So I used to volunteer at St. Jude children's hospital and most doctors would tell parents that the kids just need calories. So if the child wanted chicken nuggets and fries let them eat that. It's one less thing for the parents to worry about. For this man to have the audacity to do this is just maddening.

When I was 13, I had a bicycle wreck that caused a 5 way skull fracture and I spent 4 days in the hospital after my surgery. My dad literally went and got me food from whatever restaurant I wanted for every meal. We RARELY ever ate out, fast food less than once a month, a nice seafood place once a year on my grandmother's birthday, but he knew that me being happy would make my healing process go better. I had fried oysters twice, McDonald's, Arby's, and a Jack's chicken biscuit and hashbrowns for breakfast every day. I was almost sad to have to go home after those 4 days rather than having absolutely hated being in the hospital. When my neurosurgeon came by to see me to approve me for discharge, he told my dad he'd never seen a patient be that happy while still having an eye swollen shut and blood dried into their hair so I don't think my situation would have somehow turned out better if I'd had to eat ground beef, raw eggs, and liver instead.

When I was 9 or so, I just left hospital after being in for 4 months due to my intestinal failure getting worse. Before I had managed on really slow broken down amino acid tube feeds direct to my intestines, as my stomach was utterly broken but my intestines still had a little life left in em (not til that hospital trip at least lol). I ended up having to be put on IV nutrition through a line that goes into my chest, to my heart, a 24/7 infusion. As I rocked up at school, I was only going for 1 hour a day, to ease back into things. I made my way down to my classroom as the reception staff knew me and trusted I could go down a corridor on my own. Except, in that corridor was a lady setting up a healthy food stand, waiting for lunch time where she would get students to put the food in their lunchbox on one side of the table, and on the other side she would put 'better' options for each item. So, she saw me and thought she could do her thing for the first student of the day. Important info for this part, is that at the time I was visibly VERY underweight and malnourished. Also, any food I ate, I would vomit up. I had just had a tube installed, that could connect to a drain bag so I could at least have liquids, soup, frozen Popsicles etc for flavour, and drain it without having to vomit. People don't realise, but not eating for a long time kinda turns your brain feral. No matter if you're getting adequate nutrition from another source, if you don't physically eat buy mouth, your brain gets fixated on 'must eat must eat' , and I would get fixated on food, watching cooking videos, even being driven to eat non food items just to satisfy my brain that was going nuts bc I thought I was starving to death. So to help, I would eat ice or Popsicles when I got that 'urge', and cruching ice especially would calm my brain. So back to the story, I was eating a popsicle and had a type of backpack that would hold the IV nutrition bag, the tubing and the pump , so looking at it you would just think it's a regular bag. The lady launched into her healthy eating talk, and asked me what I had brought for my lunch, I said I didn't have anything. She insisted I was lying, as she could see my nearly finished popsicle. She grabbed the backpack off me and opened it up, I guess because she thought I hid my lunch in there. She was obviously confused, I tried to explain my situation but I hadterrible communication skills back then (autism) and couldn't find the right words. She kept semi yelling at me when I tried to explain that I couldn't eat, she didn't understand so eventually I just pulled up my t-shirt and showed her the drain bag. By then, a teacher heard the yelling and rescued me. But the lady insisted that even if I had an illness, I should be eating healthier foods than a popsicle. Long story, I'm not very good at summarising sorry. It's kinda funny to look back on but terrified me at the time

Thank you for saying this!!! My depression and shame around eating processed foods (thanks media) led to an eating disorder. Years into my recovery, I broke a knuckle on my right hand and it took so much extra energy learning to do everything with my left hand that my therapist recommended making frozen meals you get at the grocery store to give me one less thing to worry about but to also make sure I was getting enough calories. I’ve gotta say, having a professional encourage me to eat whatever I could, even if it was processed, was so freeing and prevented me from relapsing with my ED.

I actually used to be a child patient of St. Jude! At that point, it was hard to eat anything at all and I was more likely to eat something I liked. So what if it wasn’t the most healthy, was it going to kill me? No. In fact, the “bad food” helped because I ACTUALLY wanted to eat it. I had to find ways to make going to the hospital more enjoyable because watching your parent go through it all is really REALLY fucking difficult. The cafeteria was my escape to be able and enjoy so really good food that didn't kill my pocket bc we already are struggling financially. The food made me happy and was something I had to look forward to so I could keep some sort of sanity. Fuck that dude for shaming hospital food and shaming the staff for enjoying it. As a recovered anorexic, any calories are better than none. For sure. Even now, my depression makes it hard to have a healthy appetite and keeping easy, processed food around keeps me from unintentionally starving myself. In inpatient mental care, they provided lots of options and alternative menus and snacks. And logged our eating habits for us. And I'm not even a chronically ill child. I was 100x pickier as a kid as I am now. As many kids are. Add a chronic illness into the mix, and probably meds that screw with appetites, and you have a very difficult eating problem to tackle. Any food is better than none.

