I’ve always preferred the look of the Jaguar but preferred the sound of the Jazzmaster. The Jazzmasters wider field single coil and longer scale produces a fatter sound with more mids while still sounding jangly. I still want a Jaguar though. Lol. @@AudiomoMusic I kinda agree on the Jazzmaster bridge pickup having some issues :( Always sounded wimpy to me, could kinda beef it up by lowering the tone knob, but then it would take the sparkle away from the neck and middle positions. My compromise was getting some Lollar Jazzmaster pickups, the bridge is wound a bit hot, then with my 1meg pots, I have a treble bleed on the volume and keep the tone around 5, seems to be a good compromise between the usually very stark difference in sound between the neck and middle, and the usually too-thin bridge pickup

If I had to choose between the two as they are originally from the factory, I would pick the Jazzmaster, just based on the tone. But if I had my way customizing them, I believe that the Jaguar would be a way better platform for me, based mainly on the type of bridge and shorter scale length, which ends up creating a much more confortable guitar to play for hours and hours straight. For me, the only thing a Jaguar really needs, is more mids. So, replacing the pickups for some kind of Humbuckers, or trying a series wiring schematic with the original single-coils would be the way to go. And also, if we could add block/trapeze inlays, I think they would look a lot cooler, lol.

I would actually say the Jazzmaster would be a more natural feel than the Jag. I have a vintage spec 60s Jaguar, which I string with Labella flatwounds that give me a tight, percussive attack for classic surf or spaghetti western kind of rhythm sounds with enough low end thump for swampy blues and country folk. It has more of an acoustic character than most electrics. Compared to a Jazzmaster, the Jag is a tighter, more staccato and boxy sound that works particularly well for single string lines and arpeggios. It has a kind of scooped out and less distorted sound with gain that I prefer for fingerpicking. Where the Jazzmaster excels is for big, open sounding chords with ringing sustain and legatto lead lines. They tend to sound better with standard rounds. They both do jangle sounds well, but I think Jags are a little brighter. If your not sure which to get, I'd recommend a Jag for the Tele player and a Jazz for the Strat player.

That is true and another way around it, but the thing with those buzz stops are the other effects it has on the way the guitar feels tension wise and even slightly changing the sound. Paired with the right guitar that has very minimum string tension I think it's a great fit, but if the guitar already feels really tense as Jazzmasters can do given the scale length and thicker strings typically used on them, it can make it a bit much. On Jaguars I find in general I do find them more useful and less of a drastic shift in feel.

Jazzmasters sound like Strats with more powerful pickups and pots on them. They feel like other Fenders (save for the offset body) and in my experience, sound louder and fuller than their siblings. Jaguars sound a little different and seem like an evolution of a Strat. The shorter scale makes a hell of a difference. When I first played one years ago, I wasn’t expecting much because they weren’t popular, but I was amazed at how versatile it sounded. I bought a Johnny Marr Signature Jaguar almost a decade ago and I love that thing. I tend to reach for it once in a while as to not get too used to it, but I always find inspiration in it, write a new song or find a new sound from it. My Jazzmaster, though custom shop, sounds like one of my Strats on steroids and it’s tragically underplayed, as I find Strats to be better at demonstrating their sound.

From my perspective, tourists and kids usually prefer jaguars because of the look with all the shiny chrome plates and because kurt played one. And musicians usually prefer jazzmasters because it’s a better guitar overall. But i love jags too, fun to play.
@AudiomoMusic2 ай бұрын
It's a shame that so many people associate the Jaguar with Kurt for the guitars sake. Players like Tobias Hoffman are far better to listen to to hear what the guitar was both intended for and capable of instead of a dude that just bastardized the jag and mustang throwing humbuckers and swapping out perfectly fine hardware trying to make both guitars things they weren't. Tobias is arguably one of the best guitarists in the world and prefers the Jaguar to the Jazzmaster so it really does depend on the individual player. Between the two, one is absolutely not objectively better than the other as they have individual differences that make a direct "better" comparison nothing more than personal preference. For example a lot of great session players for country and funk music have been using the jag since the late 60's as well with the strangle because it's a sound only the Jaguar makes but sits perfectly. It's far more recorded across many genres than most people realize.
@paressehylton2 ай бұрын
@@AudiomoMusic Totally agree with you, it’s a very cool guitar and a staple. Why i think fender always sold more JMs than JGs (even since covid tourism and late nirvana revival) the full scale which plays better for most people (with regular size hands), the layout (toggle switch way more convenient, volume knob better placed more accessible / strat type knobs easier to grab with the pinky), and the sound of course. I can’t help but notice if I search « famous jaguar players » i’ll see a majority of artists that started on a jag when they were young (probably because of the aesthetics / chrome plates), then moved on to jazzmasters and never went back, and rarely artists that mostly play jag (and no one saw johnny marr with a jag in his hands before maybe 2008). It may be controversial, but sometimes i wish they would make more in-between scale, like a gibson 24.75’. As gibsons are noticably easier to play than teles or strats, but not intricate to play complex chords and too tight past the 12th fret like on the jags / mustangs. A not too narrow 42mm nut, an inbetween 8.5 radius like on some momoses, 24.75 scale, could be so perfect.
@AudiomoMusic2 ай бұрын
Fender had a pretty cool guitar in the Parallel Universe ii collection called the Uptown Strat, 24.75 scale, 9.5 radius, modern two point trem with two humbuckers on a Strat body and despite being awesome playing and sounding guitars didn’t sell very well. It took a lot of big sales for them to clear inventory on those and it’s a shame. Ideas like that are pretty cool.

Hard to vote against a Jazzmaster in any circumstance ( unless a tele is involved then it's in trouble hahah )

I have both… they are adept at different things and depending upon music style everyone would benefit from having both I do play my Jag more, but i love both.

I agree they are definitely different enough to justify both - I find they actually compliment each other well in the same song. I also prefer the Jaguar but I also love both
