I got a N54 out of a 5 series to put in my 335is. the 5 series sucked in a belt and I got it for $1900. Good deal at the moment it happened. All I did was drop the pan and clean made sure nothing passed the pickup tube screen and was able to replace that didn't touch the oil pump. All I did was rod bearings on a engine that sucked in a belt and put a crank seal on. Started with 80,000 mile used engine into a car with 125k miles. I got stock turbos brand new for 600. That's all it financially needed. I ofc found a intercooler and charge pipe mods which on Fb was a good deal. I have put 10k miles on it was. The bad is that i had 12 injectors now to test and reluctantly 6 passed the test. The hpfp on the 5 series failed which was caused by the belt getting sucked and my car just had a brand new hpfp. and i inhereited a fcp euro account with lifetime replacement

As an owner of a MK2 TT, definitely go for the TTS, it is such a nice platform and has a lot of aftermarket support. Ofc the 330e is nice but you are going to be limited a bit with mods as it is a hybrid

if you caught the rod knock soon enough then you can possibly get away with just new rod bearings and don't need to pull the engine just hope the crank isn't scored to bad. s54 engines are recommended to replace rod bearings every 60-100k miles but not the case with s55. if crank is damaged start the year off with a nice write off and get the 5150 s55 stage 2 build kit

You can rent a demo saw from Home Depot and cut the concrete yourself! lol. What you should have just done in your shop is bolted down a tho steel plate to distribute out the weight better. It would of been a temp solution that would of worked well and gotten you by with having to Rip your floor out! We did it in a shop once instead of cutting the floor out. A nice thick 1" big 3'x3' 1" thick piece of steel would have distributed out the weight across a wider area on the thin concrete

hey jake, just letting you know you can have 750whp on stock motor safely. for the s55's the issue isn't horsepower, its torque. single turbo is the best option because the low backpressure is good for the stock rods which is the main failure point when running high tq. my s55 is single turbo and when i was on stock motor and trans i was running 780whp/690tq with 0 issues for over 6 months. an XHP trans tune will also help a lot.

N55s/S55s throw rod bearings when you push too much power or neglect changing your oil, typically there's a knock on the bottom end and glittered up oil so it adds up. If it was my car as a BMW tech I'd throw upgraded rod bearings in it hoping they didn't friction weld to the rods, fill it up with oil and see if the knock is still present. If the knocks gone take it on a couple beat runs drain and fill the oil a few times to get all the metal out and you're good to go. I'd be surprised if it's anything more than rod bearings the rest of the internals on the S55 are forged and can take a beating, not sure why you think the cams need to be rebuilt I've yet to see that working for BMW. Also if you're not a full time mechanic a rod bearing job can sound intimidating but it's a glorified oil pan reseal, once the pans out it's a couple bolts to remove the bearing caps and you're right there. Lucky you with finally knowing better what to do with the m4! I have a e61 525d myself with baad engine sound as well and also metall shavings in the oil filter except that mine makes a very very weird noise that no one could answer but it may sound like something that grinds really bad to each other so am prepared for the worst and maybe have to get another m57 engine for it but i hope it still saveable cause i dont want to replace the original engine for it😮😅 but wi'll see, as yourself with your m4, my e61 has been on standby for that job since april last year😅 cause another bmw E39 and Audi a7 needs to be prioriticed first here😅

The knocking is probably not from the valvetronic system. Considering you found large chunks of metal and metal flakes in your oil i think its safe to say that its your pistons rattling on the inside of your engine. You're not gonna know until you pull the head and look at the inside of the engine. That motor is blown there's no fixing it.
