Jaeger-LeCoultre Possibly the Most Important Watch Brand

Jaeger-LeCoultre might just be the most important watch brand that no one gives near enough credit to. The Watchmakers Watchmaker - movement maker for Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, Cartier & more. How is JLC not a household name and yet these other brands are?
Sure, the watch enthusiast community respects them a lot... But I think JLC deserves so much more! Here is the heritage & the problem with JLC.

My two cents, for whatever they're worth, is that JLC is probably doing exactly what they want to. Rolex makes millions of watches a year, JLC quietly produces a few thousands. They have a high price point, a reputation for being quality, and those who know care. JLC isn't looking to sell to rappers and get the masses to buy their watches. I think they're totally okay with a few investment bankers, english lords, and devoted collectors

I agree, there are dozens of brands also within fashion that intentionally choose to be slightly under the radar. By being subtle and not too ‘shouty’ about themselves a brand projects a quiet confidence. Wearers of such watches or garments want to reflect this and are saying ‘I appreciate quality but don’t need an observer to obviously recognise this’, certainly not by apparent cost. I also think it’s worth finding the advert for their dive watches and Polaris range which again are very sublime and simply aimed at people with refined tastes.

I happened to walk into a Patek Boutique out of curiosity to take a look at their lineup. I fully expected them not to give me the time of day. When the saleswoman saw my Reverso DuoFace, her face broke out in the biggest smile. As someone earlier said…”when you know, you know”. We talked for ages about JLC. Talk about an icebreaker!

JLC is by far my favorite watch Manufacturer. I’ve owned (and daily wear) my JLC Geophysic 1958 limited edition for almost 8 years now and it has proven to be a faithful daily companion. It’s more of a ‘if you know, you know’ piece and that’s EXACTLY what I love about this piece and JLC in general. Nothing wrong with big, thick, metal, chunky, blingy sports watches. But give me a highly refined, elegant, beautiful, robust, haute horology JLC any day!

JLC is my favorite watch brand! I think it's because they're SO good and yet, NOT hyped at all. That equation may not be great for business, but as a consumer... that's my jam! I want a watch that I know is amazing and has history, and quality but that isn't necessarily going to get recognized by everyone. My grandfather owned a JLC, my dad owns a JLC and I own a JLC, it runs in my family :)

JLC is actually one of my favorite high horology brands. I appreciate that their value is known only to those with some real understanding of watchmaking. I have a reverso and a master control calendar, and on the rare occasion that someone has recognized either watch, the subsequent conversation was worth having.

As a owner of the new polaris perpetual calender and master compressor extreme lab 2. I can honestly say for the amount of watch you get for the money, it is unbeatable in any major brand. I can only say this for myself but I think most JLC fans are movement geeks and is happy being in the background being a supporting actor. P.S I'm quite happy JLC stays under the radar, don't wanna get mugged.

I think you are correct that what they really need is for influencers on social media to take a liking to their brand. That would help them become more well known. I purchased a black dial Polaris Chronograph about six months ago. Right at the highest point of the watch bubble and I received a 20 percent discount. I was very surprised the AD said ok to my request. I’ve always wondered why that watch didn’t gain value on the secondary watch market the way Patek, AP, VC, Rolex, and even GP did. That steel sports model never moved up at all. On the flip side, they haven’t crashed either. All of the brands that rose quickly have come back to earth somewhat. Especially GP. In my mind, there are two great watchmakers that are very well kept secrets. JLC in Switzerland and the other is Glashutte Original in Germany. JLC seems to be living in the rather large shadow cast by the Holy Trinity and GO lives in the shadow cast by Lange. It will be interesting to see if JLC gains notoriety at some point.

I’m quite happy where they are. Otherwise we couldn’t buy them or afford them. My target this year or early next year is a Reverso. Longer term is a VC Patrimony. I like these classic brands being discrete. I won’t get mugged for one.

