I am French, I’m 67 years old and I’ve always loved Jacques Brel . Before going on stage he had so much track that he vomited at every concert.

No one other than Jacques Brel has so deserved and embodied the title of "actor/singer", or rather "singer/actor", as he lives the characters he sings in his live performances. We find this aspect of his personality in songs like "les Vieux", "Amsterdam", "Ne me quitte pas", "Jeff" and so many others. No singer after him has managed to "Play" his songs with such conviction.

I agree, his intensity as an actor/singer is unmatched on stage - by a mile. I thought I would never see anyone comparable. But in musical videos, there is a new guy in town who should be reckoned with, although in a completely different style: Ren. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZDRlGR_i9SArsUsi=76eZ8FB7YTUeWCIi

@@pierrecombelles586 Thank you for saying it! Since my main language is french (and I live in Belgium) I also am impressed by his ability to add nuances and richness even in simple words ...of a non-tonal language ...and at a time where microphone technology was barely able to record the medium range of the voice IF it was loud enough ...so no whispered songs à la Gainsbourg, Voulsy etc. back then. Ren has all modern technology availabale but can still perform live in a mesmerising way ! So it could easily have been a great singer too at that time and it would still be as impressive generations later ^^

In all honesty, for me this is in the top 3 performances of the century. And the lyrics .. the depiction of society (perhaps at that time). Then again, name one Jacques Brel song that isn't pure poetry. It is absolutely mindblowing.

Partly chansons from France, Italy and Belgium were quite popular in Germany in general, partly south-west Germany was a bit more influenced because we share a border with France and our part of Germany was French occupation zone immediately after WWII. Some French chansonniers were appearing in radio and TV quite frequently like Gilbert Becaud, Charles Aznavour, Barbara, Adamo, ... And for those who loved French chansons Jacques Brel and Edith Piaf were true legends. For a long time I didn't see film recordings of his presentations. But just listening to his recordings on album records was painting very visual imaginations. I'm not sure whether "Ne me quite pas" is his most popular song or not. The songs I'm associating with him first are "Amsterdam" and "Mareike". For me he's certainly one of the most fascinating artists. Greetings from Germany

Great reaction to a great artist. At the beginning of his career he spoke French with a heavy Belgian accent. Het had to take lessons to correct that. He was a great storyteller. He wrote about Belgium in the song le plat pay and wrote it also in Flemish het vlakke land. And he performed both versions of it. You can listen and compare. My French geography teacher used that song to describe Belgium. He was obviously a fan. During my formative years I also became a fan.

Thanks for commenting on one of my favorite songs by Brel. (Listening to his full, rich voice and clever lyrics saved me during a hard time in my life, but watching him live must have been a lifetime highlight, especially for those who were there at the Olympia in 1966...) It's interesting because this version seems like such an emotionally intense and almost spontaneous "creation," but Brel practiced relentlessly and toured indefatigably. (And probably drank and smoked a lot after every show, lol...) I love the combination of rigor and poetic inspiration chez lui. It's what moves me so much. He's not just "in the throes of empathy and passion," because he's practiced each perfect gesture so often that it seems totally natural because it is - it has become integrated into his body memory. I've been a little in love with Brassens, Brel and Gainsbourg for my whole adult life beginning in my early 20s, but Brel does something to me that I can't explain. He moves me so deeply. Thanks again for posting this!

Cher toi! Keep shining!

Hey Saeed! I am always impressed about your turn-around with this reactions. And I am glad you are into this your probably most famous countryman. I sometimes need to remind myself, too, that he only had a career of 15 years and produced all this magic in the 50s and 60s. And in my opinion, no one has even come close in all those years. They way he could talk about and interpret what Balzac called " la condition humaine" was amazing, always seeing it from different angles and never forgetting to include himself in it. That is not even considering the raw emotionality that, which by Social Media and sadly not too few artists, too, nowadays hase been turned into mere make-believe. So I guess we will have a few more of these, what do you say? Greetings from Portugal

Here is a singer who puts very high music and wortds, in an unequalled and unrivaled way. Of course, we are far away from classical commercial music or pop music, which has its legitimate place. I am a classical musican (who practiced commercial music and jazz too).

thanks ... this is my favorite song of Jacques Brel .. but lyrics also are great "He would like to look like… But he doesn’t look like at all" "You shouldn’t act rich when you’re without a penny" :)) ...... "The others, they keep saying That she’s too pretty for me! And that all I’m good for Is slitting cats’ throats! I’ve NEVER killed a cat!! Well, maybe a long time ago… Or maybe I’ve forgotten… Or maybe they smelled bad."

Even if you make it wrong on some issues, as... He never care of his apparent ou looking ! So in US shows. Not at all. Did you know that He throws up EACH TIME HE GOES ON STAGE ? So stressed he was. Sorry for my English, but Jacques Brel is, nearly like Sinatra in France, for a certain class of French Intellectual Left People ! Now, you understand why you can't touch HIM !

Aahhh, Jacques Brel! My favorite song is "Amsterdam" ... must look it up in my vinyl collection! (Fun fact: John Denver covered that; I love the guy to pieces, but sorry to say, his voice simply doesn't fit the song, or Brel's style.) Oh, fun fact #2: One Belgian singer, Italian-descended Salvatore Adamo, was a huge star here in Germany in the 1960s ... in three languages, too: French, Italian and German (he covered many of his own songs in German, singing phonetically; as far as I know, he never actually learned to speak German).

A song for our time. You always look for the “others” to put yourself higher. Even if you find a woman who you then reject because of her origin. And you don't realize that you'll never be part of the upper class. Up-to-date, that means you're better than immigrants, but that might be enough to vote for Trump for the second time. But still, you're not really the defining element, it's still just money, and you're stupid for giving rich people the power they've had for so long.
