Bass is not at all OP. Neither Mega Man or Bass is better than each other since Mega Man has a much easier time dealing with enemies and bosses, has vastly superior items, but Bass is better suited to the platforming.

@@lakentrkfudge honestly they're kinda equal overall. For combat, megaman has the charge shot and can move while shooting. bass has aimable rapid fire. Levels have areas that one can get to that the other can't due to double jump/slide. For troublesome platforming, megaman has beat, bass has treble adapter, etc.

The levels are designed for Mega Man. They play just like any other Mega Man game. People just usually choose Bass first, and since he breaks the game in half with his move set, newbies don't realize how precise classic Mega Man platforming actually is.

@@superchiptunetv2291 Or it's just a throwback to Mega Man 1, where in order to complete the Wily Stages, you need a weapon NO ONE ever tells you about unless you go and read the manual, which isn't even there in some collections. Mega Man & Bass, however, does not use a secret weapon, so there's a good chance you'll be familiar with it at the point it's needed.

I think a better way to put it is that Bass is far superior to megaman in general, but there are many situations that are extremely difficult with bass and easy with megaman, especially once you have ice wall and can duplicate the jump height, his shots go through walls and bass shots cant which is more important than most realize and the charge shot especially, boss invincibility frames and bass having a machinegun pea shooter makes that just the most obvious example but it’s pervasive in the levels too I always play as bass still but they definitely did make megaman useful

There's a hack that lets you swap characters on the fly. It vastly improves the overall game, as you can mainly tackle the levels with Bass (for whom the stages feel designed for) and the bosses with Mega (for whom the bosses feel designed for), etc.

The levels are somewhat interesting as well, taking advantage of the Wonderswans tate-mode for vertical stages. The bosses can be somewhat annoying though, having weakspots that only a couple of pixels big in some cases. But yeah, decent game, and kind of a good plot too!

I love this game to pieces. I had the GBA version when it came out, and I beat the SNES version when I was in high school. I still listen to the soundtrack regularly. I have played all of the main series and this title is my favorite. It just stands out for me. I think the game was designed around playing as Bass. I think playing as Megaman should be viewed as a hard mode.

This is one of my favorite game in the series. MegaMan wasn't known to be an easy game. Would say that MegaMan 1-6, 9-10 is more difficult easily. So I'm not sure how this can be considered bad if those are good.

While yes, most of the bosses in this game are disasters, Ground Man is an absolutely excellent robot master. His pattern (save for the Spread Drill attack, which can feel inconsistent at times) is top-notch, his attacks are clearly telegraphed, his fight is very rewarding to learn, and the Pirate Bomb is an absolute joy to use against him, should you choose to go with his weakness. Attaching a bomb to him and having him try to burrow underground, only to get launched out by an explosion is just the cherry on top.

I loved this game back in the day. I chose to play as Bass from the get go and never even looked at Megaman, I found the level of difficulty rewarding, but I haven't played a lot of Megaman games, so mine is kind of an outsider perspective.

This whole game is like that, the solutions aren't obvious, it's more like a punishing puzzle platformer.. That instant kill fire? Ice pillar is just tall enough and lasts long enough to stand on to avoid it, I don't know of anyone who figured that out though, everyone just brute forces it and rams into the cannons.

@@JetWolfEX they gave you an extra life exactly so it wouldn't be punishing. They use the ballons later in the stage. And guess what, antdude didn't show footage of them. You know why he didn't? Because he learned how balloons work because the game **forced him to learn** without taking lives away from him. It may be bad design to have a life + death trap setup, but it's stupid to ignore why it was done and how it helped you. It makes you look oblivious. Both antdude and you two are doing it.

Giving an extra life just because they knew it was too difficult is bad level design. Instead of finding a way for the player to get it right on the first try if they notice what to do, they give you an extra life because they know you're probably gonna get killed first time around, and didn't bother trying to make that part actually decently designed

I actually just replayed this for the first time in like 8 years, last week, so the timing of this review was pretty cool! That said, I really enjoy this game and many of the things you found frustrating I didn't, whether that's because I'm just used to it/remember them, or expect memorization bullshit in Megaman games. Idk man, I played this waaay back when I first found out about emulation and I remember liking it a lot. I just started it again on my Pi, but given, I’m into Bass and that’s how I played it back then and now I’m more of an X fan, and Bass plays much more like X than MM does. I understand your points of contention, but I just don’t remember having these same problems back then. Maybe I’ll see it this time thru Also, I never really played many of the original MM games, I started with MMX, then went on to only play MM7, 8 and 11 in the OG series. Like I said, I’m much more of an X fan. Played X1-X4 and Zero. Id say still give it a try if you like the X series more, and go with Bass instead.

Yeah, this video of his was just awful. Then again, the only videos of his that I find moderately tolerable are his Kirby videos. He basically just slams anything that isn't piss easy. I found Mega Man & Bass incredibly well designed, though I can't defend the flying tank boss lol.

