In this video we explain how to care for your Jade Bonsai tree, also known as the Portulacaria or Crassula. Watering, pruning, fertilizing - all these topics are discussed. Keeping a Jade Bonsai alive is not a difficult task, but there are a few things you should be aware of. For more information, also check:
www.bonsaiempire.com/tree-spe...
Bonsai trees are planted in small pots with minimal space for water and nutrient reserves. That means you need to water and fertilize your tree regularly. Make sure your Bonsai gets plenty of light, water, and fertilize when needed and your tree is sure to thrive!
If you are not entirely sure about your tree species, you can use this guide to ID your Bonsai:
www.bonsaiempire.com/tree-spe...
If you want to learn more about Bonsai, consider enrolling in one of our Online Bonsai Courses. For the curriculums and free lectures, go to:

This video was filmed in the Japanese garden of Clingendael. We also like to thank Deshima Bonsai.

Really admire the movement in the trunk and branches of these jades. It’s not commonly seen because it can be challenging to wire jades so most people only do clip-and-grow.

the moment is interesting, but not natural or justifiable. It devalues the tree greatly, but makes it more marketable towards garden centres who don't care about correct, but interesting instead. There is no way a tree could grow this wavy in nature so it spoils it

My afra trunk bark looks alot more brown then what I see in the video. Is that just lighting or is it a different variety?
@acheronexile
@acheronexile Жыл бұрын
Edible portulacaria afra can withstand sub freezing temperatures, unlike crassula which is mildly poisonous. If you start losing leaves, the plant has likely been overwatered. Withholding water from the plant until its leaves gain a leathery texture can be an excellent way to prevent most root rot problems.

I have a couple of small (~4inches) Jade Plants that used to be one plant, but I split it in two. I got it specifically because I thought it would be a manageable plan to start my bonsai journey with. The plant has been easy to care for, and I've successfully gotten it to ramify several times, so each plant is topped by a healthy, round-ish crown of leaves. The only problem I'm having is that the trunks of both plants are so thin. How can I go about encouraging the plant to grow a thicker trunk?
@bonsaiempire
@bonsaiempire 5 ай бұрын
Ah nice - you need strong growth for the trunk to thicken. We have a video on trunk thickening here on youtube, I think by Walter Pall!

Yes you can repot without upsizing the pot - you do need to prune back the roots and refresh the soil every 2-3 years for the Jade.

Hi Nikki! You have to check the care guidelines for Jade, and compare those to what you have been doing. Some mistakes might be; not enough light, too much water, not enough water.

I don’t understand why he is calling these Portulacaria plants - Jade. Jade plants and Portulacaria look and act kind of the same but are different species. Those plants are not Jade. Jade has a much large leaf and at that stage would have a thicker trunk.

i guess its a choise for each and everyone how you want your tree looking like and all in the end, but,, , when a commercial center like you guys recommend fertilizer for jades, its more because you sell fertilizer than the fact that you really think that EVERY jade tree needs fertilizer , like the video gives the impression of. or ?
@bonsaiempire

Hi Quad Derrick, we don't sell fertilizer - but even if we would, I absolutely think the Jade needs fertilizer in its growing season.
@QuadDerrick
@QuadDerrick 3 жыл бұрын
@@bonsaiempire You deleted my comment ? truth hurts business ? you DO sell fertilizer. This video here is directed very much at selling bonsai starter kits , that DO contain fertilizer so you DO very much sell fertilizer. Please do not lie just cause you want money. Jades been growing for thousands of years without fertilizer just fine.
@bonsaiempire
@bonsaiempire 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Quad. Jades, planted in small pots and with little nutrients available to them, need fertilizer - just as they need to be repotted every 2 to 3 years. Needless to say, if you don't agree with our experiences and guidelines that is fine with me and you should do whatever you please with your jades :-)

I bet you have access to better trees, why don't you show them in your videos instead?

Hi Diego, thanks for your reply! I see your point, of course. The reality is that many people start out with exactly these trees, which often die because they are not cared for properly. And this hurts as these beginners often decide bonsai is not for them! This is why we show these beginner trees and explain how to take care of them well. The most straightforward advice is; water it well, place it correctly and if the soil is no good, repot in the next early spring. Showing masterpieces to beginners is of little use in my opinion - but our goal is to help beginners appreciate the art of bonsai and progress towards making your own trees. Regarding the Jade, we have some info and more mature trees on our website here: www.bonsaiempire.com/tree-species/jade-tree
