I love strawberries but have never felt comfortable devoting a large permeant space for them. In this video I go over how to plant bare-root strawberries and setup a GreenStalk vertical garden! By growing them vertically I am able to fit 30 plants into just a few square feet of space which is hard to beat!

Total Greenstalk fan, I’ve been growing in them for the last 4 years. I would also suggest for anyone who is not as strong as Jacques, to start with you base tier then place an empty tier and fill with soil and plants. Then repeat. It can definitely take longer, but those tiers can be quite heavy for some of us weaklings. 😂

Be careful to not overfill the soil in the middle! I realized in the fall that the lower levels of my GreenStalk didn't seem to get nearly enough water. When I took it apart to figure out why, I realized that because I had soil filled all the way up, it ended up blocking the holes in the watering discs and 3 of my layers just got zero water for a month or so. I'm now making sure to leave a little well in the middle.

It took me around 3 days to have my strawberry towers all set up. I've got 4 towers with 90 slots in total and had to do a ton of drilling because the drainage holes just weren't adequate. I'm starting mine from seed though because I wanted to import some interesting varieties (I've got black strawberries, white strawberries, a hardy everybearing and a giant variety that I imported from China). Super excited! 🎉

Wow that sounds awesome! I haven't messed around with starting them from seed yet, I decided to just go with known varieties that we like and do well here. But later on experimenting with different ones sounds like fun

@@jacquesinthegarden I am especially interested in the giant ones because strawberry seeds are usually quite tiny. The giant strawberry seeds were around the size of an apple seed and the instructions were to store them in the refrigerator for a few days before planting. I'm honestly not sure about how they'll do because I'm currently living in Vietnam, where it's always hot all year round, but I've used ChatGPT, as an experiment, for planning my entire garden this season and it seems to think I'll be doing just fine. I'll tag you on Instagram when they do eventually pop up.

How did you keep the roots damp in the vermiculite. Do you moisten the vermiculite a lot? I just got the same bare root variety as you have there and I can't plant them right away. How do I prepare the vermiculite? Did you separate the roots prior to putting them in the vermiculite? Sorry for so many questions. I do enjoy your videos. Thank you for doing them.

So glad KZbin decided I needed this video in my feed! My bare root strawberries arrived yesterday (zone 7b), so I went ahead and filled my greenstalk with Happy Frog from Fox Farms, and today I’ll be planting! I’m using my greenstalk for food production this year, and have high hopes of strawberries, beans, cucumbers, carrots and beets in the same tower! I’ve been advised to put strawberries on the top tier. I have to keep my “garden” on my deck as we have an intense deer population! I still have to protect from raccoons and squirrels! It’s a battle I’m willing to fight!

Just planted my greenstalk yesterday with strawberries. Planted other stuff last year, so already set up and didn't want to take it apart. Refreshed the soil and plants the bare-root berries - it was a pain trying to get the roots in the way I wanted to with it already set up, but it worked in the end. Hoping for a nice harvest of my everbearing strawberries up on the patio. I also turn my greenstalk a little every day or two.

I live in zone 5b. Usually strawberries have to be covered with frost blankets to keep them from dieing over winter. With the tower and keeping them elevated like this they would be even more susceptible to freezing. How do you suggest to over winter strawberries if using a tower like this? Just wheel them into a garage for the winter? What about for those who don't have a garage? Thank you.
@jacquesinthegarden
@jacquesinthegarden Жыл бұрын
In colder zones this would be quite the challenge without a protected space. They sell a frost blanket that you can throw over the whole thing but that would only add a few degrees and not save you in deep winter. Alternatively, a labor intensive move would be to dig them out and plant them all into something else that is easier to protect or restart every year. Unfortunately I am not as well versed for zone 5!
@Grateful_Grannie
@Grateful_Grannie 10 ай бұрын
Realistically, we have to accept and work with the limitations of our zones. Anything in a container would likely need to have the variety zone tolerance dialed back by at least 2 zones. I am container gardening in zone 5b, but will look for berries with zone 2 & 3 tolerance. If I did a Greenstalk for them, I would overwinter in larger mass planters I could heavily mulch. In ground strawberries do great in my zone, but aren’t an option for my living space. Space is limited, so Greenstalk may still be best option for me during growing season. Probably not the coasters, as garden theft has been an issue! The spinner though… definite YES! At least if they get stolen, the plants could still get even sun…

I planted strawberries in a greenstalk about this time last year with great success. I’m in zone 7b and they produced berries in to the fall. My tower is south facing and in full sun so in the Georgia heat I water daily and spin it. I also fertilize with fish emulsion fertilizer at least once a month and amend the soil with compost and espoma plant tone in the spring and fall. I’m about to purchase another tower for strawberries that I have growing in other containers. It takes a lot of plants to yield enough berries for a family of 3.

I can not live without my greenstalks!!!! Birthdays, anniversaries, or Christmas, my husband knows all I want are greenstalks (or canning supplies)😅 Question: I know you touched on it briefly, but is that particular soil greenstalk approved? Got a greenstalk last year. It has strawberries from last year. I just fertilize them 2x a year. Just cut all the dead lesves off a month or so ago and they have started growing again. May get another tower for more strawberries. 30 plants arent enough to get a decent harvest for a family. Also, the spinner is a must but the wheels for me are useless. When I try to push the tower even on concrete it sounds like the plastic wheels will break and I cant move it. The tower holds up in super high winds. We get winds up to 55 mph often and it holds up like a champ.

Has anyone tried these towers in Phoenix. I wonder if they are large enough to hold some moisture when it’s 115.

They would have to be watered daily, and you might want to drape them with some shadecloth when it gets really hot out.

You can mulch these as well and if you are in a warmer zone adding some vermiculite might help you retain moisture better

In Kevin’s previous video, he suggested to use the Leaf greenstalk for strawberries because strawberries typically have shallower root systems. I noticed you’re using an original with the deeper cells…can you explain why? The Leaf has more cells and therefore more planting locations.
@jacquesinthegarden

I opted for the 5 tier so that I could get away with watering less often as well as not having to fertilize as often. With the deeper soil pockets there is more capacity for water and nutrients allowing me a buffer for when I forget to water it.

those bare root strawberries look fantastic! mind sharing where you got them at? purchased some from Raintree that did not look very stellar(though every other berry i've bought from there has been great so could be a fluke)

I think that you should have used the 7 tier Greenstalk for strawberries. That's what I use it for. (Mostly).

I opted for the 5 tier to make watering and long term care easier as the roots grow in but it's cool to know the 7 tier works well also!

I choose a plant tag as a reference point and rotate the whole tower every few days whenever I remember, that reference tag helps me remember where I rotated to last.

Possibly dumb question: I've never had strawberries in containers, but growing up we had a strawberry bed that came back every year. I am in Canada (Zone 5b). Would I be replanting the strawberries every year? Could I just wheel the whole thing into my garden shed and would that maybe keep my plants alive over winter?
@jacquesinthegarden
@jacquesinthegarden Жыл бұрын
I can't speak for sure on the survivability in the shed but even in containers these will remain perennial and will continue to grow and send runners out year after year. You could try to protect them indoors but with the design of the greenstalk I imagine you don't have much buffer against the colder temps.

Great demonstration! I’ll probably be getting a GreenStalk this year, actually. If you wanted to grow strawberries from seed, would you directly sow them into the GreenStalk, or would you grow them in seed starting trays first and then transplant?
@jacquesinthegarden
@jacquesinthegarden Жыл бұрын
You would still want to transplant them, they grow pretty slowly at the start and it would be a challenge to germinate and baby them in the greenstalk versus all in one tray of seedlings.
