To clarify: This video aims to explain why/how certain monsters are chosen to return. As Director Tokuda himself says; it was difficult to bring back Yian Kut-ku because other monsters have been fulfilling the same role in the recent games. This design philosophy will limit which monsters will return in MHWilds or future games after that. The point is not that any monster has a chance to return for any reason, rather Capcom has assignment slots and then decide the best monster option for those slots. As I said in the video, I would prefer mostly returning monsters, and I’m rooting for them to return. But the reality is more complicated. I’m hopeful the roster for Wilds will have many of our old favourites while also giving us some new ones too!

Also Zinogre and Tigrex got a lot of attention in recent games as well as Rajang. ...But not Bulldrome though, I'm fine if it stays out forever XD. edit: them re-introducing Yian-Kut-Ku after finding a spot for him in Wilds makes me wonder "then what is even Quematrice's place to them?". Quematrice probably occupies the role of the big first brute wyvern monster for new players since it isn't a bird wyvern despite its looks. Despite also being fire I'm guessing it'll standout as an intermediate strong solo monster while Kut-Ku will be more on the easier side albeit it travels in packs now so in the new game they function differently due to Kut-Ku being changed. Hence no overlap between their roles.

While this video has a lot of good points i do think it misses some fundamental things which are that the MH devs like to do new and interesting things and they do still value old monsters and concepts. While the devs do like to copy over a lot of monsters between games and the fans more than ever are talking about being bored of returners, consider that World and Rise are fundamentally very connected games and over the past 6 years or so we've only had 2 monster hunter games with 2 expansions. If you look over the history of the franchise, they almost always cut out with the guys from the previous gen while going back and looking at older returners (or simply just new monsters entirely), especially with the main team game. Tri started this trend by cutting out everything pre-Tri, 4/4U had almost no 3rd gen monsters (with GU being an exception for obvious reasons), and World/Rise had almost no 4th gen monsters. When we see exceptions to this rule it's usually flagships, which of course have popularity and marketability on their side. Even now with Wilds so far we've only seen older returners like Rathalos, Kut-Ku, and Congalala, without sight or sound of any 5th gen monsters. There probably will be one or two but I think you'd do well to expect them to try to do different things. A lot of monsters we just naturally assume will return every game might take a break all of a sudden. And about the second point, well the devs do clearly still *want* certain monsters in the game. Teo and Kushala were something they had in mind from the start for World, and Yian Kut-Ku was a monster they wanted to bring back for a long time. They might be stopped by the monster not fitting in, but it isnt just a matter of filling in the gaps left by new monsters. There's some other nitpicks I could go over (I dont feel that the time of big slow monsters like Gravios is over at all), but you do make good points that people need to remember tha tthe prioritiesof the devs are usually very different from the priorities of the fans.

I know GenU is a special thing but it showed everything depends on the cooking time. They had all stashed up and recycled as much as possible to bring us that big of a roster even on a handheld. RE Engine (Rise/Sunbreak and Wilds) enables them to almost copy paste monsters from one game to another since the engine is designed to enable such stuff. This, according to capcom, cuts down on developement time since a lot of code from previous games will be reusable.

Rise really did test a lot of those statements, cause a ton of monsters seem to have been picked to return almost willy nilly. Mizutsune showing up in the Frost Isles still feels like a decision with no thought behind it besides "there's water there" (though granted, I feel like 3U and 4 sorta started that trend on monsters in places where they shouldn't be), and Sunbreak had a grand total of four totally new monsters in the entire expansion, the rest either being reskins or returning faces. Khezu and Royal Ludroth are in the volcanic map just cause cave and water, Basarios is now in a desert, because... Hot, I guess? This isn't even me crapping on Rise's roster, cause the new monsters are pretty cool (Somnacanth notwithstanding) and seeing the old monsters get makeovers is always nice, but the feeling I got from it is that there was a lot less care in the selection.

Basarios does make sense to be on the desert, kinda, it's just the wrong variant, Monster Hunter Online featured Sandstone Basarios, which literally just Basarios with desert rock. Ofcourse we dont know if the ice map will be as open as the desert map but i think its rather likely. As for the speed thing. Making monsters faster is just one way to increase difficulty. Also they made plenty of monsters faster with more AOE attacks in rise like bazelgeuse. Just having gammoth combo her attacks more and giving her attacks more aoe would probably be enough. But also the new jungle apex is also a large and slow monster. I dont think their speed is at all the problem, more so the space, as the devs themslef said

@thenerdbeast73753 ай бұрын
I do believe every monster will get reintroduced eventually for a crucial reason but it might not be what you expect. When asked why they don't port more older monster hunter titles the Monster Hunter team said they want Monster Hunter to be a game that ever progresses forward and with its development there will be no reason to replay old games. In order to keep that statement true they will need to return old monsters as to justify not porting older titles because no matter how good the new games are some monsters just can't be replaced in our hearts no matter how much they try. As seen by everyone's hype for Kut-Ku and Congalala, returning monsters are huge for hyping up players and I am sure just as many people would be just as excited if they announced Great Jaggi despite it not bringing anything to the table without a rework. Also as seen by a people's displeasure by a lack of Gravios or Great Jaggi or Velocidrome in Rise despite their smaller counterparts being in the game omitting monsters for gameplay reasons can leave players with a negative impression. So yes they do need to return every monster eventually or they will run out of justification to not port older titles.