I have a MUT Moonphase and it’s absolutely stunning. I look at it more than I look at my Rolex and I don’t feel like a dickhead when I wear it. Part of the appeal for me is the connoisseur vibe. I thought Dr Strange might get the brand out there, but his MUT Perpetual was probably too dressy for the masses and I’m sure after the movie countless people googled it and thought “Jesus Christ, over £20k for a watch!?!”. I’m planning on a Reverso for my wife’s 40th birthday and hopefully more to follow.

BC is not the best face for the brand imho :/ He just isn’t quirky-intellectual enough for the role, I’m so sorry BC😅 Not many will agree but I’d rather see Lady Gaga (a really intelligent lady), Keanu Reeves…maybe even Billie Ellish - to introduce some young blood over to JLC…BC not a great choice for an ambassador. Also, no memorable campaign comes to mind overall. And Gringa is so right about that.

Just been looking at a JLC ultra thin moon , with a silver dial for a possible 50th birthday present to myself in a years time. Had to drive from Bristol to Stratford-Upon-Avon just to view.Truly lovely watch on my short list, along with the perpetual calendar ultra thin , that is possibly way out of my budget in stainless steel!!!! But i really do love the complication of that watch, just like the ultra thin moon. If I go for the ultra thin moon and not the perpetual calendar ultra thin, I could have money left over for a Polaris automatic no date in blue on a bracelet. Decisions….Decisions……🤔

My mum recently (finally) treated herself to a Reverso and it's one of the most beautiful watches I've ever seen She's stopped herself from getting it for a couple of years now but always spoke about it to me She loves it and is so happy with it. Her showing me the watch for the first time is one of my happiest recent memories 🤗 I adore the reverso! I think JLC are amazing, and I will add one to my collection one day. My next 3 goals (now I've started with my new addition, 1961 omega ) are oris, Tudor, Rolex. Then one day JLC Also just got done watching ghost writer again weird little link! I think of JLC’s Polaris, and I think, yes, but…. It’s as if they are so close on many of their offerings except for some minor detail that puts up the stop sign. But, you’re absolutely correct in that it seems like their marketing efforts are not profiling them in their deserved best light. Let’s hope that changes. Really good video! I love JLC, and had a Reverso until a couple of months ago. I had wanted one forever, and bought it during the height of covid to secure another almost impossible to get piece. Unfortunately I didn’t try it on due to the circumstances at the time, and it didn’t fit well. I tried everything, including a $500 Casa Fagliano strap which improved the fit a lot, but it was never perfect. I took the hit and traded it in on a gorgeous Grand Seiko that I love. However, now that I know the Reverso size that works for me, at some point I’ll get a rose gold model.

Oddly I'm OK with JLC not being a pop star brand, they make terrific watches and some outstanding movements. The release of the Hybris was completely nuts but they only made 10 for sale and after emptying three sofas for lost money I still could not find the funds. I see JLC as a good honest brand that makes watches for the enthusiast and not focussing on todays fashion trends and I respect them for that.

I think JLC needs to lower their prices on their entry watches. At least match their prices to Cartier. I was deciding between a Polaris and a Santos Cartier, but when I tried the Santos on, it looked so much better, fit better, price was better, and came with an extra leather strap, i even purchased an additional rubber strap and it still came out cheaper. Don't regret my decision, love the Santos. Richemont got their money either way. But there is a part of me that wants a JLC, eyeing a Reverso in 2023.

Okay Brit - this is for my new JLC Therapist, Brit, JLC licensed therapist extraordinaire. I had the JLC Tribute Reverso in Pink Gold. I loved that watch and wore it shamelessly. After wearing that watch for 5 years, with all of my friends letting me know how ugly and the watch was, I was told repeatedly, it made me look like an old man and it was not a watch becoming with a modern style. Then the bomb, my wife also tells me two months ago that she ALWAYS hated that watch. I finally let it go!! I let phugly go, yes. The upgrade was an A Lange 1 38.5mm with moonphase. Did somebody say Reverso?! What Reverso. The pain has obviously subsided.

