Love seeing all the mics and setup. Pretty nuts. 7:03 - You should do a little how-to-practice video on getting in and out of those rolls! Always struggled getting that just right.

Video idea: Compare the sound of different drum sticks, like try to make each stick sound as good as it can. I bought some super thin sticks and they sound soo good when dropped from 1-2 cm height. And the long ones that questlove uses sounds really bouncy on some ride cymbals when they get to bounce. Try BBQ skewers, metal sticks, painted sticks, and other weird stuff too.

Beautiful kit. Have wanted that aqua satin flame slingerland since I saw the drummer for Cake playing one in their video for "The Distance." Nice to see those ATC's installed right in the control room as well.

As for drums - I was so confused when you've said first it was an old Gretsch :) Anyway, this Slingy sounded so f***in awesome when you played it (also thanks to your tuning and muffling expertise)!!!!

Ha! Thanks! It is a Gretsch though, except for the middle tom.

must feel really weird not bringing the kitchen sink....like going outside not realizing you forgot to put pants on. Do you find that with the incredible amount of stuff you bring that you end up using the same similar handful of stuff over and over again? I did...

Every session is different. I try to bring anything that might be considered appropriate. Sometimes I end up using 4 out of 5 kits I bring and half a suitcase full of perc, and sometimes I’ll bring 3 kits and only use 1.

What do I bring to a recording session... It depends on the situation. This one alt indy band I was in for a while we brought our own drum set. Early 80s ludwig classic maple 10, and 14"toms. 22" stainless steel kick drum. And a tama steel shell piccolo snare. The David Silvera signature model. A nice mix of Zildjains. A different project/session I did.. I brought a pearl world series steel shell snare. I borrowed that snare from a former friend. Great drum, I miss it!! The church we recorded in has/had a Yamaha stage custom. Older model with coated heads. Very lively, lovely sound. Current project... I record with an old Rogers chrome over brass powertone. Tight and crisp. Absolutely love it. The house kit is early 80s Sonor with the round slotted lugs. I loath those lugs!!! Lol. The kit is muffled to death 🤔☹ Oh well not my drums.

Hey Jake, thanks for your videos. What is the BD beater on the pedal at 1:03? Looks extra big, almost as large as the bomber/felt beater underneath it. Looks to be Danmar, but seems extra large in the video. Thanks!
@JakeReedmusic

Yes, it’s a Danmar on the pedal but a big fluffy guy hanging out in the bag underneath.
