I've a 4.2 X356 & never liked the weedy looking single wiper on these XJs. Had a Merc w210 & single wipers on Mercs of that generation looked solid & chunky & had the most amazing wiper action I've ever seen. Also had a w163 but like all Mercs released between 95-05 both were a poorly built rust buckets.

The Jag like you said are great wafters, I have had four in my time , all great cars. Good luck with the offer, it will be great using the Jag for car shows where it is a bit of a drive away. I think you’ve got a goodun there Rick. Seems very solid and as you say will look really nice with a full detail. Would prefer the normal coloured wood than the Smokey wood fitted to the Sports but…..what the heck. Quite like the colour and upholstery colour combo. Even at 2,500 pounds it’s pretty cheap. Didn’t see what the mileage was. If owned by older gent and being a 3.2 unlikely to have been driven hard. Like the idea of the full aluminium body. Saw one ‘in the raw’ (no paint) at the BMM. Hope they accept your offer.
@oldclassiccarUK4 ай бұрын
Agreed, I've seen a lot of rusty ones of these but this one looks ok, I assume it's had some remedial work over the years but if it had been done badly it'd be showing by now. The later aluminium cars are much bigger overall, taller, more space inside too but less sleek IMO.

Hi Rick,beware of Nikaassil liners.I had the same model in the same year which shouldn’t have had them but for some unexplained reason,very much did.Mine started to have problems around 75000 miles which led to it’s demise in my hands,although Someone eventually put a new engine in it and it lived on.Definitely worth checking for.l loved mine and would have kept it for ever had it not had those issues.

Very interesting and different video. The Jag looks sound to me, well cared for and cheap at the price. What is the mileage? Did you check the oil condition? Useful to have the "aged assistant" along for a second opinion! Getting it up on the ramp is a big bonus. Reminds me of the days before I could afford new cars of sleepless nights worrying if my decision to buy a particular second-hand car was the right one! Shame you didn't take the youthful assistant along to learn what to look for when his time comes to dip his toe into the risky world of second-hand car purchase. Does Mrs OCC get to have a new handbag if you splash out on the Jag?!
@oldclassiccarUK4 ай бұрын
I think the mileage is just under 120k, most of that was in the early years, more recently it's been doing a few hundred miles a year until going out of use 2-3 years back. It was still getting a full service every 12 months even though only doing a few hundred miles between changes from what I read in the file. Oil looks new, not sure about handbag(s) but I imagine something will be suggested if necessary!

@@oldclassiccarUK I'm amazed at its good condition underneath. Can't wait to see if you put your hand in your pocket. It would then be two OCC V8s - burble, burble........

Even though it has been sat for a few years this big (or little) cat looks in quite good shape. As it has a new battery and alternator the garage should have cleared any errors on the dashboard, errors would likely be related to dead batteries. One good thing about filming the car is that often any colour changes would 'stick out like a sore thumb' on the camera much more perhaps than the naked eye might notice on a dull day. The underside looks good and probably has a coat of waxoyl or similar which of course is much better than the old school under seal that can hide a multitude of sins. I would buy it if I were you even if there is a bit of haggling to be done (needs an MOT ? and so on) it looks to be a good example, there are some 'rot boxes' out there! Good luck Rick and thanks for taking us along, very interesting especially getting a good look at the underside, not often you get that chance when thinking of buying a car. 👍👍
@oldclassiccarUK4 ай бұрын
Yes it was handy to have a peer underneath, it all seems pretty clean under there for a 20yr old car, it spent most of its life in a dry garage and did very little mileage in recent times before going out of use 2-3 years back.
@louisboshoff91424 ай бұрын
Writing as I am watching your vid. The car is absolutely perfect underneath! This looks better than even our 20 year old cars in dry South Africa. The mechanicals you can always fix but OMG the body seems to be so corrosion free!
@oldclassiccarUK4 ай бұрын
It does look to be quite good for a 20yr old Jaguar, it may have had the odd bit of paintwork but if so, it would have been years ago and if it was hiding something, it'd show by now I think

The biggest problem with aluminum bodied XJs is that the body panels were glued in place instead of being welded. As time was an issue in production sometimes the glueing wasn't up to standard and water ingress from the front floor area would mean that the ECU and the general electronics would be soaked in water. A good mate of mine knows a garage owner who does a lot of work on Jaguars won't even take on the aluminium bodied cars any longer as the work to fix the sealing issues and access the ECU to replace its just not worth the hassle.

I like the color and I assume the green stuff will clean off without leaving pits in the paint. Sitting for that long is a worry with fuel injected, digitized cars. I wonder why it didn't sell before now. Otherwise, it appears to be in good shape and cared for while it was in service. 2500 pounds or thereabouts seems reasonable to me for what it is. Letting go of the Jeep is a good move IMHO.
@oldclassiccarUK4 ай бұрын

@oldclassiccarUK4 ай бұрын
No it's a Jaguar engine (Jag was owned by Ford at the time though)
@JonDingle4 ай бұрын
Those tensioners were modified in or around 2000 so shouldn't be a problem. I have a 3.2L V8 XJ8 which I bought for just under £600. It needs work and also stood for about 18months. Don't buy any car over ten years old if you want to avoid spending money. Jaguar's are no worse than other brand. That Jaguar has a current MOT which expires on 15th May 2025 and didn't have an "Advisories". So whilst it looks neglected it is a sound car. Subject to the price, it could be a very nice easy clean up and run Jaguar! A friend of mine has the initals RHM.
@oldclassiccarUK4 ай бұрын
If I understand right, this one should have the 2nd gen tensioners, the best of all (3rd gen) were introduced after the model went out of production and are often retro-fitted (I had these done on my 98 XJR). Agreed, any "modern" that gets to 20+ years of age will inevitably have gremlins itching to make themselves known :-)