I’m a fan of JLC and their history. The Reverso is their most iconic model with a surprising number of variations. I sometimes wonder if there might not be a bit too much choice! I bought a duo face for the additional quirk of two watches, one movement. I keep toying with the idea of a triple calendar with moonphase but yet to find the right one at the right price. Interestingly, my Tank Louis Extra Plate (thin) has a deployant clasp stamped with an Edmund Jaeger makers mark which is really cool!

I have a Reverso and a MUT Moon. They are great. I get all the heritage, I say the name right, buuuut: I rarely wear them. I remember when I first wanted one. I wanted a Master Calendar, but also loved the IWC 7 day. The salesman said: let me ask you, are you a 70 year old frenchman? I got the IWC, and that is it: we all cheer on JLC and want them to be great, beut they are dandy and fussy and old man looking (so are a lot of VCs and PPs). They could have knocked it out of the park with the Polaris, beautiful design from their old catalogue, but too thick. They are one of the few houses that could deliver an ultra thin sports watch, and they missed the chance. People’s lifestyles have changed, we are more active and casual, but still want to wear beautiful pieces. No one wants Calatravas and Patrimonys anymore.

What I'd like to see is the impact of the 2016-2018 Richemont buybacks on their Pandemic-era sales. They gave loads of credit to their dealers in return for unsold inventory, and if that had the intended effect (keeping prices high and dealers loyal), and if the Pandemic slowdown in production kept the market from flooding with Richemont product, AND IF they've calibrated production this year to what their dealers can move; it could be that they're able to move product at an optimal price. If that's the case, then maybe they don't care what influencer-influenced people think. In 2020 their watches group earned €300M on sales of €3Bn (this was after the buybacks), so they're not hurting. They're moving product, and they can do that without JLC being a household name. (That's what Cartier is for, after all.)

Thank you Britt for doing this informative piece on JLC. I concur. You are correct. They don't get the respect they deserve except in the rarefied circles of seasoned watch enthusiasts. To dovetail onto your movie analogy, JLC is like the stuntmen and stuntwomen who do death defying feats of martial arts and acrobatics in order to make multi-billion dollar action films look believable, but no one knows their names and they don't get any Oscars for their work. As someone who has always worked behind the scenes as an analyst, in my own industry, the IT industry, only to see the project managers and IT executive staff steal the limelight, I appreciate anyone who is willing to give credit to those who work behind the scenes, in any industry to make that industry what it is.

Business-wise, JLC had been positioning itself as supplier. Although they are definitely sustainable, being not-well-known-enough is the consequence of this strategy. We all know Apple, but few of us know Foxconn (Apple's supplier). Creating separated brands for movement and watch might work if JLC is willing.

I completely agree with your belief that JLC is the best, I am a watch geek too, when everyone including Vacheron went Quartz JLC stay true to the old school movements. I have had three JLCs and when the salesmen rave about Rolex or PATEK I just laugh, most people simply do not know or care about what’s inside a watch as long as it keeps time or looks expensive, JLC has repeatedly amazed the watch world in Geneva with JLCs latest movements or newly created timepieces. I argue with salesmen over this and when I walk into one of our stores here in Las Vegas I continually see people buying various expensive brands like Audemar or Breget only to see the counter with the JLCs dying from loneliness, I have had two Patek Philips also but I still consider the Reversal and other JLC watches real works of art, JLC never lost faith that the quartz nightmare would pass, you are also right that a major problem is advertising, many celebrities have JLCs including the late Queen Elizabeth, she had a reversal. To me JLC is the true KING of watches, Rolex is tough but ugly and just boring, Patek Philip has not had a new idea since the WW11. It is a travesty that so few people know about all that JLC, please forgive my terrible spelling, I almost flunked in French. Thank You for defending the world greatest watch company.

I have many watches, too many to be honest. Rolex, Vacheron Constantin, Omega, Zenith, Panerai, Breitling, IWC, Tag, and a JLC Reverso. One day I might sell most of them, but not my Reverso, unless is to buy the 1931 REVERSO Tribute. I actually may add a master control. I do pay a lot of attention to movement, finishing and history. I will always have a JLC.

