In general I'd agree with college grads not enlisting espec. in career fields with high attrition rates. HOWEVER, sometimes it's worth it. I enlisted with a law degree as a grunt in the 82nd Airborne. Why? I had every intention of going to OCS but the Army said they'd pay off all my student loans if I stayed enlisted for 3 years. 20+ years later I'm an O-5 and the military just paid for my PhD....

Agree in general...it worked out for me. I was enlisted USCG for 8 and then Army just retired O-4. What I tell people can be a problem is after those 8 years now you have a "record". Meaning all your medical crap like blown out knee and stuff has to be addressed when going for O. When people say "I will enlist and then just switch to O" really isn't that simple. It worked out for me, but I don't advise it as a plan. If someone wants to be an O just go straight for it.

@jakezweig what would your advice be for a 22 year old with a bachelor's in kinesiology with a concentration in human performance, rehabilitation sciences, a associates degree in health and fitness, and a minor in human nutrition? Should I enlist or just go for officer, and what branch do you think I should join, I am thinking of just going officer in the air force, since I have family that are officers in the air force, but I just was wondering what your opinion would be, and if I was an officer would I be able to get the military to pay for me to go to college and get my doctoral degree in physical therapy, and woul I be able to be an officer and work as a physical therapist?

My hip did the same thing as I was training for SOAS. It was chalked up to Snapping Hip Syndrome, Lots of stretching, and hip mobility. I also switched to riding a bicycle during the recovery time. SOAS is no joke. I made a lot of great friends and the 2 weeks I spent there will never be forgotten. It is a bonding experience like no other. Yes you are competing for a spot to go to OCS, but everyone who I know who was selected, including myself, was a team player. We yelled at one another, carried one another, out worked one another... make yourself standout. You may just want to put your head down and try and grind though it... but that's not what they are looking for in an officer. You have to keep your head up and lead. When they put someone in charge of a mission ; for example, when they make you take the boats out to the ocean and you are racing against all the other boat crews, and your team is constantly coming in last or second to last, stand up and take charge of the crew. Tell them you are going to lead. Make sure you inform your team that you are the leader and to listen to YOU only. The part that boat crews mess up with is everyone there at SOAS is there to be an Officer and a leader, so everyone in the boat crew thinks they know what the best choice is during your mission. This causes the entire mission to fall apart because everyone is telling everyone something different( usually everyone yelling different commands). If you just stick to ONE person giving orders, then you will have a better chance of succeeding. If you aren't in charge, don't worry, you will get your opportunity. You just have to speak up when the opportunity presents itself. Do not get discouraged when you see half the class dropout the first 2 days. If you make it to Wednesday you have a really good chance of making it through to Friday. Only a few people dropped out after Wednesday. And only 1 on the final day, and it wasn't due to him quitting, he made a bad decision and the SOAS instructors deemed him not mature enough to be a leader because he put men at a huge risk for injury. Make sure you EAT!! you will be so exhausted and worn down you will no longer have an appetite. I saw so many guys not eat and as a result they were collapsing throughout the week. Hydrate! you will have an endless supply of water, hydration packets, and food. They will never turn you down for asking for more nutrients. All in all, great time, great people, come prepared physically and mentally. You will be accessed on your speaking skills, writing skills, and memorization. After 3-4 days of maybe an hour of sleep each night... simple memorization gets tough. SOAS is a great time, grueling during...but after you feel such an accomplishment. Oh also...the water during the summer in Coronado is still super cold, especially when you are hanging out in the ocean in the middle of the night instead of during the day. DO YOUR COLD TRAINING! Get mentally ready for that!

@Local While having its place... weight-training is not quite as important as you might think. Imo.... a much better way to prepare is to start doing Ruck Marches (aka, Humps)... ...with at least 30 to 50lbs and gradually work your way up to going at least 10 to 12 miles or whatever weight / distance that you can handle and start off with. The reason I say that is because imo and experience, very little in the way of "Weight-Lifting" translated over to Rucking and especially the wearing of other tactical gear (aka, "battle rattle")... ...which YOU WILL BE doing and wearing plenty of once you make it out to a Team or any other Combat-Arms MOS. More to the point... the majority of people that you will see washout will be because they cannot handle and will fail Rucks and otherwise carrying and wearing heavy loads / load-bearing exercises. So... getting use to doing long Ruck Marches as well as doing other Load-Bearing or Load-Wearing Exercises by wearing anywhere from 30 to 100lbs of gear... ...because you WILL be doing alot if that once you make it out to a Team or other Combat Arms MOS. I guarantee it.

Was set to board after graduation with the Army but ended up re-enlisting with the Air Force out of loyalty thinking that I would commission from within. Within a year I boarded and was selected. Took them 3 F’n years to get me OTS dates. Swiftly after getting my dates, my supervision ended up pulling my package behind my back with no paperwork. Total BS. Should’ve gone Army. Do not enlist with a degree - All it takes is 1 jerkoff in leadership to cockblock your plans out of spite. As soon as I boarded and was selected there was a target on my back and the crabs came out. You will be stuck finishing your contract & you will never get that time back. I could still get out and go Army as an officer - their pipeline is straightforward. But, now I’ve got kids and that changes the math on my plans. Be smart guys. Listen to Zweig - he’s not bullshiting when he keeps saying “Go Army”. They have the best street to officer pipeline.