What I find especially unfortunate is that popularity is still a factor. Flagships, Kushala, Teostra, Raang, they're all almost guaranteed to come back in some shape and form, even if they need to wait 1 generation for it. And while they are "good old reliable", I find certain classic monsters get overdone. I'd love to see a new fire elder dragon, but teostra is always going to take its place. Similarly monsters like Tigrex and Nargacuga, while perfectly fine, really felt like they overstayed their welcome by time Rise was around. And this is a similar problem with Yian Kut-ku. Yian hasn't been gone that long, only 5th gen games it missed. But another monster that fills a similar role but could be SO much more is my own personal favorite: Qurupeco. Qurupeco being able to summon and buff other monsters is wholy unique to it, and in 5th gen with the more open maps and especially in Wilds with packs of monsters being a thing, I don't think there's ever been a better time for Qurupeco to make a return. The only problem is... Japanese players did not like it. I remember seeing polls of Japanese players hating it, and I don't think it's a coincidence that it has not made a mainline appearance since 3U. Qurupeco is a monster of potential that absolutely fits the current game style, but might be left out just because of the fans of Capcom's home country. The same is true for Gigginox. Gigginox is a faster, more active cave dwelling monster, yet Khezu is the one that keeps getting preferential treatment, despite having a very underwhelming fight even in Rise.

I find these interviews interesting, because while we don't know exactly what the dev team's choosing process is, we know from the game files roughly what order the monsters are conceptualized and subsequently added. Capcom has an EM number designated for every monster which roughly correlates with when they were conceptualized (they have ideas for a monster and they put all the ideas and files for that concept into the EM folder). For example, Rathian was the first monster ever made for the franchise and she's designated as EM001 in every single Monster Hunter game. Lesser known is that specific games also have an internal game-based ID that roughly correlates with when their files were implemented. In World, Anjanath is both EM100 and internal ID 000, because he was the first monster conceptualized for the game, and the first monster that is referenced by outside files in all the other file entries. Entries in every other file start with Anjanath because he was the first entry they added to all those other files to test how other functions would work (part breaks, random expedition spawns, investigation monster pools, etc). Based on this, we know that in World most of the Forest cast were made first in-tandem with the Elder's Recess, because it goes from the Ancient Forest cast (IDs 000-009) to the Rath subspecies (010 & 011), to the two Diablos (012 & 013), to all of the non-Nergigante roaming Elders (014-018), and then you go straight to Lavasioth (019) and Uragaan shortly after (022), well before Jyuratodus (029) and Radobaan (035) were added. This is despite the fact that we know from interviews Jyuratodus and Radobaan were planned first. (Do note that different team members probably worked on different monsters at the same time, but big gaps in the list tend to imply different stages of development.) The best explanation for this discrepency imo is that, contrary to what some people might think, the entire roster and their practicality is planned out extremely early in development, and they just work on whatever is ready to start being added. Ancient Forest was the starter map, Elder's Recess was the "endgame" map, and all the other locales and their monsters were added in to fill the midgame. The those locales were ready to go first, hence why Uragaan and Lavasioth were prepped before their lookalikes. Similarly, Deviljho and Lunastra's file designations are right in the middle of the other base World monsters (020 and 017 respectively), which implies they were nearing ready-to-go status pretty early (earlier than Nergigante even, who is 025) and were purposefully held back specifically for the TUs, not because they weren't ready. In all honesty the entire monster roster for Wilds was probably decided on back when Iceborne's TUs were winding down and they were looking at the practicalities of what to add, how it would fit, and how they could implement it. If your favorite isn't in, it's way too late for much to change now.

I feel the more pack raptor monsters from rise should become endemic life to give them a chance, but them as small monsters is meh in my opinion, but with these whole bigger maps and biomes I really hope they do bring back some older monster's that were really loved and popular, but giving us some new monster's is nice too and we don't know what DLC or DLC's they'll give us after wild's release so here's hope to bringing back some classics.

I find the quote at 3:00 funny cuz like... Yeah obviously Lavasioth isn't popular, it's just Jyuratodus but swims in lava (Well, technially is the opposite, Jyuratodus is just a water Lavasioth), Jyuratodus is just a boring monster and it's only redeeming quality is it's MR armor looking so fucking good, making Lavasioth part of the main story wouldn't have done anything to make him more popular
@heaven643 ай бұрын
It's a boring monster with a boring look that we have already seen in that same game and that has no use in the story. Meawhile, an Agnaktor would have been really cool :)))))))

It's amazing how many monsters allready exist in the franchise. Back in Tri, we had a saying, you have to like every monster, cuz there is so little of them. If you disliked one monster in the game, then you basically dislike 1/10 of the whole game.