They need a better marketing team and definitely a better sports line. They use to do a Resverso Grand sport, And the Resverso squadra sport, I nearly purchased several times. The price hike in September took many JLC out of reach. Reverso duo face went from £8k to 10k and the master controls went up a lot as well. It’s taken then from aspirational to beyond reach

Seems like most brands raised retail prices. You call call an authorized dealer once you know the model you want, some places will give you a discount. Remember most JLC's are available in stainless steel which makes them more affordable. Many other brands only come in precious metals which makes them more expensive.

Very nice video. I'd add a 3rd issue: dress watches are less popular than sports models and JLC is thought of as primarily a dress watch company. Your husband's watch is a perfect example. They are a brilliant company producing things that are in less demand than other styles.

@@malikknows3510 they did have the Master Compressor line that was innovative, edgy and sporty. Perfect to fight in the sports watch arena and attract younger buyers. For some unknown reason they discontinued them. Big mistake in my opinion.

Great video. I own a few JLC watches a Reverso and a Master Reserve de marche in stainless steel. Not boring at all! They can be dressed up or down. Problem like you said that most non watch people don't know who they are, more of a connoisseurs brand which is ok. I think most non watch people don't know who Vacheron or Audemars is either. Look at Grubel Forsey and other great independence unless your a watch person you probably never heard of them same goes for hi end audio equipment, was never marked right. I like being under the radar. Like you said not the best marketing. Rolex is the most known for this. Buy what you like and ask for a discount from an authorized dealer. If not shop around.

Great video, Britt! Excellent and unbiased analysis! As for JLC I agree that the marketing is lacking and it has been like that for a long time. Everybody criticizes them in this area. This makes me think that they are happy with the current state of their business and sales. I miss the Master Compressor line, it was edgy, innovative and sporty. I think that discontinuing them left a gap in their offerings.

Hey Britt, bloody love your content 🙌 I also have a question - a JLC reverso is top of my list, I love the elegance and low key luxury, but I'm not sure if I should go for quartz or automatic?? I really value and appreciate JLC's history and expertise in movements and I'd go for an automatic in heartbeat if I had the money, but I don't. These watches are expensive so I'll have to save for much longer if I choose an automatic - maybe I'm just being a bit silly by wanting that? Is going for an automatic over a quartz just throwing money away? Any thoughts??

You know! I've just had a friend ask the same thing recently! :O NOW, I was team quartz! I thought "who cares on a two hand, closed caseback?!". It is still an amazing watch! BUT I find myself in team mechanical only because I prefer the guilloche! Bahaha. So... I choose mechanical but only because I aesthetically like it better. But either way, you will be getting a watch that is gorgeous and full of heritage!

The masters of marketing are Cartier, they sell Quartz at the highest prices because they target style and the ladies. All they need to do is to drop the name and go with the logo JLC and they are halfway there

Thank you for the JLC hit today WG!! Personally not a fan at all I gotta be honest . Respect the brand obviously ! In my view there isn’t a relationship between any of there references?!?! The Reverso is magnificent but totally it’s own thing! The Polaris looks like a 600 quid Certina and the likes of the Extreme world Chronograph and the Master Compressor just look like WTF experiments gone wrong! Their catalogue has no cohesive look unlike a Cartier or a Patek and Rolex catalogue.

@Britt Pearce Reverso 976. Reverso 1931 tribute blue face. Navy Seal diver, vintage 31mm gold men's dress watch. My late Father's. A Polaris is next on my list to acquire. Additionally I own Rolex, Sinn and Grand Seiko. The GS is almost equal to JLC. Rolex is a lovely watch but a very distant 3rd in comparison.

A couple of KZbinrs described JLC as an engineering company rather than a watch brand and I cannot agree more. JLC is like that little nugget that only watch geeks know and I really appreciate that, though I do agree it needs a wider audience.
