He was a pure genius. Too bad he only made six movies. He died broke. One journalist wrote in 1982 : "we cry dead Tati. We should have helped him alive". Unfortunately despite My Uncle, les vacances de M. Hulot and Jour de fête success, his memory is fading in France. Glad he still has fans in the UK.

I am undeniably a francophile, have lived and worked for over 25 years in Brittany. I am now happily retired. I was taken to the cinema in Cheam(in the late 1950's) as a small child by my father to see Monsieur Hulo's Holiday which gave me a lasting impression. Jacques Tati was an absolute genious and an inspiration to many.

We left the EU because we are fundamentally different. We just don’t do things the way foreigners do them.. Even Jacques Tati, a foreigner, a Frenchman even, possibly even some might say a Russian, could see this quite clearly and with great prescience. When future generations look back on Brexit with dumbfounded amazement at the short-sightedness and insularity of the English in 2016, we can show them this video and they will understand how different we were in those Medieval days (as they will then seem).