When you're in hospital, all that matters is that you intake enough calories for your body to continue fighting the good fight. I had extensive stays at children's hospitals during my childhood. After my second mouth surgery, I could only eat soft foods. Did they give me puréed healthy foods? No! I had ice cream, ice blocks, and mashed potato the majority of the time. I was four and a picky eater. When I recovered more, I took trips to the cafeteria to eat ham and cheese sandwiches and cake with my family. Food is food and, when your physical or mental health is failing, any calories is better than no calories. Eat your fast food, eat your processed snacks, eat your cake. The main thing is to restore energy so you can keep going.

vinegar was used historically for laundry but it was more used as a fabric softener and to get really strong scents out of clothing. so it's not necessarily the worst for your clothes and if you don't use too much it won't make your clothes smell like vinegar but it does NOT sanitise your clothes. So even if he doesn't smell like vinegar, his clothes are not clean so it's still disgusting. It can also damage certain washing machines so wouldn't recommend it for a washing machine.
@haileys5224 Жыл бұрын
Actually vinegar is good for washing machines. There are a lot of silicones and other non soluble chemicals in laundry detergent and especially fabric softener. Vinegar actually breaks down product build up wich can cause your washing machine to break or be less functional. IT’s recommended to to use to clean or the washing tub, or to use in replacement of fabric softener. So it’s still not detergent. It’s still just good for washing machines and should be recommended to use as a fabric softener.

Wait, am I just having an Australian moment, or are cafeterias in hospitals...nnnnot what the patients are served on the daily, but rather more there for the visitors and for the patients if they want to take a break? 🤔This may just be a cultural difference, but in hospitals down here, patients are served a set menu for each day with fairly limited choices, and it's usually on the much healthier side. When I had a family member in hospital, she'd get the healthy, more-like-a-decent-homecooked-meal delivered to her, and *I* would be the one skipping off down to the cafeteria and grabbing a box of tendies and a Vanilla Coke. Also, there were, like...sandwiches and yoghurt and fruit juices in the cafeteria, too, so you could easily have a pretty healthy meal, if you wanted -- I just chose the comfort food option, because, y'know. Loved one in hospital and all.
@hollyvbruh899 Жыл бұрын
yes you are correct! the patients are served something from a menu etc. but the cafeteria is form like visitors- and my mother who is a nurse says she goes down to her hospitals cafeteria to eat her lunch. so yea the patients aren't eating the food from the cafeteria.

As a child I was usually at Texas children’s hospital at main district every 6 weeks for remicade IVs ! There was Italian, healthy snacks, salad and soup bars, subway, and Chick-fil-A! Being there for so long at a time as well as for years ? I never got tired of the food hahaha. I had dietary issues and they could make sure everything was good for me ! I don’t think as an adult I’ll ever complain about hospital food seeing as a lot of them don’t get paid enough to be dealing with frustrated, upset, and sad parents dealing with their child being sick, or sick adults with dietary issues or being frustrated as well !!! I’ll always be happy with food I can actually eat being delivered to my bedside.

The vinegar one is actually legit. Vinegar smell dissipates and with laundry, the water rinses the vinegary smell away. It's good for cleaning. I know 2 different large families who buy vinegar by the gallon for all their cleaning. I did it for a while but I missed my smell good chemical scents lol

I don't have a lot of experience with hospitals but isn't it mainly the visitors and staff that eat in the cafeteria while patients get a prescribed meal brought to their room
@kaylyndavis5827 Жыл бұрын
what’s funny about this is that when you’re in the hospital especially when you’re very sick you have meals made for you and have a meal plan based on your illness. like the children who are ill most likely aren’t eating chicken fingers for every meal and drinking vanilla coke every 2 hours. the cafe is for visitors who need something quick or workers…like he’s an idiot. when my moms in the hospital she’ll ask me to sneak her processed food because she’s not allowed to have it

Ok maybe you’ll address this later in the video but if his person clearly has never had to hit a certain amount of calories to take a medication that makes you sick haha Sometimes the only palatable thing is something “bad for you” (without even getting into the moralizing of food thing). When I needed to hit 500kcal for meds, a rich piece of cake is still 500kcal

@@dajiyahmcae1880 no, actually. Had my sister stay in the hospital for a type of lung disease when she was almost 2 and they didn't care if her food was healthy enough, because illnesses actually destroy the body that all that matters is that the child's eating, unhealthy food tends to have more carbonhydrates that directly transforms into energy, which helps kids in the long term.

I work in a hospital kitchen and i dont know if every hospital is the same, but mine is vastly different in what is served in the cafetira and roomservice. Cafeteria is for the families of patients and employees so its not as healthy, roomservice is for patients and they usually have strict diets and need healthier foods. Plus even in the cafeteria, there are healthy options. It seems like he just wants to complain.
