Awesome chapter. The reason I love arc 7 so much is cause it feels like Tappei has maxed barusu's shrewdness stats and it shows yet again in the latest chapter. It just feels like he's a lot more smarter than before. The way he ruled out poison gas as the method of killing, his conjecture on how he is different from the others when they were killed, the way he's tried to figure out Cecilus' character to use him, and how he knew what exactly to say to todd and gauge his reaction rather than getting an answer out of him. Don't get me wrong he isn't the smartest person in re:zero or anything and I know he's always been shrewd but it feels like the previous Subaru would have been tossed around for a lot more loops before even thinking about this stuff. I mean we're only half way into to arc 7 and take a look at the stuff he's done - he tracked rem by predicting her actions with the knowledge he has about her nature - escaped the camp by deceiving todd right after he died by using his experience with sin archbishops to mimic a selfish scumbag that would sell out there own tribe - using his knowledge of snakes and mabeasts, the taboo and all his other cards to beat the Elgina - Remember the layout of the camp because of his interest in it, which would later be useful in the attack - escaping todd by understanding his psychology in Guaral - the entire bloodless siege done with the help of his crossdressing skills - used his knowledge about Olbart's character and his experience in hid and seek to win the game -how he figured out the curse wasn't real (I know it technically is, but he did deduce that Gustav can't invoke it) and how he built connections for his escape by participating in another Sparka. It feels like Barusu is using everything he's got lately and has become a lot more capable and scary What a chad. Yeah.......sorry for the rant

I wasn’t expecting this cross over Im convinced IF it was the curse killing everyone I think he was shielded bu his other curses remember how the Dogs curses were described as tangling each other up? We don’t know if that’s what saved him from Dragon Blood but all these curses were described to have merged into something new just before he first healed his arm after the Elgina fight. He’s been cursed by multiple curses each multiple times, perhaps he’s too cursed to be killed by them

I think it is a curse which scans Od and then applies the effect. Subaru has messed up Od, so it's inefficient, which exactly why the death is delayed.

According to Beatrice, there one rule to all curses that can't be bypassed - the physical contact with the victim. Once it's activated - there's no way to stop it, but you can disable the one who activates the curse. The question is, who has touched every prisoner on the island? Gustav might not be the one who put the curse in the first place.

I'm just going to guess that Gustav lost control of the curse, probably because arakiya kills him. As to why Subaru is unaffected by the curse there's only 2 reasons I could think of, either the dragons blood or all of the curses placed on him by the ulgarm back in arc 2 has given him a psuedo resistance against all curses in general.

ok, i can think of 3 things: 1) arrakya can use spirit magic but of course cant create curses so shes out of the question. unless its poison and she spread it to people by her spirits in every place. in that case though subaru would have recognised spirits actions. shes out of the suspect list. 2) gustav can control the curse. but he doesnt want to use it. however among the conditions theres probably one who is already active: if the owner get killed then the curse will strike. this is to ensure he rules and others wont try to kill him. so, if todd or arrakya killed him, then the curse would have naturally killed everyone else (and well mabeasts too, since the next management would have had trouble if not). 3) subaru resisted the curse just like he did previously. this means his 100 inactive curses he has from arc2 are an advantage here. hes unlikely to die from the curse, but he will still bleed. it would be interesting if he develops some poison resistance too for later on (black serpent will be a nightmare)

I just don't get this situation. You see, some say that Todd has used the curse and went pale when Subaru talked about it. But for the plot, how can this be even possible? Like just think about it. There's nothing that they can do to stop Todd. Nor he can save literally everyone. So that's basically a stalemate. The only reason I think of Todd's reaction is that a curse persists even if curse user dies. So Todd didn't want to take risks, and just killed Subaru who he thought to be a curse user. Suppose we say it's about killing Gustav. Again, they can't do anything about it. They just die if they fought Arakiya Or Todd. If the initial plan of Todd and Arakiya is to kill everyone, then nobody can stop them, even if the curse doesn't work. What I feel is that Todd has no clue of what happened. There might be a unknown person who is doing this (intentionally or unintentionally), and indeed he is defeatable by Subaru and his friends. But Subaru doesn't know him and Todd misunderstands Subaru to be the culprit in every loop.

