I want to tell you..Malaysia is Malaysia..not everything that is normal for you in America is normal in Malaysia..what is considered as freedom of speech in America is not the same in Malaysia..and there is not a single country in this world that practices freedom speak fully..everything has a limit..and your understanding in malaysia cannot be equated with americans..actually being too obsessed with freedom of speech is the reason why the people are not able to unite and live harmoniously and respect each other..look at America..so we don't allow beliefs or opinions that can harm religion, race and culture in Malaysia..remember you have to respect the host even if you don't agree with his country..Malaysians don't go to foreign countries to always talk about that country especially things bad in that country..not to mention speaking in public..because it can influence some people..this is just advice don't misunderstand brother..love from Malaysia ❤🇲🇾😊

UPDATE: Ben have edited and deleted certain parts of the video so the original comments below might be a bit out of the picture. Universiti Malaya isn't perfect, but calling it a 'scam' is just irresponsible. Coming from Eritrea, one of the least developed countries even by African standards, where their best university isn’t even close to 9,000th place in world rankings, and then calling UM a 'scam'? Really? There are hundreds of students from more developed countries studying in UM including China and they really love the place. He is really ungrateful of UM and the opportunity he got to study outside his country Eritrea (which I don't expect he will want to return and live there).

I think we all need to learn to take other opinions in and see from their perspectives. Personally, I'm grateful that the guy from Eritrea was being honest in the interview. However, as many has said in the comments, the rank is not based on the structures and layouts of the university. It is mostly based on the courses which are being offered there, and the post-graduates' success in finding jobs after they finished their studies. The data doesn't lie, and it's being recognized internationally so calling it as a scam just because you have to walk further than expected sounds unfair. I do agree on his point about giving more attentions to the current students' situations there. If UM is one of the best universities because of the academic aspect, it doesn't hurt to improve on the other aspects as well, yes? I feel like the guy was an honest guy, but lack maturity in making his comments; but at the same time i think it was not his intention to humiliate UM. Hope my fellow Malaysians can show an example by remaining respectful and matured; we aren't perfect and other people's opinions matter too. Thanks for the video Ben, cheers :)

Yup he made a few offensive comments, that are also untrue. Malay might be a very phonetic language, hence makes it consistent and easy to learn, but calling it a language without grammar is a comment that makes him look like an idiot after the offensive comment about UM is a scam. Yes, you can give constructive criticisms like saying "there are rooms for improvement" but flat out calling it a scam is just rude and shows shallow opinion.

UM is the oldest university in Malaysia, but not the oldest campus. As some might already know, the original UM was situated in Singapore before they split from Malaysia. So the current campus was setup in 1962 (if I recall correctly). The oldest university campus is UTM KL campus (Jalan Sultan Yahya Petra, formerly known as Jalan Semarak and Jalan Gurney before that). It was built in 1950s as a Technical College, but later was upgraded until it became a university. So if one is complaining about old facilities, one should visit UTM KL campus. If you want advanced facilities, try Taylor's or UTP. But get ready to pay the big bucks.

Many visitors to Singapore tend to compare it to other Southeast Asian countries, perhaps due to geographic proximity and similar cultural roots across the region. However, this can overlook the fact that Singapore is a highly developed nation with a robust economy and infrastructure, more comparable in cost of living to cities like Tokyo, Zurich, or even New York rather than Bangkok or Hanoi. 😐

Honestly, I think the concept of universities in Malaysia is either really modern buildings or in the woods. My university is huge and we walk a lot to go to places, it's surrounded by untouched forest and wildlife. I see monkeys on my way to class and it's honestly a unique experience & an escape from my city home. I'm sure what the student meant by "the university looks old" is just the lack of maintenance. An older building design is nostalgic but it must be maintained to ensure its glory from decades ago still shine in the modern era. I've friends from UM who are locals and they complained about how disappointing the dorm rooms are in terms of maintenance.

To be frank, I liked the guy from Eritrea. I know he is a bit over the line on calling UM as a scam, but I understand the feeling. You have travelled far to study and what you get (infrastructure-ly) not as what you expected from Top 100 universities. It should be a wake up call to UM to improve the faculty buildings and dorms. Old doesn't always have to be correlated with all the negativity. I do believe if it is properly maintained it would still shine old but pretty. Anyway, he lived here in Msia for 2 years and already thinking of getting a job and stay here. The Malaysia charm is still there guys, don't worry. Is just that the downside from his perspective is his rights and own opinion.
@wanh370325 күн бұрын
Don't expected UM classic dorm looks are like the one from Europe 😂. Even some of oldest universities in Thailand, Philippines and Indonesia have a same vibes. Grew up kids. Explore more. UM are the most progressing education hubs in Malaysia that's why any changes are affecting their cycle. Most of government run education institution in Malaysia are very modern like industrial colleges, schools , nursing colleges, etc

You appear to be among the KZbinrs who frequently post about travel in Southeast Asia, particularly Malaysia. After watching your vlogs for some time, I've noticed that you're getting better at doing interviews. You seemed adept at controlling people's responses in your brief discussion on Malaysia. As Malaysians, we enjoy hearing what people think about our country, both positively and negatively, and we hope that individuals in charge of certain public facilities will listen to their complaints and take the necessary steps to make them better. As a result, feel free to express any grievances so that we can find way to resolve them. Your voluntary aid with Malaysia is much appreciated.
@benfishermin26 күн бұрын
Thanks for your comment. I actually spoke today with the ministry of tourism in Malaysia, they really do like the content, even topics such as "Do Foreigners Experience Racism in Malaysia", because they said it helps them know where to focus their efforts, which was really nice to hear. 😀
@noordinbeldenlex162026 күн бұрын
@@benfishermin -The Ministry of Tourism is not the only agency that needs to know how both locals and visitors feel about Malaysia's public facilities and services. For example, all staff of the Immigration Department, airports, taxis, and Grab drivers should be able to speak English in order to be more approachable or at the at least, to make them smile. City Hall should create more accessible pedestrian routes for the elderly and disabled. maintaining the cleanliness of public areas, including restrooms, by implementing sanctions for trash and controlling the conduct of beggars, especially those from other countries. More cultural events are required to demonstrate tourists to Malaysian culture, more specialised tourism police are needed to guide tourists as well as Malaysian public, and they can think of a plethora of other ideas for improvements. If your interviewees only have good things to say about Malaysia, then these relevant agencies won't have any more work to do to improve and keep providing their excellent services to everyone.

As a Malaysian Malay and did my studies in the UK with short stint in the US, just wanna, say, Eritrea guy wasn't bad at all, he was being honest. I had my plan to go to probably a UK uni which is probably a, few hundred years, old and I was offered to go to Boston too. UK Unis are proud of their tradition and being "old" . UM, probably along the same lines since it was before Mslerdeka, but of course it is not with hundred over years history. As for the way, he says it, well, he is not from our part of the world, we are collective and more, sensitive. He is not, he is even very honest and not even offended when people do not know which country he came from. It is just mindset that has been conditioned along cultural values. I lived ( living and staying) in Germany and Russia before and that was how people speak too. Honest and literally cold. Malaysian may need to get use to it if we want to be more international. As for working in Malaysia and the visa issues. Well, any country would do the same., I remembered during my time I had to justify why I should be allowed to work compared to the UK and EU nationals. Oppss... Well, still he likes Malaysia so, may he get to work here.
