Chemist here. The scoville is a fun unit of measure. You take a large batch of 5:1 water:sugar. The scoville is the number of grams of this sugar to eliminate the spicy taste of 1g of blended (seeds, stems, veins and all) pepper. Eg. Bell pepper you only need at most 1g of the sugar water to eliminate the taste. A Fresno is around 3000-5000 scoville, or about 1g of blended pepper would need almost 3-5L of the sugar water so you no longer feel the spice. In practicality then we start to use milligrams of peppers so we only have to drink a few mL of sugar/water. This is one of the few scientific tests you NEED a panel of expert individuals to run the test, as there's no other real way to gauge it. So you can imagine how annoying it must be to test the REALLY spicy fuckers. Also they have to live very minimally spice lifestyles as to not become immune to the spice, and reduce their judgment. Cheers! 🌶️

Here in Germany, we are far away from starting tomatoes. Spinach, Broad Beans, Peas, Salad Greens, Parsley etc., that's where we are right now. Although it's way too warm this year. Tomatoes grow too big inside until you can plant them outside. Or put them outside too early and then a late frost hits them hard. Wait a couple of weeks, they will catch up in no time in the summer. Happy gardening wherever you are.

Pepper suggestions - Ají Dulce - all the flavor of a habañero but no heat. They are slow to get going by comparison to other peppers, but make up for it later. They are quite ornamental as well. Available from Southern Exposure seed exchange. Corbaçi - a Turkish sweet cayenne - insanely productive for me. They start out yellow, but I always let them get red ripe. One of the earliest I raise. Ajvarski - said to be from Macedonia and used there for making a condiment known as ajvar. So far that is my favorite sweet pepper for sweet and complex flavor. Let them get red ripe and put them in your shopska salata. (a version of which I eat almost everyday in season) You may well stand up and sing doo dah! Both corbaçi and ajvarski I get from Baker Creek Seeds. Corbaçi I think may be available elsewhere as well. I am living in Central Virginia at this time, but I grew up in Northern New Mexico, so I always raise New Mexico green chile - Big Jim, Joe E. Parker, Sandía Select, and Chimayó. Big Jim and Joe e. Parker can be milder here than in New Mexico, especially when they mature in cooler, damper all weather. Sandīa is a good bit hotter, and tends to maintain that heat. I do the traditional thing and roast them when they are green - that's about the only thing I use my charcoal grill for. What I am not going to eat right away, I put in labeled bags in the freezer with no further preparation. They peel very easily when they are still mostly frozen. I would think that would work well for preserving sweet peppers as well. To get the desired heat, I mix the Big Jim/Joe E. Parker with the Sandía as needed. The Chimayó chiles are mostly for drying red ripe for use in red sauces. I get those seeds from Sandía Seeds.

Hello from Ukraine! Lesya pepper is a variety originating from our country and it shouldn't have any spiciness to it. It is really very, very sweet, probably not the sweetest one in the world, but pretty much close to it :) Probably you had the seeds that were cross-pollinated with some spicy variety. If you like sweet peppers you should definitely search for real Lesya, you won't regret it!

I know you said don't enjoy too many hot peppers, but grow ferment and make hot sauce it's fun. Especially trying to mix flavors with fruits. Game changing. Regardless, great video

I always have a few in the habanero range and maybe 1 super hot like ghost pepper. I. Actually made some hot sauce and accidentally mislabeled the one with ghost peppers then served it to friends. It was an interesting experience haha, but everyone really enjoyed it and we went in for more!

What are your favorite ways to use the jalapeños? And please share how you make a fermented hot sauce! I’d love to give it a try.

Last year I smoked and dried my jalapenos to use in Mexican cooking like pozole, beans, salsa and to just flavor broth. Was really awesome to have and I want more this time

Interesting you only have a couple different colours. I grow a lot of non-red tomatoes as I grow in a community garden - it drastically reduces theft if no one can tell they are ripe. It does make for some weird looking canned tomatoes through the winter though 😂😂. Doing 11 tomatoes this year. Usually I buy my plants, but this year I’m starting from seed!

Do you have a video on your hot pepper sauce if not we would love to see that

Thank you for sharing all your choices with us :) I really want to try the candy cane pepper. Last year I grew a sweet chocolate pepper. The reason i like it so much was it tasted like a red pepper but i didnt have to wait for it to go through all the color changes. It was also an early riper for me which is great since i have a short growing season. Cant wait to see you trying all those new tomatoe varieties and seeing your feed back on them. Your pepper and tomaroes selection is always great! Happy growing!

If you intend to save seeds from your peppers, pay attention to the species of each variety and keep members of the same species separate. Capsicum annum includes the large, milder varieties, like bell, shishito, cubanelle, and poblano. Capsicum baccatum includes all of the Aji varieties, like sugar rush and lemon drop. Capsicum chinense includes the wrinkly, hotter peppers, all the way to the superhots like Carolina Reaper and Trinidad Scorpion. You can plant members of different species in the same area, but the different planting areas should be about 50 ft / 15 m apart if you don't want them to cross breed.

I took a microbiology course and learned about a certain edible carnivorous mushroom species that encapsulates and consumes nematodes, I forget what the species was but do remember I found spores for sale. Maybe something to look into!

I just started a bunch of peppers this week. You reminded me that I forgot to start Shishito peppers! I’m interested in growing plants for teas, lately. So far I’m enjoying Calendula, Marigold and Lemongrass tea. I plan on growing Hyssop and Camomile this year. Any suggestions?

Do you grow dwarf tomatoes these days? I remember seeing them in your previous videos and I'm curious why or why not. Thanks!
@jacquesinthegarden10 ай бұрын
I probably will grow some for the summer container selection. Now I don't have as much container area so I haven't started up new seeds yet. To me they are still the ultimate container type!

@@jacquesinthegarden Thanks Jacques! I grew 5 different dwarf tomatoes last year in 10 gallon grow bags and they did pretty well here in Southwest Montana. Our growing season is short and it seems the smaller plants matured a bit more quickly. I just ordered four new vanities this week and am looking forward to getting back in the garden. Really appreciate all your content and advice!
