Great clip! These were the days when the Tonight Show was a real TALK show! Great segment. I don't think you'll find anything like that on daytime or latenight tv anymore. Not for years, I'd say. I hope you have more Tonight to post. This is a great service and reminder of what a great talk show it once was. Joe

Wow!! Henry Morgan also on there. Man I wish NBC hadn't wiped all those videotapes. I'd enjoy seeing more of The Tonight Show from New York.

Was Henry called to testify before HUAC?

The Johnny Carson Tonight Show was in color from day one (October 1, 1962). In fact, the Jack Parr Tonight Show started broadcasting in color in 1960.

While the color is a little out of sync, it's still great to see this from a videotape source, with that "live" look and great audio quality!

I wonder if the Erlich family still has the original 2" quad tape this clip came from? I think most of the color errors are due to a poor quality transfer to VHS/cassette tape.

Thanks for sharing this. The long form interview is alive and well with Charlie Rose, and Jon Stewart often goes long with the authors and others he has on. A lot of folks think Tonight was in b/w in those early years. Not so, but the comm'ls were. The cigarette smoking - on air and on comm'ls - routine in those days. Was that ashtray big enough? Trivia: the cigarette box on the desk was not the one from the famous 70's Rickles episode.

Unlike today, the producers back then assumed, correctly, that the vast preponderance of the viewing and studio audieance had the sophistication and brightness to engage with such challenging,thought provoking and erudite content.Councillor Ehrich's dissertation is all more relevant today.It is curious that color critical products such as paint and men's shirts (today's money:just over $38) were presented in monochrome.That teddy bear needs to have more cigarette smoke tar in its fur.

Are you sure this isn't from 1964. I found a NY Times TV log that stated Ehrlich was on the 4/22/64 Tonight Show--nothing listed for 1963.

A neat look at blacklisting and the red scare just as that period was easing. How about that CIGARETTE COMMERCIAL near the end with the two guys SMOKING ON AN AIRPLANE! Man we need to take stock of the liberties lost since then, and just how good the Tonight Show WAS at serious discussion (especially Paar and Carson).

Boy where did you find this show in color??? I have the same show and it's in black and white kinescope. Could this be a segment of an only existing color print from this show?

I wonder why 2 people didn't like this? DeForest Kelly did a pilot about a lawyer. Isnt this the cat that pilot was based on? The chick in the shirt commercial looks like Tina Louise.

What word does Jake Ehrlich use at about 7:50? Mobrey?
@JAKEeSHOW7 жыл бұрын
Mop·er·y -The action of committing a minor or petty offense such as loitering.

Good word. Gonna use it one day!

How tragic to see Johnny pushing the ILLEGAL TOBACCO DRUG at 25:00! The attorney should have SUED the CRIMINAL TOBACCO PUSHERS for selling a drug which is ADDICTIVE, DEFECTIVE AND LETHAL, when USED AS INTENDED!
@MrJoeybabe257 жыл бұрын
How can it be defective if it is used as intended?
