Finished rewatching Avatar: The Last Airbender as an adult today, and came looking for this! Truly one of the greatest scenes in the entire show, and one of the most emotional compositions.

The one thing that I used to hate about it was that I felt like the fight between aang and ozai was cutting into it too much cuz I was way more invested in it than that battle I mean it had cool choreography and stuff but zuko is just way more of a compelling character to me than aang is so I cared way more about him getting his get back then I did about aang's sudden and stupid dilemma about not wanting to kill ozai

The sound of Azula raging in chains like a rabid animal at the end of this fight is one of the few pieces of VA work that has genuinely haunted me.

I've seen similar takes, but Zuko and Azula basically switched places. In the beginning, Azula was the cold, calculated, and confident fighter, and fire bender, in general, while Zuko was the hot-headed one, the one to throw hands and flames without much thought. But by the end, it's Zuko who took the calculated approach; only firing when necessary, or when the opportunity presented itself. He even used more precise strikes similar to what we'd come to expect from Azula, like his aerial leg sweep that cut through Azula's fireball, instead of big bursts of fire, that would probably use up more energy than they need to. He even took advantage of Azula's degrading mental state by teasing her about her lack of lightning usage, something that she's done to him in all of their encounters iirc.

Azula is such a compelling character. There is no doubt that she is a sadistic sociopath who neecs to be taken down and is irredeemable but it is also incredibly tragic she ended up like this in the first place from feeling unloved by her mother and her father encouraging her psychotic behaviour as it was a useful tool for him. Its a villains defeat you know has to happen but just makes you filled with pity.

Bad remaster

Okay so I sync'd this and the old version up together (based on the first drum/clap section), and wow, it didnt work 100%, but like, its kinda slapped hard. The fact that theyre slightly different in sound created a really deep effect to the sound, and the different pacing and length meant that it would occassionally desync and resync. Very very good and thematic. There was a point in the latter half where the beats where completely off, but then veered into sync and it was kinda magical.
