Seeing these old classics that you know are worth a pretty penny up so close and almost rubbing on each other gives me heart palpitations. But then again it's nice seeing them not being put out to the garage and slowly dying doing nothing, but instead being put to the use they were made for.

I enjoyed that but never drove mine like that.......RWF 822 G A '68 Series 2, that I owned from 1971 to 1974.... The sound of it, when I pushed that button, made going to work worthwhile! The fastest ever achieved, on a deserted M62, was an indicated 134, at which I didn't want to go faster!

Jaguar inherited a beautiful, modern, aluminium V-8 from Daimler. They installed one in a new MK10 and it clocked 140mph. Lyons refused to use it in the e-type (or any car) because it wasn't a 'real Jaguar' engine. Would have been a game-changer.

Yep, title is a little misleading... Nobody got DESTROYED there.. The Cobras had the better acceleration, but the Jags could brake later and carry much more mid corner speed... so they won. I agree with an earlier post. This race and other vintage races like this one are MUCH more exciting to watch than anything out there now. No traction control (unless you consider your right foot traction control..) no anti lock brakes, no paddle shifters and tires that are so skinny they practically GUARANTEE a good show of sideways driving skills.

The rear suspension allows for more stable handling. Look at the Colbras, they were all over the track when turning. My old 70s Jaguar holds onto corners better than any other car I know. The rear suspension is a pain to work on however (you need a heavy duty jack and overhead lift to work on it) and rust has been/can be a serious problem even with the leaking fluids. :)

Shelby did more than just stuff a ford v8 in the AC. He did other minor styling and mechanical modifications to improve it. He could have done the same to the xke. A small block ford or Chevy v8 would have made the xke a better car along with Shelby’s other modifications that he may have thought necessary. With enough money Shelby could have designed a car from the ground up around the Ford engine. The Cobras heart and guts are American.

When I was a kid, my dad had loads of e-types -- sometimes two at a time. But the one I remember most was a lightweight ex-race Lister (I think), that had blown it's engine and been put back on the road with a tuned 3.8, and no soundproofing! My mother used to refuse to go in it because it gave her headaches, as it was so incredibly noisy. But I loved it. He used to drop me off at school and then blast it back up the very steep Westerham Hill. You could hear it going for ages. I used to tell all my friends he was a racing driver and was late for his race. Now you barely ever see an e-type on the roads, let alone something like that. Cool times! :0)

Great story. A few years ago I became acquainted with a guy who owned a GT40. He invited me to his house to see it in late August (very warm time of year, where I am). He said the car gets so hot that he only is able to drive it in late October/November. He also said it is so loud that he couldn't turn it on for me to hear it because it was obnoxiously loud, and really disturbs the neighbors. Here in the U.S., in the late '70's, I had an 8th-grade teacher who drove a beautifully-restored E-Type with a pale yellow paint job. GORGEOUS car.
