Solid list Tucker. As a Jakartan i’ve tried all the restaurants you listed and i can say they’re never as good as where they’re originally from (e.g. jakarta mie aceh is not as good as mie aceh in aceh) , but jakarta is good grounds to try all the food in the archipelago. Here’s my list: 10. Ayam Goreng Suharti (fried chicken royalty) 9. Sate khas Senayan (unique sate peanut sauce) 8. Ayam Gepuk pak Gembus 7. Pagi Sore (behel friendly dendeng) 6. Solaria (strictly for Nasi Goreng) 5. Bakso rusuk Samanhudi (upgrade to Rusuk package) 4. Bebek Kaleyo 3. Imperial Kitchen & Dimsum (best affordable chili oil) 2. Bakmi GM 1. Bandar djakarta

I totally agree that the place of origin will always be the best. But, if you wanted to try diverse Indonesian cuisine in just one place….. it’s gotta be Jakarta. Great to see your list and the best thing about this video is discovering where the locals like to eat. Definitely curious about Bandar Djakarta and Bakmi GM.

A very insightful video! Just curious though, what do you think of Bakmi GM ? And would you say Natrabu suits more for western palate than Pagi Sore? And Remboelan compare to Rempah Bistro for that matter?
@tuckereats91466 күн бұрын
Hi, thankyou ☺️ Bakmi GM, my honest opinion is…… I’ve never tried it, but this is not the first comment about it so I should probably hit it up. Natrabu or Pagi Sore, I think my western friends would choose Pagi Sore purely from a hygiene perspective but in terms of flavour profile I think they could handle Natrabu better than Pagi Sore. And Remboelan vs Rempah Bistro….. Rempah is definitely easier on the palette for my white friends but still I think Remboelan would challenge but wow some of them.
@pisaukaratan6 күн бұрын
@ great, thanks for the insight! So I guess if the guests are looking for a bit more adventure, Natrabu and Remboelan are the places to go 👍 and yes, please do check out Bakmi GM, especially the ‘yamin’ style chicken noodles. @@tuckereats9146 For seafood, try Layar in Kebon Jeruk! Originally from Surabaya, Layar is possibly the best all-round seafood in Jakarta for me. Other choices would be 212 Wiro Sableng, Pondok Pangandaran, and Seafood Ayu, all located in Kelapa Gading. Their crabs are amazing. For pork dishes, try Marpadotbe (near Rawamangun in East Jakarta).It is IMO the best Batak cuisine in all of Jakarta. Every single pork dish there is beautiful, but the fish there are also nice! Other pork dishes that are worth trying include Kacamata (Hainanese-style 24-hour resto, got a few branches around Jakarta), Pokenbir (modern fusion style in Kuningan), and Babi Tjoy (also Indo fusion-style in Bintaro).

Hi Tucker, new subscriber here! Love that you showcased different types from high-end to more international-friendly to local-favorites cuisines from different regions and islands of Indonesia in Jakarta! Showing glimpses of different flavors Indonesia has to offer. More recommendations I would add: One that can rival Remboelan is Noesaka in One Satrio (their selections of Chicken Sate and Beef sate (Aneka Sate Ayam and Aneka Sate Sapi) is to die for so better to come hungry! Gulai Singkong and Rawon Tunjang is also recommended), Minang Sakato in Jl. Tebet Timur Dalam Raya in front of Mie Aceh Abue (Minang Sakato is a bit off the beaten path as its a typical small Padang stall and is not on google maps apparently, it is a typical Padang takeaway that you just pick something and buy from their different selections, I would suggest getting Ayam gulai, sayur singkong and rendang amongst others!), and the closest you can get of getting Nasi Campur Bali in Jakarta like in Bali if you go to the Pura (Temple) Pura Adhitya Jaya in Ramawangun (this is the furthest location so you might wanna take grab or gocar taxi, but they have small stalls like Babi Guling Jaen San, Nasi Campur Bali Ibu Dewi, Warung Iga Made etc and to my Balinese friends and me its the closest you can get to a delicious Nasi Campur Bali, also make sure you come early if you visit on weekends cuz a lot of people go there). Anyways I enjoyed your video and I hope you enjoyed your time Jakarta! Let me know if you need any more recommendations I'd be glad to help out!

@@tuckereats9146 Of course! Also protip and I'm sure you already know!: (some) restaurants/warung actually have instagram pages and have their menus in their descriptions/picture posts esp in big cities/areas like Jakarta, Bali, Surabaya, Medan etc. For example, the whole menu of Noesaka is linked on their instagram page. And also sometimes even as an Indonesian traveling to other cities/islands I try to look at the google street views when I'm looking for places to visit or have a bite to eat. And a bit of correction when I said about Minang Sakato being off the beaten path, the road itself is relatively lively as there are many different food stalls and restaurants as Tebet area (both roads of Jl. Tebet Barat Dalam Raya and Jl. Tebet Timur Dalam Raya) have a lot of food places. Enjoy your next trip wherever you are in this world!

Hey Tucker, interesting list! As an Indonesian, I’m also always on the lookout for places to take foreign friends, so it’s great to see a perspective from you. I agree with your number 1 choice-quality and accessibility are a win. My family enjoys eating there as well. 👍 For a unique experience, I’d suggest Lapo Porsea in SCBD for Batak food from North Sumatra, especially their roast pork and carp dish. Try it soon-they’re facing some backlash from folks who think a Lapo (Batak diner) should be more modest! On free-range chicken and duck, I get the appeal now as an adult-the flavor is just unbeatable (my favorite is bebek bumbu hitam Madura). I grew up preferring the meatier, genetically modified poultry but now I’m all about the free-ranged birds. I do miss Nando’s since they closed here many years ago. Regarding Bubur Kwang Tung, I don’t see it as very representative of Chinese Indonesian food, the fact that it’s halal doesn’t make it any distinct from your regular Chinese congee. Dishes like nasi campur (mixed pork rice) and babi hong (soy sauce pork) blend Chinese and Indonesian flavors better, giving them a truly local twist. For Minahasan food, Beautika is solid, but authentic North Sulawesi cuisine usually includes signature pork dishes, as it’s a Christian-majority province known for its unique flavors. I’d suggest Tinoor, but I don’t know if it fits your idea of a bule-friendly establishment. Lastly, that tanginess in Acehnese cuisine at 13:57 is thanks to palm sugar vinegar, a distinctive feature that deserves more attention, especially since most other regions here stick to regular industrialized vinegar. Great list overall for foreigners easing into Indonesian food. Cheers! 🍻
@tuckereats914610 күн бұрын
Thanks Kilan, this is good intel as usual. It’s interesting the influence of Chinese food culture on Indonesian cuisine. As a foreigner we think of Nasi Campur as certified Indonesian and make no Chinese connection, but I guess the history is deep. I’ve saved Lapo Porsea to my maps, it looks amazing and Batak, another whole cuisine that I know little about, super exciting. I saved the Tinoor too, I’ll try to hit them both up next time I’m in town. Thanks again 🙏🏼☺️
@KilanEatsandDrinks9 күн бұрын
@@tuckereats9146 Ah, sorry. I reckon as a foreigner you’re thinking of Balinese nasi campur? I was talking about the usual nasi campur you’ll find with rice, chicken, BBQ pork, roast pork, spiced egg, bakso, sate - the works. Anyway, yeah, definitely check out Batak food at Lapo Porsea. Or, for a proper authentic vibe, hit up one of those gritty little “lapo” joints where they serve pig’s blood gravy and tuak (palm wine). Cheers, mate! 🍻
