Thank you, just done the job on my 2002 XKR after drawing inspiration from your video and it's fantastic! total cost for Garmin Drivesmart 50 with full Europe maps £120 and it is a million times better than the original system from the Flintsones age!

This video was brilliant, thanks for uploading, love my 2006 XKR but hated the GPS. Cheers from the U.S.

I am late to the party, but the whole reason I stumbled across this was because I am looking to replace the old factory installed GPS. I want to know about GPS reception. How does it receive a satellite signal when it is mounted 'in' the dash. Today it seems like the best way to go is with a Carplay device with a touchscreen. I really want to know about this satellite signal reaching the unit.

Excellent idea. I'm not too confident on the wiring. One wire goes to the white/red but where does the other one go? Earth??? Can anyone advise me please?

What did you do with the old connections to the unit you removed? Your video suddenly shows both connections gone but no explanation of what you did with them. Did you manufacture the black bracket you used to conceal the wiring?

Excellent application. 😊 I am planning on the same, but for a Mercedes CLK320, Integrating over the existing double din stereo screen.

This looks like a great idea, as the old XKR sat nav is really poor. Now people have used it for a while, how is it going as I'm thinking of doing it ?

Hi, This an excellent mod. I want to do this on my recently acquired XKR, but want a little more clarification regarding how the Garmin switches on i.e. most are switched on at the top of the unit and if this is hidden inside the dash, how do you switch on? thanks
@MrPrettyprettyone10 жыл бұрын
Great modification... couldn't you just keep the old switches in place for aesthetic purposes instead of the speaker mesh? Really good tutorial and nicely executed!
@Datz609 жыл бұрын
Just did that - you do need to strip all the electronics and screen away from the sub-facia, just a matter of screws not at all complicated. I did remove the switch pcbs from the electronics and heat glued them to the back of the sub facia just to retain the switch feel and joystick movement. The Garmin unit I attached as above with 3M automotive tape but also diagonal cable ties across the rear for additional security, there are some useful slots in the moulding for that. I have found the sound is still loud enough .HTH. P.S. The Garmin was on offer at Halfords and with a 10% Jag club membership discount the cost came down to £93

So , I try the same with two Garmin Sat navs, both find no satelite for Navigation, how is it in your car ?
@markjohnson85022 жыл бұрын
Oh, this is my question, but you haven't gotten an answer in 8 months, so I am not hopeful. a lot of Garmin units have an external antenna connection, so that may be an option. The factory installed GPS has an antenna behind the rear seat. Maybe that can be used.

If the brown/green wire is not live with ignition check relay in the boot , I think it's relay 6.Garmin will power down when external power is switched off i.e. when the ignition is tuned off.

Now that's alright. I just became the proud owner of a new - for me - '04 XKR (my first non GM vehicle ever) and I was thinking about how useless the factory GPS was. Doesn't even have my street on it which has been around for 35 years! I was thinking the same thing about putting an off the shelf Garmin in its place and wondering what the hell I'd do with those big rectangular holes. I think that idea of putting grilles in there is pretty cool. And it does serve a purpose with the speaker on the back anyway. Only problem I see is when you have to go to update it, you have to pull the dash again doncha?

This is brilliant, i'm about to buy an XKR with old sat nav in it, I would love to do this mod! If anyone else here has an XKR and wants to do it, perhaps we could work together on it?

Great, tried this... The screen sinks down in the heat. There is no power on my brown with green striped wire. Anyone know where it goes?

This is a great video and I am planning on putting in a Garmin DriveSmart with a wireless Garmin rear view camera in my "03 XKR. Has anyone tried this combo? I checked the dimensions of the 2597 unit 777lurker installed to make sure the unit I wanted would fit. Hearing about the problems everyone else has had with their OEM Navs, I guess I don't feel as badly that my original GPS went out as quickly as it did (dealer said at the time that replacement would cost $1500, so a portable Garmin was just fine). Seems like the step of putting in a female power receptacle to take the male cigarette lighter power cord from the Garmin is a bit bulky. Can't you run a line off the fuse box with a 12v to 5v step down, which takes up less room, and then splice in the power line off the Garmin?
@robertmartel54478 жыл бұрын
Did you have any difficulty with signal strength given that the unit is recessed into the dash.
@joeneary39367 жыл бұрын
Signal strength has been great, at least for me.

Has anyone out there done this who also has adaptive cruise control? My ACC doesn't work, but I had it booked in to be fixed. In the meantime, I did this mod to install my Garmin. I was then told by the garage that they could not fix the cruise control because it needs the original sat nav to be working. Any views or comments would be welcome.

David. I have added my thoughts to the text after spending ages pouring over the diagrams. I don't think the two issues are linked.