In the main series (mh1, dos, tri, 4, World and Wilds) I think they will keep this philosophy of putting monsters in the game to fill gaps in the gameplay, this is very clever and makes the game feel like the same series, but a continuation with many new monsters, but I hope they use the portable series just to do fan service and explore new mechanics, like in GU, Rise and put all the monsters in there, with a very arcade and classic MH feel, to celebrate every monster
@FieryAnubis3 ай бұрын
Ehh, I know why: FOCUSING ON GRAPHICS AND FIDELITY Yes, that's the issue. They could have included 50 in base, but gotta up the fidelity and graphics each time which means extra work which means even more bugs to fix which means even more bloat for file sizes. It takes a long time to make a monster, it takes longer if you're doing it in 4K. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
@fatfreedietwater43473 ай бұрын
To be honest, as someone whos played every game and for as long as ive been playing, im a bit impartial to who gets included and who doesnt these days and im really excited to see the new inclusions. HOWEVER, as a massive MH Frontier fan, im even more excited how much influence that game seems to have on the designs for wilds. Im so happy that a lot of the extremely cool ideas from that game are not being wasted. While we may not see many returning monsters from Frontier, Im totally ok with it if they make monsters like Arkveld who is essentially looks to be the spiritual successor to beru/dora/zena

I miss Nerscylla. My first Monster Hunter game was 4Ultimate, it came out at a good time since I was homeless but had a 3DS. And while I was enjoying the game before Nerscylla, it was the Nerscylla fight that really made the game click for me. The way it played dead to try to get you to come close in order to poison you was so interesting at the time. Felt like an actual creature in an actual world.

I would adore if they “remade” monoblos as a fight. I would enjoy if he leaned more on flight seeing as modern diablos does not fly at all. Seeing flying spinning attacks (like meta night from smash) and faster charging where he uses his wings to allow for faster turning and possibly sand based moves using wind pressure. Idk just my preference.

My only encounter with Yian Kut-ku has been in monster hunter stories, but I heard many stories about "sensei". I, as a world baby, can definitely see how Anjanath took over his role. A bunch of frequently reused monsters should sit this one out honestly, like diablos, tigrex, nargacuga, teostra, kushala etc ... I want some home run new monsters design/fight because right now the new monster roster isn't that great outside of the 2 apex (rei dau and uth duna). An improved great macao would be a great addition imo (he's already pretty great but with the generation jump they could do even better).

Kut Ku and Anjanath are both walls, but I feel for very different reasons, Barroth was my first Wall, and each wall has taught me different things. They all force patience, but Barroth taught me positioning. Where to stand to be able to get damage in without bouncing, how close or far to stay so I could react to the charge, etc. Yian Kut Ku, when I finally fought in in 4U, taught me similar things to Qurupeco, about how erratic and unpredictable monsters could be and not to stay too close for too long. Anjanath really taught me how to stay down and the new tells and sound cues World had implemented. Attacks always had tells and a bit of a sound cue but nothing compared to the quality of World, so when Anjanath knocked me down the first time and then proceeded to do his devastating jaw drag move that killed me as soon as I stood up I quickly learned I could stay down and be invincible.

its fucking wild that Zinogre was fought way more since he is in World who sold 20M copies. I think maybe yian will be the introductory monster to dealing with flocks like how dodagoma is for packs, maybe their role is for you to get experience fighting flying monsters and maybe swarms of them like how you use the new large dung bomb to deal with packs but since they fly you wont be able to bomb them as easy so it could teach you to use a flash bomb to knock all the pestering beta yians out of the air before using the new bomb to single out the alpha so that you can deal with later flocks of harder monsters easier having had practice. Even if yian isnt an impressive fight something as simple as having them call for help from their flock to do dive bombs and swipes on the player to cover their escape to the nest when they are capturable or other interactions like that can make the fight far more interesting and difficult without altering the moveset of the monster too much like they would have had to in the previous games since it would have had to be a solo or duo fight. Thanks to the new groups of monsters tho we can expect different difficulty spikes with sheer numbers alone making it more chaotic and stuff, either way im excited

Thank you for this video, because I've always wanted to know what the trend was for bringing back certain features or monsters was, because to me; as a MH Fan that did start with MH3U, but only officially started with World, I thought that these monsters were coming back randomly. With this information I think that even the long lost monsters like Yama Tsukami, Shen Goeran, Ukanlos, Akantor, Monoblos, etc.. WILL come back individually, but be tied to a more interesting ecological behavior or story thread that they can only fill. Ukanlos acting as a stories victim and act as a new Cedaeus with the introduction of Arkveld. Akantor possibly acting as maybe a boss monster with 3 Agnaktor henchmen. Yian Kut-Ku being repurposed as a "seemingly" herd monster now is going to not only be hella fun and cool, but will bring back some incredibly important monsters in more ways than a "boss battle" 1v1-4

Would be surprised they don't bring back diablos. It returns like rathalos. Also, we didn't get Lagi because of issues with the skeleton issues. Regardless if Lagi was there, we still would have gotten Zinogre. Personally, I still done understand why the need to not put 2 monsters who fill the same role in the game. But it depends on the local. There IS a game with both Monoblos and Diablos, 4U. There IS a game with Lagicrus with out water fight. I think the ONLY monster that will never return is Ceadeus.
