He's totally right, Jalan alor targets tourist they want to maximize their profit by selling you the most expensive Durian. The thing is about Musang King or Black thorn they are not really for beginners. The locals like it because has much more complex flavor. They tend to have bit of bitter taste. You should opt for the sweeter durians and they are also cheaper.

It definitely makes sense! Overall, we were really happy with the experience ☺️ I would like to try different durian in the future though
@joshua0111 ай бұрын
@@NewFoundLandsthere are much much sweeter and less or non-bitter varieties (depending on what the vendors have) that are much much more acceptable and pleasant than musang king😅

Glad that you tried the durian. Admittedly, not a high percentage of westerners will like it, but you've got to try it just in case you're one who does. For me, it was love at first bite. And the great thing is that when you burp later, you get to enjoy its flavor all over again. 🙂

hahaha great description! I think we will try it again in the future. Lots of recommendations in the comments for different kinds! When I first tried kimchi, I was not fond of it but after a few tries, I think I am addicted now. Maybe durian will be the same!

You can bring the snacks to the drink stalls and sit down to eat them. The owners won’t mind as long as you buy some drinks from them😊

You should try durian at DurianBB Park. It's not that far from where you guys are. Get the tasting platter. They serve 5 different types of durian on it. 3 of them are black thorn, musang king, and XO if I'm not mistaken. Black thorn is the most expensive, musang king is the most popular, XO is the most favoured by everyone. The other 2 are seasonal. The platter should be around RM70~RM80. The prices there are slightly higher. I wouldn't recommend this place to people who want to EAT durian and get value for money, but it's the perfect place for 1st timers just because of the platter.

12:59 the powder is dried sour plum powder and is usually used for guava, green apples, pineapple or jicama..that was why the vendor didn’t sprinkle it in the first place.. they have something similar in Hawaii called lihingmui powder

How to check whether that durian is Musang king or not, u can check from the fruit itself. Check at the fruit bottom u shld see a big star ⭐️ pattern. Only musang king and black thorn has star on it bottom (black thorn is premium durian and ofc more expensive). Or if they already opened and sell it loose. Normally the fruit is creamy, bitter sweet, very yellowish and has very small seeds.

After reading some comments here (including this description) we are very confident it was in fact Musang King! I would love to try some other varieties but I am happy we started with this. Thank you for the info!
@limt05 Жыл бұрын
As many others have commented, there different varieties of durian. Musang king has a rich, complicated flavour that durian lovers seek; though it might not be suitable for beginners. If you go to the durian places recommended by other commenters you can have a look and choose the other varieties. I would recommend to start with D24 variety; it is a standardized variety delivering consistently mild sweet taste, fragrance and creamy texture that resembles more of custard than gooey snot. Durian kampung is a mixed bag of non standardized variety and their taste, smell and texture might greatly differ even by the same seller. If you are ready for more than talk to the seller and see what they recommend based on your preference ie sweeter, bitter, more complicated and layered taste etc. Most of all, enjoy!
@NewFoundLands Жыл бұрын
This is such great advice! I will definitely try the D24 when I can. Thank you for this explanation!
@dannychee9584 Жыл бұрын
Dont be suspicious, from what i can see from your video, what you are eating is definitely musang king. Durian lovers can almost tell from the seed after the first bite. Jalan Alor usually sell only the premium durians because their rental is expensive. There is a lot more places that sell musang king probably at half the price u paid. Anyway im glad you enjoyed it. Keep up the good video and thank you for promoting Malaysia.

The cheapest durians cost about MYR10 per kg (eg Durian Kampung). If you have limited space like in Jalan Alor (tourist attraction), why would you sell it? People sell the cheap varieties at/near wet markets or from their small trucks or vans or trunk of their cars 😄
