Jade's 10 Worst Robot Master Weapons

Previously I talked about ten of the best robot master games in the series. Now, I'd like to think I'm pretty leniant with the weapons. I actually think the Top Spin and the Power Stone, two oft-maligned weapons, are more useful than most people give them credit. Still, there are a few that are much harder to defend. Even though I can't say I completely hate many of the weapons in this list, they do represent the ones that have major flaws to them, that greatly impede their usability in comparason to other weapons available.
EDIT: Note that I did this video before the announcement of MM10. After playing it, Sheepman's Thunder Wool should UNDOUBTEDLY be on this list, as it is very similar to the Hyper Bomb; powerful, but extremely unwieldly; to the point that even the bosses weak against it are perhaps easier to just use the buster.

I'm surprised Time Stopper isn't on this list. I'd have put that on this instead of Air Shooter or Atomic Fire. Also, if this list was done after MM10 was release I'd definitely put either Thunder Wool or Commando Bomb on here.

@SpiralPegasus No, I was talking about the normal rings, here's the hint: After you shoot the boomerang, there's a little delay time before the ring starting to return to you, and THAT is the time where it can do multiple hits. If you keep the distance before shoot, it can hit THREE times: once when contact, once when stops, and once when start to return. Plus the ring is pretty powerful in most of the time, just like EVERY weapon in Megaman 4.

10: Kind of agree here, the Hyper Bomb in the original sucked. But in Powered Up it was awesome, personally. 9: Meh. Not really a weapon I like to use regularly, but not a weapon I can call terrible. 8: FUCK THIS WEAPON, FUCK THAT STAGE, FUCK THAT BOSS, FUCK EVERYTHING RELATED TO HEAT MAN! 7: Agree. It's downright useless. 6: I don't qualify this as a weapon. I want to forget this ever existed. 5: I'm sorry, but I cannot see how is the Charge Kick worse than the Atomic Fire or the Sakugarne. It's actually pretty good if you know how to use it. I'd switch it with the Power Stone. 4: Meh. I think this weapon is semi useful at places, but it should have more ammo and the ability to throw it. 3: Pretty good weapon, but kinda lacks in ammo. 2: I kind of agree here, because it is situational, but at least it has a lot of ammo. 1: Yup, I agree here. This weapon is really unwieldy. And a shame, since the weapons from Powered Up were really good(they even made the Super Arm likeable).

I have to disagree about Charge Kick. It makes you completely invincible when you slide, this is invaluable in dodging attacks and taking out ground based enemies. It's a great weapon when used properly.

@TheShorty312 My thoughts exactly. The Top Spin is actually very powerful; it just has very short range (and some enemies are immune to it). But most don't seem to give it enough of a chance to realize that. The Power Stone has its merits as well.

@valorjoz I've found the Skull Barrier useful on at least a couple of occasions; most notably the falling rocks portion of Drillman's stage. The Plant Barrier is worse in that it functions exactly the same as the Skull Barrier, but it uses about twice as much weapon energy.

I am just happy you didn't put Water Wave on your list, that is a very fun useful weapon if you know it cancels out most if not all ranged attacks coming in your direction.

@stopactionagidius I have to agree, especially after playing Wily's Dream Space; the Charge Kick's invincibility frames really came in handy on several occasions. If I could do this list again, I would likely replace it with MM10's Thunder Wool.

@SpiralPegasus MM10. Thunder Wool. It's a cloud that does little damage, can't control it, dissipates if it hits an enemy or obstacle. If it doesn't manage to hit an enemy or obstacle, then it does a lot of damage when lightning comes out of it. It's also expensive (4 units per use = total of 7 uses).

I like that you didn't put Top Spin on this list - that weapon is actually a pretty decent close-range weapon when you learn to use it right. It one-shots surprisingly many enemies, like for example the walking eyes, the skydivers, the monkeys, the turtles, and even the rock golems.

@zuschzero That sounds like Rockman 4 Minus Infinity's Ring Boomerang. MM4's Ring can't hit more than two times, it doesn't keep hitting your enemy and you can only have one on screen at a time. Are yu sure you didn't make a mistake?

@Fillistar Actually, I think the Bubble Lead has its uses elsewhere, such as against ground hugging enemies like the Springer. Also it helps pinpoint the illusionary floors in Wily stage 4.

