I picked up a warped dash vent on top RH of dash roll. Quite common on these. I changed mine to earlier swivelling Series 1 types on my V12 which are a direct swap. These are magical, and travelling along in a good one with the V12 purring is amazing. Driven contemporary Rolls-Royce motor cars too and I definitely know which I prefer for silky silent performance and refinement. Simply cannot be beaten if you get a good one!

I'm currently restoring one these. Registered in March '79, which makes it a very early Series 3. You are right, they are sublime to drive. I've had a '74 Silver Shadow Rolls, which I loved, but give me the Jag any day. Since I was 19 I've had various XJ's, starting with a Series 1. 54 now and I'll always have one lurking in the background.

Sounded more like firing up a merlin engine as opposed to a car engine... Wonderful.

Sorry if I'm asking a dumb question but I thought they stopped making the series 3 in 86?

William Simmons - it was 1992 I think?

They continue to make the Series 3 until 1992 only for the 5.3 V12 i.e. XJ12 and Daimler Double-Six since the power plant could not fit under the bonnet of the XJ40 body and there was still a demand for the V12 engine. In 1993 they finally made the XJ40 with the 6.0 V12

I got a 1992 V12. they ran the V12 on the old look as the XJ40 could not take the V12 inside the engine bay! thank GOD. I got exactly the same car as this. same colour same everything. except mine needs money spent on a bit of rust.
