This place doesn't need traffic lights any more. Jaywalking and hanging out right in the middle of the street is just incredible.

I lived and worked in Joburg in 1985, based in Hillbrow and worked at Bank of Lisbon building, Sauer Street. I returned to work and live in SA in 2011 to 2013, this time living in Birdhaven, close to Wanderers and Melrose Arch etc. My offices were in Sandton (of course!!) I love Johannesburg, and have encouraged many a Brit to spend time there when visiting SA - so much more interesting and vibrant than The Garden Route!! But its true, you have to watch your back at times!

My partner and I traveled back to SA in 2016 as well. Joburg was our first stop. He is from SA born and bred. I was gobsmacked by the size of the city. Watching this video brings back so many memories of a trip that was amazing. Its now 2020 and sadly our trip back to South Africa which was meant to be in April this year but that was put on hold by the Covid 19 pandemic. I hope we get to go back in the near future once it has all passed. I can honestly say that SA and whaI saw, people whom We met and the beauty of the country will always remain with me😁😁😁

We stayed in the Crowne Plaza Rosebank and there was a tour company in the reception area. This was not a tour they normally did and I requested one of their drivers to take us as I lived in Joburg late 70's. They were very reluctant, however, they final agreed on the basis we didn't get out of the car. Only wish I could have walked round the city!!

Went right past our apartment there (we let it out now), an area that has gone from chic and international 25 years ago to a seriously dangerous place now. Going by in a car is alright, but getting out on the street is best done in a group, or hustlers be on top of you in an instant. Independent of who you are.

Thx for sharing hillbrow was my town no place can compare to the vibrancy openess and joy of spending my teenage years in such a town. It shaped me ,and made me the Person i am .Miss you HILLIES EATING BIMBOS on a sunday afternoon then chilling in cafe zurich. Ironically i live today in Zurich. But if i can wave a Magic wand and turn hillbrow back to the future, i would be back in a flash. It is not R.I.P HILLBROW . It should be welcome back after a looooong sleep. I was at wits and first lived in Highpoint then The Sentinal followed by Quartz hill . Then of to the Suburbs Fourways .. Then in 97 the big move to Switzerland........ How i miss my Hillbrow days, but at least i was the last Generation to experiance the Hillbrow dreammmmmmm

lol Johannesburg is a large city, some areas are ugly and some are beautiful. They drove through Hillbrow which is not a pleasant area, but other downtown Johannesburg areas such as Ghandi square, Maboneng, Braamfontein are beautiful, and if you go out of Downtown Joburg into areas such as Sandton, Rosebank, Randburg etc, you will see how beautiful it is. Every city has bad areas, it's not just unique to African cities.

@chaole1000
@chaole1000 8 жыл бұрын
Any violence is not likely to occur unless you go into a township where crime is rife. Discrimination happens to all groups of South Africans whether you are black, white, coloured, etc., but these prejudices that people have about each other are not acted out upon. Just be careful to have car doors locked and not have valuables in sight. There are a lot of poor marginalized people here and people may take the opportunity to steal anything in easy sight. You do not need a gun on any tour. That would just be silly. This isn't the US and it's not a war zone! Especially if you're a tourist, you are not going to be visiting any gang territory.

Please tell me what year this was taken. Certainly not recently. Carlton Hotel I am sure was not open in recent years. I am not aware of a single operating hotel in the CBD of Jo'burg that could be classed 4 Star. The passengers in this vehicle are from North of England. Don't be fooled CBD not safe for people of pale skin even day time. It is not a shame , it is a disgrace. I first saw Jo'burg in 1966, people went to Majectic Cinama in evening dress. If it was still in business you would need a military Escort should you want to visit these days.

Per title, 2016, Carlton Hotel was closed and empty when we visited. In fact all hotels in central Joburg were closed due security issues. The shopping centre below Carlton hotel was apparently open. You are right, I'm from Manchester. I lived and worked in Joburg and really loved the city and RSA with great memories. So sad to see the high levels of crime and corruption. I had visited with a view of retiring there, however, concluded my retirement would be very short! Thks for your comments, really appreciated

@@JahDestiny hi Peter, Thank you. Picked up accent same place. I left 1964 , lived in Jo'burg before moving to East London got married to South African Girl. We moved to Malawi for 11 years before coming back to RSA. I never expected to see the drastic changes over the last few years . Parts of Jo'burg a hell hole and crime out of control. Murder of Farmers in horrific ways. I love Africa have 2 sons & 5 grandchildren , worry about their future. I own my own Engineering business and both boys work in the business. The old Jo'burg was a great place, world class and very safe. Hillbrow had excellent Night clubs , now filled with drug dealers, thugs and prostitutes not a place to go even with armed escorts. Thanks for response. Keep Safe & God Bless.

@@hasanx4637 This city has been dragged down into shithole status. Whites choose not to live in poop heaps - that doesn't make them racist. Calling them that appears to be just your tired old excuse for excusing the trashing of everthing you touch.

Peter. People always say, the city is dangerous to walk around to the visitors. It what the tourist agency say also to charge you for it. In any place you can die or have problems. I have been visited alone, Australia, Italy, Estados Unidos, Spain, United Kingdom, Cuba and now for what I see about South Africa I going to go as well with friends or by myself. Believe me is the unique way to enjoy the country, feeling the heat of people, and not a taxi driver. Only try to not take video camera with u or jewels, uses smart phone to take a picture o video. Take care.

Thks for this and fully agree with you. However, there are many places where caution is needed. I have traveled extensively and always listen to advice from local people. Several locals said that Joburg was unsafe for us to walk round by ourselves in the day and definitely a no go area at night, hence this is why we used a tour company. Nothing would have given me more pleasure than to walk round Joburg by ourselves experiencing the city like I did when I lived there. I love South Africa and had no issues with walking round Cape Town etc. The places you mentioned; I have walked round all without hesitation.
