Representing the UK we have the Jaguar I-Pace the firm's first all-electric SUV offering, the I-Pace, whilst we have two competitors from America - the Tesla Model X 100D and the P100D.
Why both? Well, the 100D is close on price and power to the Jaguar I-Pace, but why not have the most powerful Model X there too for comparison? So that's what we did!

Matt/Carwow - for the brake tests please one time do a bunch of brake tests with the same car, so you can see what your margin of error is. You call winners in these tests, while they're likely just draws because the reaction time is more impactful than the brake performance.

As a Tesla owner, two thoughts: 1) I'm delighted to see that Jaaaaag appears to be very serious about the I-Pace, and 2) there's now a legitimate option for those who can't quite go for the Tesla design language (beauty in the eye of the beholder and all that) or who want a cheaper option than the MX. @@okallup8012 no, it sounds like a brained normal human being, pointing a huge failure on this video and to all the other videos of this bitchy Chanel. A 30cm long breaking difference is not accurate at all considering that there s no real physical line but an approximate cone on the side, cars with different lengths, drivers with approximate approaching speeds and finally 3 different drivers who could never break at the exact same spot and moment. The drag race is the only test accurate, cause the human factor is not important, but the breaking test is as shitty as Donald trump!!

Yea it is weird. Like it's common knowledge that you can make an experiment more reliable by doing it over and over and taking the average of the results. Electric cars may be an exception because of heat but it would make sense to at least do it with the petrol and diesel cars.

The blue Tesla was so slow to start off the line in that first race. Driver was asleep or just us terrible reaction time. When your cars start that fast, waiting a second off the line kills you.

The I-Pace is more off-roady while the Model X is more family-focused. The Model X has more room while the I-Pace has off-road performance. The Model X has the Tesla Supercharger available, while the I-Pace has to rely just on other public fast-chargers. The Model X has autopilot while the I-Pace does not. Conclusion: These are two different types of SUVs focused on different types of people.

I-Pace can be had with adaptive cruise and lane keep assist which is 90% of what ‘autopilot’ offers. As you say though, the cars appeal to different people. What is good though is the Jag appeals more to people who perhaps don’t want the statement the Tesla makes....which means more people may be swayed by the idea of an electric car 👍🏻

Well it really boils to user preference, people migrating from ice cars may find jaguar as a more friendly option as they are acquainted with the brand. whereas tesla will be the choice of more performance oriented people, both cars do a good job, tesla might be a persons dream car but his budget might allow I-pace to be his/her daily steed.

Comparing a minivan that can haul 7 ppl and lot's of cargo with a much smaller CUV is quite entertaining from the start. I-Pace is neither a direct competitor with Model X or Model S. Love that there are new EVs coming out and the CUV market is huge so Jag will sell a lot of those! For me personally I much prefer the Tesla and not so keen on the Jags look. Specifically not the front with the grill which I think looks strange.

The Model X comes as a 5 seater, with 6 seat and 7 seats as extra-cost options. Imo, it's quite valid to compare a 5 seat Model X with a 5 seat i-Pace. The i-Pace also has the longest wheelbase, and has slightly more head and leg room for the front two rows of seats.

It would make more sense to compare the I-pace to a ICE car that is of the same size. The Model X is a much larger SUV. The internal size of the I-pace is actually smaller then the Model S so that would be a better comparison if you wanted the clicks from going up against a Tesla, or for that matter Dual Motor Model 3 which is just a little smaller but quicker and 2/3 the cost of the I-pace.

Where are you getting that? The i-Pace doesn't have an EPA rating yet, and the Teslas don't have a WLTP rating yet. It's pretty hard to compare them apples to apples atm.

No-one knows how their ranges compare directly. We do know that Jaguar are confident of bettering their most optimistic published estimate of their EPA rating. We know that the Jag's published realistic range "when driven like a Jag" is longer than the *EPA* range of some Xs.

