Obuun, Mul Daya Ancestor | EDH Three Ways [Commander Strategies for Every Player]

Obuun, Mul Daya Ancestor is a new Naya (Red, White, Green) commander, making it's debut into the Magic: The Gathering Multiverse for the first time in Zendikar Rising, in one of the Zendikar Rising Commander decklists. Joel offers 3 different strategies for building Obuun in EDH: Strong, Fun and Mean. Buffing Obuun and focusing on getting the most out of a high power, starts things off in the "Strong" category, followed by Landfall Trample for the "Fun" way, and then finally the "Mean Build," we will be leaning into board wipe and destruction, and really hit our opponents where it hurts. To the Mul Daya nation of elves, the spirit world and the mortal realm are equally important, equally real, and equally present in daily life. The spirits of the dead are full-fledged members of the Mul Daya nation, and Obuun is first among them.
In life, centuries ago, Obuun led the elven rebellion against the Bala Ged Skyclave. In death, he is the key advisor to Speaker Hazzan, the leader of the nation. Even though Obuun has been dead for ages, it in no way impedes his influence. On the contrary, the ancient elf spirit holds an unparalleled mastery of both the spirit world and the forces of nature. Speaker Hazzan's influence is heightened by his close relationship with Obuun, but he would lose his honorable position if he were ever seen disagreeing with Obuun or disobeying his commands.
About the Three-Ways Series:
Some people like their chicken wings sweet while others prefer them scorching hot; either way, you are eating chicken. Magic the Gathering is a game with many different rules and building a Commander deck that works takes some time and strategy. Understanding the commander of your deck will help inform a deck-building plan that works for you. In this series, Joel discusses commander strategies for every player. This broad-strokes approach will give you a basic breakdown of the commander and three different ways you can build your deck to work with its abilities, without providing a full deck-tech.
What is Commander:
Commander, officially recognized on June 17, 2011, originated from a format called EDH (Elder Dragon Highlander-- there can only be one). The first time we played EDH was around 2009. It is easily the best way to play Magic: The Gathering. The idea was to have a casual format with 100 cards and only a single copy of any one card, with a General: a singular Legendary Creature card in its own zone that can be cast any time, once you have the mana for it. If your general is removed, it goes up by a casting cost of 2 for each time it is removed. Once WOTC officially recognized the format and printed the first Commander product, your General was instead called your Commander and instead of the format being called EDH, it instead became recognized as Commander. If you ever hear anyone say EDH, they are talking about Commander. Make sure to know the cards that are banned in the format before building your deck (listed below).

despite many expectations, my experience with Obuun was always very good. This Card grows very quick and with a a land which is as strong as obuun you get your opponent down very quickly. Maybe it is my lack of experience with magic in general but i think this commander is very good-

My coworkers convinced me to get back into mtg and start playing commander with them every Friday. I bought obuun bc he fits my play style but always wonder how I can make him more powerful. I’m not gonna lie this deck is good and I love it just perfect for beginners but I am gonna be honest there are some cards that are pretty weak too but after watching this I hope I can kick my coworkers asses now

I haven’t even finished the damn video yet and you’ve already knocked it out of the park so much harder than ANY other content creator has put out so far. Dude, I’ve known about Traverse the Outlands and it’s my go-to ramp spell especially in a deck like Grothoma where you get him out consistently on turn 2-3 and then cast Traverse turn 4 get 10 lands out of your deck lol

I got a forest matter deck where the creatures get pumped by the amount of lands / forest i have in play. Traverse the outlands has sometimes brought over 10 lands under my control by casting it.

I'm seeing a lot of different takes on Obuun. So if he is in the commander zone, you can keep adding +1/+1 counters to Obuun for each land card that enters the battlefield? And then on your attack phase, you can tap and turn a land into the elemental creature with his 3/3 PLUS all his +1/+1 counter?

Uhh no creatures ability works in the command zone unless it states otherwise. So short answer is no he has to be on the field thats why he says wipe "before you play Obuun"

@@JakeandJoelareMagic You need to pay 10 mana just to draw 3 cards - Harmonize does that with 4 CMC. The internet is wrong about a lot of things.

@@JakeandJoelareMagic its VERY bad. Like extremely bad. Theres other stuff you are constantly putting mana into. Theres WAY better draw cards in green. Momentous fall, all the enchantments that say if u have a creature with power x during upkeep draw a card. Cause ya u get more activations of seers but in reality how many times do u think u will activate it? While the others are free draws everyturn. So unless you can get a constant 2+ draws a turn (req 2 landfall triggers and 4 mana) then its not worth it. When you are researching if cards are better id reccomend not using edhrec as gospel

@@JakeandJoelareMagic Basic and generic ideas. Your "Strong" build is simply stompy. If you want to build a strong deck you need to go for broken not, "Me hit you hard." Also your card suggestions are pretty basic and run of the mill. Whenever I'm brewing, I go to Scryfall and search for the most basic terms within my color restriction and look at every card, and I still don't find every possible synergy. There's no depth in you ideas.
