Like all truly inspired architects, Herzog & De Meuron is concerned with the phenomenology of architecture: what the user (visitor) actually experiences in moving through space(s). Architect may seem abstract to some people, but in fact it is an engagement of the senses in a serial progression through a building (including the approach).