I have to disagree with charge kick. I lets you to be invisible to kill enemies. I think Megaman 5 weapons are okay. Gyro attack, gravity hold, napalm bomb, crystal eye, and charge kick were pretty good for me. The other 3 in the game sucked.

I may yet do a X Series version. I'd have to think more about my favorite/least favorite weapons from that series. Artwork of X with the weapons are harder to come by as well.

@AJF786 Which ones? I recall no enemy that only Bubble Lead could beat. And also yes, Napalm Bomb explodes on contact but it's range is poor and the explosion (which is the "good part", like in Crash Bomb) is very hard to calculate so that it actually does decent damage. You're better just using the normal buster...

True enough; I find these videos very interesting; I have yet to play 9 or 10, and I haven't played the GB ones. But I am planning on making a fan game of sorts and thus the pros and cons of certain weapons is very helpful to me. Do you suppose you can do the weapons of the X series as well?

@SpiralPegasus The ring boomerang never disappear if it hit something, it can do multiple hits if you aim it correctly and you can do some pretty trick with that. So it's very far from being a bad weapon.

@MrWeirdGuy The Skull Barrier works identical to the Plant Barrier, but it uses a lot less weapon energy. The Star Crash would be about the same, in function and energy usage, but at least it can be fired.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the purpose of Spark Shock is to freeze your enemies so as to avoid them, rather than kill them. While this doesn't really make it any less useless as a weapon per se, if used with this purpose in mind it does make it slightly more viable in certain situations, I suppose....

well, I agree, but the oil slider is quite hard to control. In fact I learned to use this more propperly while playing as oilman (double jump, water flotabiity control...). By the way despite being the hardest character to play the game, he is the best against dr wily and the water thing

@galvatronic2 the oil slider is really VERY useful if you know how to use it.its a guard breaker.i once knocked the sheild RIGHT off a sniper joe by ramming into it.and i also made a mettool and a cactuspi flip over by doing the same thing.

Yamato spear is far superior than Needle cannon: twice as powerful and going through on all types of shields.

@SpiralPegasus Bubble Lead can destroy otherwise invincible enemies (though Quick Boomerang works too). Napalm Bomb explodes on contact, making much more useful than the original Hyper Bomb.

He did not put the thunder Wool because the video predates Megaman 10, but assured that he would add it because it is similar to the Hyper Bomb: powerful but extremely unwieldy.

Power stone can hit a lot of flying enemies that plague MM5 and water wave is a great weapon for grounded enemies and can destroy most projectiles

@killerb255 That's certainly understandable; since it's pretty much useless unless there are blocks on hand to throw (and they don't respawn if you die). But I thought I'd give it a pass since it's required to get the Magnet Beam, which is manditory to get through one part of the game and makes so many other sections MUCH easier (and it's awesome in Power Battle/Fighters).

That is true, but avoiding them is often unavoidable anyway, as most enemies are difficult to just jump over and you still get hurt if you touch them while they're stunned. Outside of the bosses that are weak to it, the only time I find myself using it is to get past Bikky (the big jumping guy); freezing him in midair and slide under him. As noted though, it's a LOT more useful in MM3GB, since you can switch weapons while the enemy is stunned.

The Atomic Fire was upgraded in hacks like Rockman no Constancy and Mega Man Ultra which decreased the amount of weapon energy of a fully charged shot by a whole lot.

I can see why people don't like the Power Stone; it is a little unwieldy. But I do like it when I want to kill stuff above me and I want to save Gyro Attack energy (a great part is in Wily's fortress 2 where there are Power Musclers trying to camp me on the ladders. I thought the Seach Snake was okay. Not fantastic, but I felt it had its uses.

@valorjoz skull barrier is pretty dang awesome, I can block almost any projectile, kill pesky flying bots and keep you safe at drill man's stage where the rocks fall. I know shield type weapons have always been belittled but among all the shield types skull barrier is number one in terms of actually usability

No, the needle cannon has 112 shots while Yamato spear has 28 shots. However, Jade forgot to mention that the Yamato spear can pierce shields similar to the laser trident

Plant Barrier - its uses a lot of energy yes, but it's the best offensive shield out of all the shield weapons in the series Power Stone - It misses a lot, however, it actually is a fun way to use accuracy and timing. I've used it a couple of times during speed runs. Top Spin - it is the crappiest weapon, agreed, but it does make a good boss entrance touch up. Charge Kick - I find it useful, especially in stone man's stage and Dr. Wily's first stage.

