I lived and worked in Joburg in 1985, based in Hillbrow and worked at Bank of Lisbon building, Sauer Street. I returned to work and live in SA in 2011 to 2013, this time living in Birdhaven, close to Wanderers and Melrose Arch etc. My offices were in Sandton (of course!!) I love Johannesburg, and have encouraged many a Brit to spend time there when visiting SA - so much more interesting and vibrant than The Garden Route!! Watching this video brings back so many memories of a trip that was amazing. @chaole10008 жыл бұрын
Any violence is not likely to occur unless you go into a township where crime is rife. Discrimination happens to all groups of South Africans whether you are black, white, coloured, etc., but these prejudices that people have about each other are not acted out upon. Just be careful to have car doors locked and not have valuables in sight. There are a lot of poor marginalized people here and people may take the opportunity to steal anything in easy sight. You do not need a gun on any tour. That would just be silly. This isn't the US and it's not a war zone! Especially if you're a tourist, you are not going to be visiting any gang territory.

Peter. People always say, the city is dangerous to walk around to the visitors. It what the tourist agency say also to charge you for it. In any place you can die or have problems. I have been visited alone, Australia, Italy, Estados Unidos, Spain, United Kingdom, Cuba and now for what I see about South Africa I going to go as well with friends or by myself. Believe me is the unique way to enjoy the country, feeling the heat of people, and not a taxi driver. Only try to not take video camera with u or jewels, uses smart phone to take a picture o video. Take care.

Thks for this and fully agree with you. However, there are many places where caution is needed. I have traveled extensively and always listen to advice from local people. Several locals said that Joburg was unsafe for us to walk round by ourselves in the day and definitely a no go area at night, hence this is why we used a tour company. Nothing would have given me more pleasure than to walk round Joburg by ourselves experiencing the city like I did when I lived there. I love South Africa and had no issues with walking round Cape Town etc. The places you mentioned; I have walked round all without hesitation.

So Maboneng's Johnathan Liebmann is "the white people"? *LOL* Guess one has to sing for one's supper as a tour guide!
