This is a great video and has potentially solved my problem! I have discovered a problem that when my tank gets down to around 1/3rd of a tank, it starts to struggle to start. If I keep the engine going, it will go down to about 1/4 of a tank, a red restricted performance will come up then the car won't start. It is like there is no fuel. When I top up the fuel, it starts with no problem and no restricted performance. I get around this by keeping my tank pretty much full the majority of the time but I think I may investigate further thanks to your video!

Hi, thank you for watching and for your feedback. The electrical connections are always worth cleaning first. The tank pump lifts and recirculates the fuel into the swirl pot creating a suction that transfers fuel across the tanks, the feed / suction / low pressure pump which feeds the fuel filter / high pressure pump is integral / back of, to the high pressure pump. The fuel float situated on the side of the swirl pot as well as the pump itself ( or connections ) can cause problems. Thanks again for watching.

Hi, thank you for watching and for your feedback.The electric plugs on top of the tank do suffer with corrosion so best check those first. The float unit can be purchased from the Jaguar main agents and it slots in the side of the swirl pot, I think the price was just over £100. If you give Jaguar your reg No they should be able to give you the part number and the price.

Great video and step by step guide. Does the Jaguar XF 2.2 diesel have the same fuel pump as the Jaguar XF 3.0?
@crystalclearmechanics

Hi Nanu, thank you for watching and for your feedback. The 2.2 has a different pump, the low pressure pump which feeds the high pressure pump with fuel is integral to the High pressure pump ( fits on the back and should not be seperated ).

Hi, good job - I've seen several of your videos regarding the jaguar. I have the following problem in Jaguar XF 2.2D, maybe you can help me? At random times (usually shortly after starting the engine) there is a temporary lack of power (2-3 seconds), after which everything returns to normal. No errors. I have already replaced the throttle, MAF SENSOR and fuel filter. Could the problem lie in this fuel pump?
@crystalclearmechanics
@crystalclearmechanics 2 ай бұрын
Hi thank you for watching and for your feedback. Sorry for the late reply. The intank fuel pump lifts and recirculates the fuel into a swirl pot and in that process levels the fuel between the saddlebag tanks ( usually if it's a fuel problem in the tank then filling the tank up and testing the car should get rid of the problem while it's full.). The low pressure pump (located on the back of the high pressure pump on the top back of the engine ) sucks the fuel up from the tank / swirl pot through the fuel filter too the high pressure pump and into the fuel rail - injectors. The EGR valve ( dirty if no codes ) is a likely culprit or dirty throttle body, air leak, air filter etc. It's really without codes a case of trial and error. Mileage and service history is important to know. I do have a video on removing the EGR valve and will add one for removing and cleaning the throttle body. Let me know how it goes.
@karolt.5095
@karolt.5095 2 ай бұрын
@@crystalclearmechanics The mileage is only 70,000 km. The throttle, flow meter, fuel filter have already been replaced. There are no errors, I suspect that there is probably a leak somewhere on the air or vacuum lines but it is very difficult to diagnose anything without errors on the computer.... The spring on the EGR valve is functional, not cracked

Hi James, thanks for watching and for your feedback. I assume you have the 2.2 diesel. I am not aware of the reason your car needs to go into the dealership but it's always worth checking the electrical connections on the top of the tank / fuel pump unit and inside the tank as these have been known to cause problems. The only extra work the dealership may do is to drain the fuel tank before removing the fuel pump unit. Thanks again for watching.

It can then be hard to start, but works fine again when I put more diesel in and the light goes away over night. I have changed the fuel filter. Would this pump be my problem?

@crystalclearmechanics
@crystalclearmechanics Жыл бұрын
Hi John, thank you for watching and for your feedback. How full is full and how long or what does the gauge show when it stops leaking? It could be in the area of the filler tube. I assume the diesel leaked onto the road is underneath the tank ( drivers side )? If so I would take the back seat squab out (as shown in the video), leave it at home, go and fill the tank up, park the car, remove the big plastic grommet ( as shown in video ) and check on top of the tank for leaks. That will rule in or out whether the leak is from there. Don't drive with the grommet removed in case of exhaust gasses. Let me know what you find.

@crystalclearmechanics
@crystalclearmechanics 7 ай бұрын
Hi, no the fuel will not come on ignition, only when the engine is turning over. The low pressure fuel pump is integral to the high pressure fuel pump ( fits on the back of it and fits at the top rear of the engine ) the low pressure fuel pump sucks the fuel ( when the engine is turning over ) from the fuel tank through the fuel filter then feeds the high pressure pump which in turn feeds the fuel rail and then the injectors. The electric fuel pump that fits in the tank lifts and recirculates the fuel into a swirl pot ( in the tank ) and in doing so creates a vacuum which moves fuel across the saddle bag tanks, it comes on with the ignition but does not feed the engine directly. Tell me the symptoms how the car would not start? @@vvikaaka7496

I just bought a Jag XF X250 2015 2.2 diesel, but now it's giving me a p0087 code, which means "Fuel Rail/System Pressure Too Low". Any idea where to start diagnosis? Hi, thank you for watching and for your feedback. Can you tell me the symptoms and what led to the issue, did the engine cut out while driving, did it not start one day, did you run out of fuel any history would help. I will describe the fuel system for you. The tank pump lifts and recirculates the fuel into the swirl pot (the plastic yellow / orange unit in my video) creating a suction that transfers fuel across the tanks keeping correct levels, the fuel float fits on the side of the swirl pot. The low pressure pump is integral (fits on the back of the high pressure pump, top back of engine.) to the high pressure pump and sucks fuel from the tank through the fuel filter etc to the high pressure pump then into the fuel rail then injectors. The pressure control valve (PCV) is located on the rear of the fuel rail. To give advise I need to know as much as possible and then go from there. Thanks.