While you have done this three years ago, I still come to give my opinion. 10- HB: I have no defense for this one. I barely use it. 9- AS: Use this to kill Rider Joes, and it's the only actual weapon needed in Quickman's Stage. 8- AF: I barely use it, but consider it a really good one. Woodman. 7- SS: Most of the time I try to avoid fighting to make a good time. This weapon is actually great. Do not expect it to do any damage to anyone except Magnet though.

BTW, Quint's weapon DOES have a name. It's called the Sakugarne, which translates to "Jackhammer" proving that it's NOT a pogo stick! I do agree with you that it's pretty damn useless. If you could bounce on spikes and enemies WITHOUT getting hurt, that would be awesome! Another thing that makes this weapon crappy is the timing. If you were to get it DIRECTLY after defeating the first 4 Robot Masters, there would be time to apply it, but since it isn't recieved until just before the end... yeah.

@tedkissel Top spin isn't what you'd call a kick ass weapon, but once you mastered it you can use it to rush through a level without getting harmed. It is not a great weapon due to it's short range and that goddamn random energy consumption and also it's hard not to get hit, but it's not THAT bad. A terrible weapon is the one that either doesn't harm, is impossible to aim or hit with, that consumes too much, that has a low fire rate.... or a combination of these factors.

Spark Shot was definitely a good call. It was definitely stupid to not allow a weapons switch but could have proved interesting if it could have been used to turn enemies into temporary platforms. Magnet Missiles would have been a good weapon if it used less energy per shot. The Gemini Laser was a disappointment. Here I'm thinking it would cut through enemies like butter but it would just get absorbed and it took 2 units of energy for that "privilege". Gutsman technique was crappy too.

Um...wrong on the PB revision of Plant Barrier. The thing is stronger than the Water Shield in those games (absorbs quite a bit of damage though its offset by the fact the bosses themselves do more - minions do the same) and whacks the fuck out of anything you hit it with; strikes 8 times ignoring invincibility frames.

Has anyone ever thought that we are the ones who are bad at using weapons. I can think of at least 20 or more robot masters who use there weapon better Bomb man, guts man, bubble man, heat man, flash man, spark man, skull man, stone man, napalm man, charge man, star man, Blizzard man, yamato man, centaur man, freeze man, Slash man, spring man, turbo man, aqua man, concrete man, plug man, magma man, sheep man, and pump man.

I can agree with pretty much all of these, although I've found the Yamato Spear's shield-penetrating abilities to be useful on occasion. Charge Kick, though, shouldn't really be on the list. Those invincibility frames are incredibly useful, not to mention the interesting effect the final Dark Man's attack has on it... Mega Man basically becomes a bed of spikes for Dark Man to jump in. Most enemies will end up dying from those 2-3 damage points it deals, and you can skip most of the large ones.

Yamato Spear just needs to be used effectively-if you spam it like fuck of course you're going to run out. You need very little energy if you're using it right. Of course, only that hard-ass dragon in the Wily Castle and those annoying shield guys are weak against it so you shouldn't be using it much anyways...

You missed Power Stone and Top Spin. You can't even hit anyone with the very limited shots you get from Power Stone, and Top Spin is a joke, made worse by the fact that one spin can drain the entire weapon energy bar if you are not careful. Besides those two, good list!

You know what, Bubble lead should be on this list. I mean, you only use it on HeatMan and the very last version of Dr. Wiley. Its one of those weapons that where only made to look cool, but only to kill a stage boss...like Launch Octopus

I would certainly say that Charge Kick is actually underrated, it's not bad if you know how to use it. The others are pretty much all absolutely terrible. Kinda surprised to not see Skull Barrier on here too, it's pretty damn bad as well. It does seem unfortunately that for every awesome weapon or two we get, there's probably at least a couple that blow.

Nate Schons I actually love power stone. It's crap in open areas, but use it in a room against enemies that are camping in inconvenient places, and you can take out a couple nuisances around the corner with minimal energy expenditure without even going near them. I never use it against bosses, though.
