How many times have you used vector graphics in After Effects only to find them blurry or pixelated? There's nothing more frustrating than knowing how something should be working when it doesn't. In this video, I'm going to explain how After Effects handles vector graphics like shape layers, text layers, and Illustrator artwork and why it can sometimes look pixelated instead of crisp clean vector art. I'll also show you how Illustrator handles vectors differently than After Effects, and how to make sure you know how your artwork will display once you export it.

@jakeinmotion For whatever reason, maybe over a decade ago, I just tend to use the 'auto resolution' setting, as it was a bit more forgiving on older computers, and it always shows the preview at the correct resolution. and I tend to also use standard magnification points with the ", and ." keys - which works When other designers send me projects they always seem to manually set the resolution. Are there any benefits/pros and cons either way? i can see that if you use 'fit up to 100% it would work best on full, and maybe it'll make fewer cache image files this way.

You have to turn on the Motion Blur in the Subcomp on each layer, to get the "Sun" do Motion blur to the Subcomp. For Puppet tool you just have to change your Workflow. For example make the subcompact you will puppet tool bigger to have more resolution the Main comp have to handle. But yes, puppet tool & Shape Layers are no friends. I think the naming "Continous rasterization" is the wrong term - I would call it "Handle the Layers in the subcomp like they were in the main comp". if you understand this, you know when you can use it, and when not.

The rasterize button in AE has always been a source of confusion to me and everyone else I know that uses AE. One area you could add to to this video is this point. You could always just say “Make sure to always have the Continuously rasterize button on.” BUT, sometimes, this breaks certain effects you have going on inside the comp. I think one is if you have layers inside a precomp with layer Blend Mode set to Multiply or others, this can break the multiply effect in the main comp. If not this example, I know there are others, but I don’t fully understand why this happens.
@JonnySlider

The reason is the order in which AE renders stuff. Activating collapse transformations changes that order. I won't pretend that I remember that order but this is the reason why that happens. If I remember correctly there is a nice tutorial on that but can't remember where I watched it some years ago.
@angrypotato_fz
@angrypotato_fz 2 жыл бұрын
@@cenkozmercan Yeah, knowing the order explains a lot WHY AE does some things, but it's still complicated how to achieve the result we want :D I think the video you mean, explaining the order, might be Caleb Ward's "Using Collapse Transformations and Continuously Rasterize in After Effects" posted on School of Motion channel - very informative. I think Jake also touched on this subject in one of his early videos about Mattes (on this channel).

thanks so much!!! that was a good revision of the concept. How about "what's the difference between "Move all the attributes...." and "Leave all..." when we precomp" ? I still don't know the difference but I haven't ran into much problem either so I never bothered trying to learn about it. It will be great if you can shed light on when to use one over the other. Thanks
@cenkozmercan
@cenkozmercan 2 жыл бұрын
Say you changed some attribues of a layer like applying some effects on a layer like fast blur or clipped it, if you move the attributes the PreComp layer won't have them, but they go inside the layer which is in the precomp now. If you leave them, then they will be added to the precomp layer, and the layer inside that precomp won't have them. Might not make sense when read, but try it yourself and you'll understand it better. Apply an effect to a layer and precomp it both ways to see where that effect goes. Or try clipping it and do the same thing ;)

What's your workflow when dealing with parenting and massive scale animating? For example, layer A starts off scaled very small (10% scale), to be parented to layer B (think a for-now hidden object in the distance). When it's time to "zoom in" on layer B to reveal layer A, by the time layer A gets to be full screen, it's pixelated (as if AE is scaling up the 10% image 10x, rather than returning the 10% image to its own original 100%. Not sure if I'm making sense lol. But I feel like I've played around with the continuously rasterize button, but it didn't work as I'd hoped.
@angrypotato_fz
@angrypotato_fz 2 жыл бұрын
I think I know what you mean. In such cases I prefer using expressions and link scale or position there, to have greater control on the details. However I have similar problems when I'm working with some simple 3D animations, where I want the layers to move on different layers - and the ones closer to "camera" get pixelated, while the background needs to be extra wide to accomodate for being far away from camera. I usually end up with huge resolution layers, to have the closest elements at 100%, but I doubt it's a correct workflow. I'd also like to see Jake's comment about this.