There are 2 model x 100Ds, late last year they increased hp, this seems to be the old one... I know the model s 100d went from 4.2 down to 3.6 and the x should have dropped lower than 4.9, correct me if I'm wrong

Glad you did a fair test as opposed to the Jaguar videos with Tony Kannan (Indycar racer). Jag made a big deal about using a P100D then switched it out for a 100D. Deceptive advertising at it's best. The Jag will certainly be a great addition to the EV market and it's a beautiful and excellent performing car; just wish Jag was more truthful

Those who own a Tesla can easily say at 1:20 that you didn't put foot on the pedal instantly (the 100D, middle car). Or Maybe you had a Chill mode enabled. Now, they may or may not loose a race, but No Teslas (be at 3, X, or S) have such slow start, except when they are in Chill/Family mode.

I wouldn't draw conclusions between the iPace and Model X 100D. In the 1/4 mile test at 1:18 the Model X driver was starting about 0,2-0,3 seconds late. Without it, those two would be almost identical. The rolling race at 2:15 showed that they are pretty evenly matched. Yes, the Model X is more expensive than the iPace, but also bigger. It's a 7-seater versus iPace having space for 5. On the other hand, the Model S P100D is a league of his own. Do a 25% slow-motion at 1:28 and see the power and acceleration numbers at 50-70 mph. It's doing about 565 kW at the battery (505 kW at the motors) and a 6-7 m/s^2 acceleration (that's 0,6-0,7 G, peak almost 1 G). But yes, this comes with a price tag. But brake test at 3:00? OK, it's possible that the Model X needed some more space, although 1 meter from 70 mph isn't that big. But a difference of less than 0,5 meters (doing 70 mph, 112 km/h or *31 m/s* ) is within margin of error. Just one mph more or less or not exactly hitting the breaking point distorts the results massively. You would have to do many tests with different drivers, discard 25% best and 25% worst results - to come a reasonable conclusion which car is better. And whichever car is better, the difference that small is - insignificant. But has this test shown that the iPace is a true competitor? Yes, if you look for performance, it is. Whether it is a winner or not is much less important, but it is definitely in the same class.

Liony Leftwich Jag fast charge up to 100 kw (Tesla 120 kw). The real problem is the lack of 100 kw chargers. Fast charging in Europe is mainly 50 kw right now. Tesla has over 400 Supercharger in Europe. Regarding OTA one thing is saying they are possible and another is actually do them frequently adding important new features and better driving assistant. We will see over time..

Difficult to USE all the horsepowers without getting a huge fine or prison time, so it doesn’t really matter.. The average person can’t afford this type of cars .. so please do a test with less expensive electric cars 🙏

@carwow: should have clearly pointed out, that you are comparing cars from different classes. It’s like comparing Q5 with X5, or X3 with Q7. That changes the margings quite a bit and is usually therefore not performed. But, probably due to both beeing electric. Next time, please clearly state those facts.

Yeah, the Model X is a 7 passenger SUV with twice the cargo room, the I-Pace is smaller than a Model S, and is about the same size as a Model 3. It is like racing a BMW X3 vs an Audi Q7. Makes no sense to anyone.

I have an ipace and I can say that battery level changes the results. In that video ipace battery shows around 25 percentage. The results change if ipace battery fully loaded.

Brake test was BS. Comes down to driver reaction time... i would say they are virtually the same. Also, im sick of Jaguar trying to conpare the i-pace to the model X. The Model X is a much larger vehicle. Different class altogether.

What "performance brakes" does he think the P100D Tesla has? Other than the red calipers, they're identical to those in the 100D! Also, convenient that he lists the "starting price" for the Jag, but it very careful to use the actual price of the higher-trim Teslas to help feed the _"Teslas are expensive toys"_ myth. No "starting price" for them.

For me, the Jag is a no-brainer if I had to pick: - The Jag (Here in Finland) starts at just 80k and is at most 120k while the Model X starts at 100k for the 75d five seater, and the base 100d is already the same price as a fully decked out I-pace. With the specs I'd like, the Jag would still be just 100k. - I like when design effort is put into cars and the materials feel worthy of the price, hell the Peugeot 3008 has better materials than a Model X and that costs just 23k. - I hate when all functions are on a touch screen. It'll age poorly and you can't use any functions without either distracting yourself or stopping. The model X is a great car especially for being a pioneer, it's just a bit bland and way overpriced for what you really get. But it's just window shopping me (I drive a '99 Rover 75) and for us youtube commenters anyway since probably a lot of commenters are too young to drive anyway.

