A tryst is an intimate encounter... A private, romantic rendezvous.

There is a particular reason for the build up musically and groaning of guitar, pay particular attention to lyrics ( labored breath, sheets are on fire (ablaze) and she's calling his name ) There is a build up within her (; its a very sensual song

The phrase "long-suffering propriety" suggests enduring or patient adherence to social conventions or expectations. In the context of the lyric, it seems to convey the idea of maintaining a certain demeanor or behavior expected by others despite inner turmoil or conflict caused by the haunting presence of someone else. The speaker may be expressing a desire to break free from these expectations and choose their own path, embracing their connection with the person who has haunted them, even if it defies societal norms.
@marymccann96768 ай бұрын
To add to this, I also think in this context that it's referring to her being expected to stay single and sad in a "mourning period" for her long-term relationship, almost like a death. What we've seen through Taylor's music, however, is that she was mourning in the process of the slow deterioration of her relationship with Joe, so she felt she'd spent enough time hiding and sad.

Funny part with Downtown Lights is that it is off the Album Hats released in 1989. The cover art for Hats has the black silhouette of a man’s head in a hat very similar to the background people in the Fortnight video typewriter scene.

"Tryst" typically refers to a secret meeting, especially between lovers. It often carries a connotation of romantic or clandestine rendezvous, suggesting a meeting that is planned in advance and kept private from others. 🤣

It's funny you said that you love 1975 while reacting to Guilty As Sin 😉 There's A LOT of songs for Matty Healy on this Album, THIS ONE as well 😅

@@jensen6929 I think people who actually care about that stuff are crazy, but I think that knowing a lot of these songs are about matty healy (specifically but daddy i love him, the title track, and but the smallest man who ever lived) actually enhance the song in my opinion and add some context. Like but daddy i love him actually makes very little sense without knowing about the fan reaction to their relationship last summer, and the title track (the tortured poets department) purposefully sounding like a the 1975 song. Besides just being able to notice that stuff in the music, it doesn’t really matter though
@christinamorgan23157 ай бұрын
A 10 year "wish he would" situationship seems to have inspired a LOT of her music going all the way back to Lover. It's wild how I'm hearing the older tracks differently knowing what we know now.

Tryst is a secret meeting. The one thing I wish had pointed out is that it’s a song about dirty thoughts. Taylor can say so poetically things someone like, say, The Weekend, says very explicitly!!

Love your reactions! I firmly believe that TTPD is influenced by her either preparing to re-record her debut album or the time she's spent looking at the songs that didn't make it into that first album which she's going to add as vault songs. The mix of 80s synths, Folklore-esque folk influences, and the country roots feels sooooo good. Honestly, a bunch of these songs feel like they could have been on Speak Now!

I think this song is about having "passionate" fantasies/daydreams about someone. My bedsheets are ablaze...screamed his name Building up like waves, crashing over my grave (the big O has been described as a "little death") Without ever touching his skin It's very thirsty but tastefully and artfully written, as expected from Taylor. This became a favorite of mine early on. 😝

May I please offer an international observation? I'm from the UK originally. But Europe was my childhood. The reference to "hedge maze" in the UK, a Hedge Maze is a polite way of describing cleverly sculpted female lower body hair. Trying to keep it PG. So... What do you do in a maze? Look for the center, there's always something great there. Next line "Oh what a way to die" The French refer to the completion of an encounter as "La petite mort". The little death. What do you think?
@Oudri12521 күн бұрын
I don't think so. I think it's a reference to her song Labyrinth off of Mastermind.

Taylor was heartbroken from the end to her 6 year relationship with Joe Alwyn, her London boy. She rebounded, with Matty Healy, for a Fortnight, although he led her to believe, after knowing each other over a decade, that she was the love of his life, and it could be long-term. He then crashed, and ran, and ghosted Taylor, claiming she would be better off without him after she was criticized by negative media and her fans for being with Matty. She disagreed, and says she loved him. Later she realized he could NOT be fixed. Many of the tracks are about him, including Smallest Man is about Matty once she realizes this. SO long London was her farewell song to Joe Alwyn. Now she is happily with Travis Kelce, their songs are Alchemy, and So High School are so much happier and loving.

So you mentioned the drums were reminiscent of the 1975. I don’t know if anyone has mentioned this but Taylor has a history of doing stuff like that so it was more than likely intentional. Like what she did with Dear John and how much it sounded like John’s style etc
@JO9OH4TechАй бұрын
Also the song is extremely cohesive. It’s basically about her fantasizing about Matty and masturbating while doing it. Some of the amazing elements to me are The sound is in the style of the 1975 The slow then builds to climax several times in the song The change to a more church sound as she goes into lyrics with religious symbolism Everything she does is pretty intentional. Her attention to detail is absolutely insane.

This is such genius songwriting. It's both about Joe and Matty. > First line, drowning in Blue Nile - alludes to drowning in the sea because of her relationship with Joe, then Matty helping her by sending her a song > Hearing the song she starts daydreaming about an encounter with Matty and how she thirsts over him > However, she wonders if her thirsting over him is just one-sided (What if he just wrote mine on her upper thigh - what if that's just her imagination) > If so she falls back to the hedge maze with Joe, where she is trapped (what a way to die) > Bridge is her wondering if she should just escape Joe (where she feels trapped in a cave, she should be resurrected by rolling the stone away) > But then the public expects "propriety" from her by staying with Joe, and yet she pines for Matty
@thejoeyjason7 ай бұрын
or.....drowning in Blue Nile, he sent me Downtown Lights just simply means she was listening to the band called the Blue Nile coz Matty sent her a song Downtown Lights by the Blue Nile. Nothing complicated about this one. It's just pure coincidence coz we all know whenever there's Blue, Joe's involved.
