks had to take the whole contract to make a future trade with Fowler possible. Fast forward to next year, Trouba as a rental should net more than Vaaks and a 4th on the market.

It was the shiny toy they got, it was the building block the team needed, legitimized them as a organization that was serious and a guy who was still wearing the C for captain on his jersey. If my team traded the captain away I'd be furious not just cause of his talent but what a captain is supposed to mean to your organization and you ship him off to Anaheim after telling the Rangers fan base he's a healthy scratch and or we may just put him on waivers. One thing not talked about for this trade is the impact it might have on the player’s around the league (UFAs) perception of Rangers management. NY first waived Goodrow in the offseason to work around his NTC and now just traded their captain. Paraphrasing here, but Trouba essentially said that NY management threatened him to waive his NTC or he’d be put on waivers. If they’re willing to trade their captain, is anyone really safe in NY? UFAs might be more hesitant to sign in NY if it means they might be disrespected in the future with these kinds of trades.

There are fines for not spending a certain percentage of your cap money. Ducks just push themselves a hair over that line, so a solid defensemen, avoid fines for underspending, not a great move for the future but should be a solid add for Ducks for 2-3 more seasons.

Vaaks is decent but we always scratched him for younger players. The 4th round pick is no big deal. I’m happy for the ducks to get another vet in the locker room. Will be great for the young ducks to learn how to play tough defense.

If I was the Ducks I wouldn’t have taken him even if NY threw in a first. They need to re-sign Mctavish and it’s probably gonna be a bridge deal. Ducks have too many bridge deals IMO and will struggle later when their young guys develop. This is a very high risk trade for them with very low reward. The argument of “Trouba being a leader” is laughable and a bit old style thinking to where the game is today. Let alone that Trouba in all reality is not really a leader and just hits anything that moves. He didn’t even have an A in Winnipeg when he was part of the team that made it to the semis. The ducks had all the leverage here and did not use it at all.

We already have far more than enough money to sign who needs to be signed this year and he comes off next year so its fine for our cap position. Other rebuilding teams want him so there is competition. Good leadership and sets the tone for what we want to do anyway. Makes it easy to trade at deadline rather than having the play the salary floor.

I think it is ridiculous that Anaheim did the Rangers a favor by taking the ENTIRE contract and didn't get something legitimate along with the contract. It is like a Chuck Fletcher deal. I don't think youre really looking at the big picture here. Notice how NY fans are not upset at all. That's because this is awesome for us. It opens up room for for a couple of our young D to get more ice, it opens up a good chunk of cap, so maybe we turn around and use that towards someone else later on like the dude in the video said and most importantly it hopefully ends the mind fuck of who's on the chopping block creating a shit storm in our locker room and then on to the ice. At the end of the day adding Trouba the ducks are still going to be holding it down in the basement and we hope it gets us back into looking like a contender again.