@crystalclearmechanics it was having a hard time starting, but it was still starting, so i thought it might be a low battery voltage issue, so i took for a nice long drive on the way back to the home after a 70km trip engine light came on, steering got hard as engine cut out so no steering pump i believe, engine system fault came up on the screen & it died. I managed to pull it on to the side. Scanned the code on my obd scanner it came back as P0087 "low rail fuel pressure." I don't think i ran out of diesel unless my fuel float is faulty. I suspected it might be a diesel fuel filter (black filter under the hood), but it seems like my in tank pump is not even pumping anything to the fuel filter when i took the feed line off from the filter. My in tank pump do spins though. Questions: 1. On the front of the rail is your fuel pressure sensor, right? 2. The back of the rail is PCV (pressure control valve, right? 3. Where is the high-pressure fuel pump located? Any other fuel system components than in-tank float/filter, black fuel filter, high pressure fuel pump, PCV, fuel pressure sensor, rail, injectiors? I'm in New Zealand so bit hard to find parts as well.

@@kumarsonu4848 Hi, yes the fuel pressure sensor is in the front of the fuel rail and the pcv is on the back. The high pressure fuel pump is on the top and back of engine, the low pressure fuel pump is integral (on the back of the high pressure fuel pump) and sucks the fuel from the tank through the fuel filter to the high pressure pump. The tank pump does not pump fuel to the fuel filter hence you don't get any fuel through when taking the pipe off the fuel filter. The cheapest and easiest job is to change the fuel filter ( I have a video about changing it ) You can also check your fuel gauge reading is correct ( the sender unit in the tank can cause problems, also the electrical plugs on top of the tank do corrode, problems usually occur at half a tank full or less) Fill the tank full of fuel and see if the problem goes away when it is full. Let me know. By the way, not sure what year your car is or whether NZ cars are affected but disconnecting the battery can cause loss of central locking on some XF cars.
@kumarsonu4848
@kumarsonu4848 15 күн бұрын
@crystalclearmechanics thank you. So essentially, there are three pumps, one in tank, one high pressure fuel pump & one low pressure that is integrated within high pressure that sucks the fuel out of tank instead of in tank pump pumping it towards to the filter. Yes, i am going to change the filter & but i have managed to bypass the filter & still no luck. It is sitting at approximately half a tank as well. I haven't disconnected the battery yet & kept it charged all the time, so I'm not sure about central locking. But I'm thinking of doing a fuel pressure test (do you know the default fuel pressure in the system? How many psi?) . Will fill up the tank and see how that goes. Then, look into the injectors, rail, sensor & PCV.

Great video. Where did you guys buy the replacement pump unit?
@crystalclearmechanics
@crystalclearmechanics 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks, We purchased it from a general used parts yard, £70. The issue we had was with the fuel gauge indicator, when full to half a tank no problem, below half a tank it would intermittently register empty causing engine cut-out problems ( computer ? ) when driving ( dangerous on a fast stretch of road or anywhere really ) it was a fuel tank float issue ( part of the pump unit ). The pump itself can be removed from the unit and replaced with a similer pump at a much lesser cost, I would think any diesel in tank fuel pump of the same dimensions would be fine, it would just be a case of adapting the electric plug connection.

@@crystalclearmechanics This is excellent. I'm so glad I found this. I have exactly the same issue in my 2012 XF 2.2D. When the fuel level get's down to around 1/3 full the engine goes into limp mode and almost impossible to start. After turning it over for 30 seconds or so it runs, you get 500m and it goes into limp mode again. My temporary solution over the last 2 years is to top up the tank when it gets to 1/2. It does give a hint it's getting near the limp stage when it takes longer than usual to start. Then I head straight for the fuel pumps. What parts do I need to fix that issue? the complete assembly or pieces?
@crystalclearmechanics
@crystalclearmechanics Жыл бұрын
@@surfonaut Hi thank you for watching and for your feedback. I will explain how the in-tank fuel system works on that car. The unit I take out in the video is called a swirl pot / fuel pump unit etc, the electric pump lifts the fuel up from the tank / swirl pot and under pressure back into the swirl pot, in the process creating a vacuum which syphons the fuel over from the other side of the saddlebag tank. The electric pump / the float and float module can be removed separately from the swirl pot. The low pressure pump which feeds the high pressure pump with fuel from the tank is integral to the high pressure pump ( fits on the back of the cylinder head ). The symtoms were, full to just under half on the fuel gauge , no problem, then the gauge would intermittently drop to empty, if it stayed on empty for longer than ( a guess ) 1 to 2 minutes the car would cut out and not want to start again. Jaguar at the time and the used car parts yard would not sell the float module on it's own so I had to buy the complete unit and chance whether the float module worked ( it did and is still ). It's worth trying Jaguar again in case they have changed their policy. Many thanks again for watching.

Hi, thank you for watching and for your feedback. The video shows how to change the intank fuel pump / swirl pot / fuel level sensor. Starting the car would not show the fault as ( in this case fuel gauge reading issue with engine cutting out intermittently with fuel level reading under half a tank ) rectified, the car would need a full tank and then run to near empty a couple of times to see if the used items are working correctly. The intank fuel pump / swirl pot creates a syphoning effect to keep the level correct across the saddlebag fuel tanks, it also sends the tank fuel level to the fuel gauge. It does not feed the high pressure fuel pump located at the top back of the engine or the low pressure fuel suction pump integral to the high preesure pump. I am glad you brought this to my attention as on reflection It may well have been better to have explained the reason for not starting the car. By the way the car has been running without issues since the replacement. Thanks again for watching and for your feedback.