Thanks for a more fair comparison of the top-end Tesla versus I-pace. The I-pace is a great feat by Jag., but I guess it is not worth wasting money on it, since it lacks so many other features compared to Tesla. But for anyone who just wants a marginally faster car than 100D and for less money, and who does not care about other features such as range etc. i guess I-pace is for you! 👍🏻

I test drove the I-Pace for 1 day and straight away bought one. Same night sold all my shares in Tesla too. Made a video about the whole thing. Posted yesterday. Grab a drink and enjoy some footage from Gold Coast Australia.

2:40 more torque does mean it's quicker. The lower torque car can have a shorter gear ratio. If the top rpm is the same it will have lower top speed. That if we consider a constant torque throughout the rpm range and also same weight of the cars. But if not, the torque curve also plays a role.

I don't really understand why acceleration is such a big deal in real life. The traffic in front won't accelerate any faster. The lights won't change any faster. Given the price of the Jag, and the fact that it looks like an awesome well specified vehicle, I think Tesla have reason to be very worried.

I’ve driven the 100D Model X and it’s slow off the line but picks up speed fast. I raced it with my P85D model S from 40-80 and it was a close race.

The grille on the Jaguar is unnecessary. If you look closely, the area around the Tesla logo is also a grille. This really doesn’t matter much anyway though, since both car’s batteries are water-cooled. I would just ask you: if Jaguar can’t get rid of a efficiency slaughtering hole in the front of their car, can they really innovate? Come on, they even added FAKE engine noises! Just get a model 3, or when it comes out, a model Y.

So the fact the performance also delivers would suggest its game, set and match for the Jag.... although of course that’s not the whole story as people buy cars for emotional reasons...

Actually no. For starters the 100D has significantly better range, and it has the supercharger network. It's also much bigger and has a 7 seat version. Then there's the software's quality and speed, over-the-air update, autopilot, falcon doors, and many little tricks that only a Tesla can do. Cost is not a fair comparison since the X is bigger. If you want cheap, buy the Model 3. I'm not sure about quality, Tesla had issues in the past, but I'm reasonably sure they fixed those by now. The Jag probably has nicer interior. In practicality the X should win overall, but that's not a 100% objective metric, it depends on what do you need. For example if you might prefer smaller cars, because you have to drive on narrow streets and park in tight spaces. Or you might want a big car, because you have 4 kids and 2 dogs.

Fair points regarding size, although the comparisons with the Model X are inevitable due to the fact it’s the only other electric SUV in existence. The reality is that plenty of people have bought a Model X and don’t need the practicality. £80,000 cars are more often than not bought for their luxury not their practicality (Ford and VW make plenty of seven seaters that cost half as much as even a 75D) The rest of your points are poorly researched and largely subjective. Have a read of the I Pace reviews and all of your vague questions will be answered. More than one publication has already said the I Pace is the best electric car on sale. This won’t immediately cause Tesla to implode, much like when Porsche get an average review for a car they don’t immediately cease to exist. It is possible for the rest of the car industry to do a better job making electric cars than Tesla you know? FYI, the Jag has OTA updates as well.

Mike Hart I'm not sure why would the I-Pace be the best EV. It's certainly good, and I'm happy that finally there's real competition, but I would still buy a Tesla for several reasons. A big one is the charging infrastructure. Another is that it's a proven brand, I know exactly what to expect, while the Jag has a few question marks, for example battery degradation, which haunts almost every EV except Teslas. Also a quick google search tells me that Jaguar doesn't plan to make too much of this car, I didn't find official figures, but estimates put it around 10,000 per year. Since Tesla already builds over 100,000 S&X per year, and the Model 3 production volume will soon be over 500,000 per year, I don't see how the I-Pace poses any threat to Tesla.
