Yeah, it's a pretty blatant rip-off of SF II, isn't it? Spinning Bird Kick indeed! Although the zoom-in business of the game is more like Samurai Shodown. The SM game runs about as well as Samurai Shodown did on 3DO, too. That game had massive slowdown issues on the 3DO! The system just didn't have enough memory! On the other hand, Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo actually ran very well on the 3DO. Capcom was known at the time for pulling off minor miracles with ports of its arcade game to consoles that had "known issues." (The consoles of the time -- and I mean ALL of them -- were stingy with system memory which led to problems with slowdown, load times, and tinny quality sound on most of them.) The Sega Saturn ultimately turned out to be the console of choice for CSP-2 ports but that didn't help Capcom because the game industry (and arcade games in general) turned to polygon/3D after 1996. I don't know how many bozos I encountered at the time who would not listen to me about the console fighting game ports... It all had to be polygons or PS1-only. I had both the PS1 and Saturn so I knew the strengths of the systems. Too many bought the hype of the time because they were too poor (and jumped on the Sony bandwagon because all their buddies had PS1's) or listened to the asses who never played games on both systems. The Saturn was definitely much better at 2-D and had superior control pads. The PlayStation 1 pads were awful and that system in general had wonky controls. I'm not gonna dispute the general superiority of the PS1 for poly games -- I had games on both systems that clearly looked crisper and had higher frame rates on the PS1 than the Saturn BUT the situation was NOT universal. There are definitely polygon games that were better on the Saturn but those were done by superior developers and there were very few of those on the Saturn which was harder to develop for! (Lobotomy, Sega, and Tecmo released the better polygon games on the Saturn with the Virtu Series, Quake, Duke Nukem, Power Slave and Dead or Alive 1. The last 4 games were clearly better ports on the Saturn than they were for the PS1. Sega was exclusive to its consoles at the time but did port many of its game later to the PS2 and PS3.) There were games on both systems that controlled/played much better on the Saturn. I actually preferred to play Tomb Raider on the Saturn because of the PS1 version's controller issues. I don't know how many times I accidentally died or fell off cliffs because the control pad didn't respond crisply to my inputs! Traditional 2-D games fell by the wayside after the PS1 was released although 2-D fighters did semi-well in arcades for a while longer. 2-D fighters were no longer console sellers by the time the PS1 and Saturn showed up in the West. No 2-D fighter released for the 32-bit systems sold anything like the 6.3million copies that SF2 (the original game from 1991) sold on the SNES/SFC worldwide. The sales figures I saw for the best-selling CPS-2 ports to Saturn were well under a million copies, maybe in the ballpark of half a million to 630,000 at best. Nowadays, you wouldn't break even on a new console game like SF5 if you sold much less than 3 million copies if it even DID break even at 3 million copies sold!

Nah, that's just old school fighter spam. Mercury's spin kick is really hard to block, even for the com, so just spam it till you win. Kind of a crappy way to win, but it does work. :T

I think it was region-free, though. I'm pretty sure it would play on American-territory 3DO's without modifications. I doubt they bothered to do region-lock for 3DO games because they just didn't sell that well. The bigger problem for this game in particular was that it was released at the height of Sailor Moon's popularity so it's actually a harder game for fans to find -- and that's in spite of its mediocre quality. None of the Sailor Moon arcade games or fighters were fantastic...

Among the SM best games ever made I can include the arcade beat 'em up, Another History the rpg for SNES and for the fighting genre this one has the better look, too bad you can't play as Saturn but at least this game looks so much better than the SNES ones, it looks even better than the PSOne. Hope the anime reboot would bring us decent games, not like "La Luna Splende"

Better audio but geez was the animation bad for even back then! I think even the GOOD Ranma 1/2 fighting game on the SFC had better frame rates! The 3DO was a borderline system. It was allegedly 32-bit but barely better than the SNES/SFC and Genesis/Megadrive in reality. It had the same problems as other CD-ROM systems of the time -- too little memory and really not enough horse power as far as the CPU's were concerned, either, but the overall specs for 32-bit were on the low side for the time. We just all bought into the hype and the reality was the 3DO was barely above an FMV player! I was amazed by some games like the Capcom port of Super Street Fighter II Turbo (which was excellent for its time) BUT felt a bunch of games had issues (Samurai Shodown was AWFUL on the 3DO) and FMV like Rebel Assault was the general run of the mill for 3DO. I had my 3DO for about a year but got rid of it shortly before or after the launch of the Sega Saturn... I still have my Saturn nearly a quarter century later. It and the PS1 were much betters systems than the 3DO... PS -- You can definitely tell it's Aya Hisakawa voicing as Sailor Mercury. Her voice is so distinct. If you've ever watched Devil Hunter Yohko, that's probably her best-known lead role for many anime fans. Shame they never revived DHY and it's out of print on home video at the moment... At least in the States.