Subaru is such a great character. Especially because we know what he's capable of via the IF stories, it's a little scary when we see him start to slide a little too close to one of the seven deadly sins, as in this case, Pride (referring to himself as "the only one who could do anything," and "Kenichi's son.". The best part was small, but important, indicating that he still had compassion for Tanza even though he knew he'd have her back shortly. This gives us a small hope that he's not yet too far down the Sin path.

Interesting, but I thought killing the curse user prevents him from activating the curse? Isn't that the entire idea of wiping out the Ulgarm back in Arc 2 (since the curse is still in Subaru, its just that theres no one left to activate it)? I guess it could be explained if this is a more advance curse technique, so advance it almost seems as broken as an authority (reminds me a bit of Wrath). Edit: Thinking about it, its possible that Gustav was mind controlled / manipulated to activate the curse if there is one, so I guess thats that.

(Too many characters, Sphinx is strong, and her relation is more related to Roswaal) What I feel is that, it is the same concept from Arc 2, but this time it scans Od and then applies curse. Since Barusu has messed up Od, the scanning is inefficient and his death is delayed.

@@konoveldorada5990 That seems too complicated and intricate for an island simply meant to contain prisoners and gladiators (what you described sounds like a mechanism you can find on the Pleiades Watchtower or other extremely important heritage sites, not on a colleseum where gladiators fight in, but hey, I can't dismiss the possibility, im just saying). Well whatever it is, it has to be on the island long before Todd and co. arrived (since its almost impossible for them to prepare such a wildscale attack in less than 30 mins without anyone sounding the alarms, plus if Arakiya is indeed helping Todd and had such magic, Tanza would've mentioned it when she was telling the story about when Arakiya attacked Chaosflame) and has to have a trigger. So far, the strongest culprit we have is indeed a very advanced curse, even though I previously dont believe it exist, I kinda have to now. An alternative would be an Authority or a pseudo authority.

Situation Inspection: So it seems like even Todd has no clue on what's happening as he went pale when Subaru said "Curse". So it probably shouldn't be related to Todd or Arakiya. Cecilus is already out of the suspects. So it should be related to Gustav who was plotting something. When it comes to curses, remember that "Sphinx" Can be involved. Though, I don't find any clues on how she is acting behind the scenes. So I keep the suspect least for her. *If Gustav ain't the imposter..* Then it can be something like Arc 1 where curse was passed on by touching. Though, here the case might be a little different. This curse might working on like a "Od" Scanner or something, that once scanned applies the curse. Since Subaru already has his Od messed up, the scanning is incomplete causing the effect to delay. And obviously, Todd has some bad vibes about that, so he just ended the carrier of Barusu.

But that doesn't mean that their original goal of killing everyone will stop. If Subaru stops the curse, then be can be killed and he will loop again. Currently he can't win against Todd, nor save everyone. What I feel is that Theres a random person, intentionally or unintentionally, who can be defeated by Barusu, is doing something that applies the effect. But in every single loop, Subaru survives and Todd thinks he is the culprit. And when he talked about curse, he didn't even take the risk of getting affected, so he killed him. The chances are Gustav is the culprit. Compared to Todd or Arakiya, fighting Gustav would be fairly easy. If Todd and Arakiya wants people to survive, then Gustav can be a common enemy for all the three. So what Subaru can do is hold Gustav for some time till Todd and Arakiya arrives.

Curses require physical contact between the castor and victim. We know Gustov can’t activate the curse and that Todd and Arakiya just arrived on the island so they can’t have touched everyone. But there is one person who has (probably) touched everyone on the island, the medicine man guy. The only question is why him, and why did he activate it now. Also ima agree with the other comments and say that Subaru has a curse defense buff from all the curses the demon dogs in arc two chomped onto him.
