Epsiode 28 - Owning a Borzoi - Can you have a cat with a Borzoi?

Mine plucks birds out of the air. Many sighthounds are good with their own cat in the house, not outdoors. My greyhounds were cat tested before they were adopted. Testing is done with muzzles on the hounds.

I don't have a borzoi but I want one some day in the future when I have the means to take care of one. I have a cat of my own right now. She's 2 and she's lived with a small dog before, and one of her favorite ways to play with the dog was to run away and play chase. Part of me wants to believe that if I get a borzoi I can trust that they'll learn not to chase the cat if I teach them not to, but then another part of me says its not worth the risk. I'm so torn because I've wanted a borzoi for years now, but I already have a cat so she comes first.

I completely understand your situation and have a similar problem where I have 2 cats and one is much more outgoing of a cat but one is more of a scardy cat but as you said our cats come before any want for a borzoi!

Arlo loves my 12 year old cat jasper. Jasper doesn't mind Arlo. Jasper is a couch potato and I've only seen him run fast once... Cheers from Australia!

Our Borzoi is great with cats indoors and any cat she sees outdoors she is lovely.

My greyhound is fine with cats indoors, but even in that case, I would keep the cat and dog separated by a baby gate anytime we weren't home. (Outdoors is a different story - sometimes she ok but not always.)

I've heard it said more than once in the past that Borzoi do best with Maine Coon cats. Don't know why that might be but they are a large breed and also very mellow. Perhaps they are less likely to trigger Borzoi prey instincts?

Borzois are said to be the cats of the dog breeds while Maine coons are said to be the dogs of the cat world so I guess they meet in the middle.

Thank you for the info! I own 6 birds, but I absolutely love borzois. I'm planning on taking the plunge next year, but have been nervous about the introduction/desensitizing to my birds. Two of them are companion parrots, so they're fully flighted. I'm thinking it may have to be a 'only one species out at a time' situation so there's no overlap... I like the idea of introducing with a muzzle- and maybe having the birds fly around the room a lot while she's still a puppy?

The more you can expose them when they are young in a controlled setting the better! that's what we've been doing with Celes and our cat, it's been a couple months, and now the cat is "meh".

my Boiz did love cuddling with my felines indoors on their couch in the basement. I did not let my felines outdoors except to romp in the snow. They are sight hounds and hunt.

I slept on the couch for the first month and a half, but our cat had no fear of dogs. Our pooper leaves the cat alone unless cat hunts Shitzu. Jacob,you need to make more videos to like

and yet, these cute-pretty and at the same time elegant, sophisticated and aristocratic creatures are rabid fast hunters. Do you have the opportunity to taking your dogs to hunt for maintain of the correct breed characteristics? or is it now only in Russia that the breed standard is maintained, but in the United States these proud aristocrats of hunting have turned just in beautiful sofa- doggies?
