Jeff used to like telling his stories of these days when he would come to my flat in Saaaaaaafend-On-Sea to buy 'a draw' as they call it.... Jeff is a good storyteller, Jeff would tell me about how he got into Reggae music, his ideas for bizarre cover versions, He wanted to do a version of the Bee Gee's 'Night Fever' but call it 'Light Fever' to protest wasteful (and ugly) Xmas lights, "a billion watts of power, burning every hour..... Light fever, Light fever, we ain't got to do it!" He sang😃Jeff told about his early recordings with Red-Eye and Malcolm Goldmaster⚖who was building his first tunes for his 'Revelation Hifi' SoundSystem at the time...... Malcolm had instigated a competitive beef with Abashanti SoundSystem as many young pretenders do, a common strategy for the wannabe is to insult or start 'beef' with an established or accomplished 'artist' as a covert and manipulative way to assert 'parity' with them..... So Malcolm Goldmaster the wannabe upstart 'dissed' the rising star Abashanti to assert parity with him..... Abashanti played his new 'Dubplate' Riddim and Malcolm commented "yeah, respect Jah Tubby's" into the microphone to insinuate that Abashanti (or "wobbly eye Joe" as Malcolm called him) was only a copy of his mentor Jah Tubbys...... Abashanti responded by telling Malcolm to "Open your EARS Rasta!"🦻and much offense was caused much to Malcolm's delight 👺...... Jah Free told me that when he released his first record he wrote an almost hidden message on the run-out groove which is a somewhat of a tradition for Vinyl fans, discovering the hidden 'easter egg' messages, often cryptic or some kind of 'in joke'...... Jah Free chose the phrase "ALL EARS OPEN" for the run-out groove on his first record, he just liked the phrase, i guess it's inclusive and unprejudiced, and that is exactly who Jeffery Bertolla AKA Jah Free is ....... Jeff told me that shortly after He released his first 'Jah Free' record, he was in Saaaaaafend with his young Daughter and they saw a Dog sat in the driver's seat of a parked car and they were sharing a good moment laughing at this rare spectacle, they walked on and Jeff heard Malcolm Goldmaster shouting at him "You're DEAD TO ME JAH FREE!", steam coming out of his ears and laser bolts shooting from his eyes..... It was Malcolm's dog in the car, They had not recognized the dog and i think Malcolm had just got the car so they didn't know it was Malcolm's dog or car ......."Hello Malcolm, Nice to see you too" Jeff replied, trying to be a good example to his young Daughter....... "I know what you meant by 'All Ears Open' on your record, you did it Because Abashanti told me 'Open your EARS Rasta'......." Malcolm bellowed down the street at Jeff........ Malcolm's paranoia and narcissism puts HIM at the centre of any and every action by anyone he feels is in his world, To Malcolm there could be no other reason for Jah Free to write 'ALL EARS OPEN' on the runout groove for his first record, it HAD to be about Malcolm, a cryptic jibe at Malcolm's expense........ it's much like when Malcolm discovered that his former mentor Red-Eye had Lung Cancer and was going into hospital for surgery..... Malcolm embarked on telling as many people as he could that Red-Eye DIDN'T have Lung Cancer and was, in Malcolm's exact words to me "Making it up to hurt ME"! 🐍😔Yes, Malcolm Goldmaster Diss told me and many people that Red-Eye went around town falsely claiming to suffer Lung Cancer, in Malcolm's words, "because he knew it would get back to me and he wanted to hurt ME"!!!!......... Jah Free didn't try to explain as Malcolm bellowed down the crowded street at him, bemused and scared shoppers watching the spectacle....... Malcolm can be terrifying when you know the deep well of boiling lava rage that is inside of him and Jeff had his young Daughter with him....... Malcolm once punched his Guitarist Pete Condon on stage during soundcheck just as Reggae historian 'Penny Reel' walked in😄i jumped onstage and got inbetween them, taking one of Malcolm's fists to my jaw in the process, no good deed and all that........ i DID pass on the Dog/Car anecdote to Malcolm as i was friends with both of them at the time and i am SO above taking sides in such feuds, which is why i refused to recruit people against my haters as they did to me......... Jeff did say , if you see Malcolm, and he knew i would, pass it on that there was never any ill intent or nasty hidden meaning in 'ALL EARS OPEN'
