In school, if i hadn't read independently, I'd have thought US history went from the Revolution through the Civil War, then went straight to WWII.

We need to study Foner and Richard White very closely. Reconstruction and the birth of the first Gilded Age. Many lessons for today.

Great program. Great questions from Ana.

I'm so confused....the video is called "why socialists should study reconstruction", but socialists are never mentioned even once. Am I missing something? Am I just dumb? What does this video have to do with socialists?

My ancestors were part of the original antifascists, the Red String Raiders in Kentucky. They fought the Klan before, during, and after the war. Still fighting.

According to the Marxists, it was the Union who were fascist capitalists. The Confederates were feudal.

Same message as before essentially: Give people something to vote for that addresses their material needs. I love theory but let’s try to avoid overthinking this.

Oh Yes! Lets get more Ivy League Profs tell us how to be socialists! I question the reliability of Ivy League grads. They are part of a club that doesn't represent me.

This comment makes no sense to this video content. The Reconstruction material is valuable. That's not a negotiable fact.

LOL they are reaching out trying to build a coalition bro, relax. This sort of content is every bit as much nerd food as it is political agitation. We are going to need the hearts and minds of some educated, relatively well off people if you have any hope for the ballot box. As a leftie you should because if the US falls apart it won't be a worker's paradise that rises from the ashes.

Mostly I agree with you but Eric Foner is pretty good and did the research that helped overturn the misconceptions about reconstruction and the populist movement that students could find in older history textbooks. Many socialist leaning people are employed by or work alongside others who are hostile to socialism. I remember Eric Foner's book being used in my community college US history class and it covers labor history very well.

Ken it's possible you may have a point to contribute but this comment did not explain well. Don't underestimate your potential to reach people with a salient point.

Karl Marx attended university, when only the elite attended university. basically Karl Marx was the equivalent of an ivy league professor. do you question the reliability of Karl Marx? we should stop this petty tribalism that does nothing but alienate people that could be a benefit to socialism.

Pretty sad a high school history teacher is getting lesson ideas from a communist professor.
