Drag has been around for thousands of years. Just because your world is the size of a teaspoon don’t assume everyone’s is.

@@megannwalsh dude, everybody knows this "thousands of years" shtick by now. doesn’t change what i wrote.

It's easy to make a comment like that; even some of the RuGirls are perpetuating this view of drag pre-2009 as though no one thought it was "cool." It is, however, absolutely absurd. It's also frankly an insult to RuPaul herself because the true extent of her influence started way back in 1993 and even she had queens that influenced _her._ Wigstock (Lady Bunny’s annual drag festival in New York City) grew from a handful of homeless people in Tompkins Square Park in the mid-1980’s to more than FIFTY THOUSAND in the mid-90’s. _To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything! Julie Newmar_ would never have managed to get Steven Spielberg as a producer or almost every major male star in Hollywood fighting to play the drag queen roles that ultimately went to Patrick Swayze, Wesley Snipes, and John Leguizamo. A major Hollywood studio-backed “drag queen fairytale” movie required a LOT of mainstream interest in drag. Some want to argue drag's overall influence in the "mainstream," but I've been performing at the same bar venue in a smaller Wisconsin city for thirty years and we've consistently packed the place with a capacity of 350 that entire time. Its been popular everywhere for quite a long time. From this day forward, will the art form be split into "pre-" and "post-" _Drag Race?_ Most likely. But don’t disrespect an era you’re most likely not old enough to recall yourself. There are _many more_ people out there in addition to RuPaul that pushed drag to where it is today and it’s really sad that anyone would shrug that off with a comment like you wrote, but it’s hardly surprising. And if you're as young as you seem, there will be a day in the future when someone young makes a flippant and dismissing comment _you_ find offensive, but hopefully you'll be as understanding of the foolish things kids say in their naivety as well. (Oh, yeah - insert a ridiculous tongue pop here and maybe an Okurrrr too).
