As far as I remember, I was very disappointed with this episode. There hardly was any screen time for just Jadzia, and did she even talk to Benjamin or NEW Dax? The scenes with Benjamin and NEW Dax were fine, but what does it say about Dax that he didn't care the most about dying Jadzia? Imagine a scene with the two of them talking, etc, how much a host really means to them, if they don't want to save someone who would DIE otherwise. Also, was there any confrontation about this with Jadzia Dax afterwards, with this guy or Benjamin? So much left unexplored. The Behind the Scenes just indicate that the writers wanted this episode to show that most Trills are not symbiotically joined. Great. The other stuff would be much more interesting.

It’s been awhile since I watched this episode as well. But if I remember right there was some kind of dangerous space storm going on and they had to evacuate the station, leaving only a skeleton crew to look after ds9. Unfortunately because the storm caused understaffed security and disruptions to the technology, this group sneaked onto the station and held everyone hostage. The group sorta leader only had one demand, he wanted the Dax symbiont. So everyone on ds9 had only two choices at the time, ether give up Dax and let Jadzia die or refuse and have the whole crew be killed. If you look in the backgroundo of the video, you’ll see Klingons holding weapons while our main characters are unarmed. Fortunately our main characters found a way to get Dax back to Jadzia. The whole episode really helps you understand how symbionts and hosts work, it’s really interesting.

I just watched this episode. To expand on what LeahDaydreamer said, Quark had given the Klingons the station security access because he thought they were there to buy one of his things (He had made a deal with them beforehand and didn't know they were hired to help take Jadzia's symbiont). A plasma storm caused the station to be temporarily evacuated, so there was no one on the station left except for the main ops crew. So it was a combination of a skeleton crew during a storm+Quark fucking up by not realizing what their real purpose on the station was that allowed them to be temporarily successful. Also, when they board the station, they immediately put Odo in a sealed container so that he can't shapeshift or deal with them.

The symbiant is definitely a separate life form, they change their name to reflect the DUAL nature of their existence, their whole life is changed by the memories of all the other lives their symbiant joined with.