Interesting video, however I do have to say that a lot of your complaints about MM&B can be directly applied to several numbered NES entries as well. With the exception of the first two games, the boss weaknesses are often really hard to guess, and memorization as well as cheap deaths are almost part of the experience. As an example for this comparison, I will take Mega Man 3. Since I thought checking the weaknesses in the database of the legacy collection or on the wiki was cheap, it took me forever just to finish the first two levels. I had to constantly try out different robot masters to see if they could be weak against my stuff only to die to some petty trap halfway through and get a game over. And that's not even talking about the Doc Robot levels, where you have no checkpoints for the first part boss included, meaning you have to do the entire level again if you die against the boss, and the bosses are basically beefed up versions of the eight MM2 robot masters. It. is. tedious beating all of them. Then there's the point of cheap traps and hard sections. I think the balloon section looks alright, specially compared to the rush jet/marine sections of the Doc Robot stages where you get one shot to do it, since your meter will be too low to attempt it again after respawning and the upgrades won't respawn with you, basically rendering your lives after dying at this part useless as you have to do the entire level from scratch. Compared to that bullsh*t the balloons look rather fine, especially since you won't lose much progress since they're at the beginning. Basically, MM&B is hard, yes. I am not here to deny that. I will say, however, that so are the main line games. You will die a lot and have lots, and lots, and lots of game over screens if you play without a walkthrough. But as you repeat these levels, you become increasingly better at them and start understanding the level design more to the point that parts you found to be hard will appear as easy at the end of a playthrough of any Mega Man game. I think passing off MM&B just because of its difficulty isn't really justified at all if you consider that exact point to be what many like about the series.

I think a lot of the problem is that people grew up with the older mega man games. They have nostalgia for the games and played them when they were younger and more patient. They no longer notice the cheap traps, strange design flaws, and unfair level design, because they've known the tricks to get around it their whole lives. But they dont think about it that way, so when they see the same problems in a game they're not familiar with they don't compare them.

Burnerman looks hot(HA!) to me too but boi fighting him is way different story, also I like Magicman and Groundman better in term of design but Burnerman is still good looking. About difficulty, yeah I feel you. It's not very good by any mean but for me it's still a damn fine game, I'd complain more about X6 or GOD FORBID X7 than this game.

@@YoungAvJoe I can definitely agree with that, it isn't my favorite out of the classic Mega Man games (that would be MM8 for me), but I feel like it has some really fun designs for all of the bosses, although Cold man is slightly too bland for me. Also I don't know why, but for Mega Man and Bass I have always thought that it would have been a cool idea if they made it for GameCube at the time and have it be 3D since there was pretty much no classic Mega Man on the system that I know of

I guess I should provide context for my experience with the series. I've played 2,7,8,9,10,11,X1 and X4 and outside of the series, some other hardcore platformers I've played are: super meat boy, celeste and dead cells. As for games in a similar vein: azure striker gunvolt 1+2 and mighty gunvolt burst. So I guess I'm pretty experienced.

I guess my familiarity with this game makes me biased, but damn do I love it. It was my very first Megaman game and I honestly don't think I would have turned into such a fan if this game wasn't brutally punishing. It had an incredible mystique for me precisely because it took me YEARS to beat it despite its short length. Talk about a lasting impression. P.S: the balloon bit in Tengu Man's stage becomes much easier once you realize you can simply walk off one balloon and land on the next.

Honestly, I was kind of underwhelmed when I played this game for the first time. The difficulty is high, but it's not like it's one of the hardest games ever made. I'd say the final level is the only one I would truly consider "bullshit", and while really hard, the game does present some pretty fun and dynamic levels and bosses. I mean, I'd say these bosses are more interesting than your standard "jump and shoot a thing" style bosses that the classic series was becoming oversaturated with before 7. I just thought this game was a fun challenge, and though Bass makes it easier, I usually run through it as Megaman now that I know how the game is. Your first 1-3 playthroughs will be nightmarish, yes, but once you get the hang of it and start playing a bit more patiently, I think the game gets a hell of a lot better. You don't see a lot of other games getting shit on for being hard the first time around, so I think this game deserves that same kind of chance.

Why would you want to play a game that you don't enjoy 3 times over? What do you gain from that?

@@bhull242 I played it recently, and it's not as bad as people make it out to be, if I'm being honest. Maybe I'm biased, since when I played the SNES version, I used the player switch patch (mostly to get all the CDs on one save file) and the Equip All Items patch that the Rockman 4 Minus Infinity guy made, but I managed to get through the game okay with enough practice. Although I'm not doing myself many favors since I also thought Mighty No. 9 was okay. I usually just stick to the tried and true method of practicing and recognizing patterns in order get through these kinds of games, and it tends to work out more often than not.

Got this on GBA my first year of college XD After seeing a preview in Tips & Tricks for the japanese version around 98/99ish, I was stoked to have it released here at all. Still one of my favorites (mm 8 graphics with mm7 sound effects, yes please) with my one gripe being how long the second king level is (several sections with no save point sucks when your old style gba battery light turns red, thank god for the sp), and how difficult some of the cds are to get (trying to fend off those jumping drill things that destroy the ground while rush digs suuuuucks). Definitely harder than some of the other entries, but with enough time and memorization it's easy enough to handle on later playthroughs. I could see how it could be a pain to slog through now though without the excitement from getting to play a game I thought I'd never be able to. Btw, a nice way to get past the flying boss that destroys the platforms with his fist is to use dynamo man's screen nuke weapon. It'll hold you in place in the air until a lower platform shows up that you can land on.

Megaman and Bass for the GBA was the first Megaman game I ever beat, I think a large part of that was the perception that Megaman was really hard (it is) but that I expected it to be more of a big endurance level kind of thing and M&B had small levels that eventually allowed me to get by.

Just a tip about the balloon section, it's probably a bad idea to jump from balloon to balloon. You can walk normally without needing to bother with that until the last balloon. Also, I'll stick with the Bass from the M&B series (yes, I'm including Challenger from the Future on the Wonder Swan). That one can double jump, MM10's Bass can't.
