Jazz reflects the very best principles and practices of democracy, harmonizing the interests of the individual and collective to underscore the importance of collaboration and teamwork.
From his first performance on November 12, 1976 (when he was just 15 years old ) Wynton Marsalis has remained committed to touring the United States for the last 40+ years, making 3,555 stops in a total of 597 cities. At almost all of these gigs he has been the last one to leave the venues, speaking with parents and kids and students and citizens.

The amazing thing about the music world is that so few of us recognize the absolutely unchallenged greatness of Mr Marsalis as a trumpet player. So few musicians ever achieve his level of musical prowess. We are fortunate today to have many recordings and even video of great trumpet players like Raphael Mendez..... Dizzy Gillespie....Louis Armstrong....Harry James....Doc Severinsen....Chet Baker....Miles Davis.... Maurice Andre.....Clark Terry and countless others...yet we have Wynton today in his prime as a musician and don't seem to recognize his greatness.

My third try at posting this (too old I guess). May God bless you always Wynton. You are a national treasure. And speaking of things Anglo Celtic, my parents were born in Ireland. We grew up in Brooklyn in the 60’s. But Mom was born a farm girl in Ireland without running water or electricity. In winter months, as a teenager, she would go to England to work as a domestic and send cash home (for a subsistence farmer, there is no better crop than cash). The slights she endured rolled down her back as water off a duck’s. She had her faith, her family, and dancing on the weekends - even during the blitz in London in World War II. Mom and Dad were dead before I could thank them for growing up in a home without bigotry. Dad was a bus driver, union activist, and good man. And while there were challenges growing up in Brooklyn (good friends with rough ways, alcohol, etc.) I had to enter the “real world” as a young lawyer before I heard words that would never have been tolerated in my father’s home. They remembered all too well the stings of being an “annie” or a “paddy” in England. And yes, even after a challenging childhood when many friends went astray, I eventually saw the light (through no merit of my own) and cannot hear Amazing Grace at Mass without tearing up, much to the embarrassment of my dear wife. We’ve been fans and attendees of JALC from the beginning and will always be (my father, RIP, was a great fan of Jazz). And while I never made much as a lawyer (I’m not complaining, I was able with my wife’s help to raise my sons to be fine gentlemen who now recommend music to me, and have all the LP’s I thought were useless!) I will always be a fan of JALC. And should a great fortune come into to my hands (at this stage it have to come from Lotto), then I will become a generous contributor to JALC. PS RIP Stanley Crouch, a master stylist with words as Wynton is with a horn, composing, and arranging.

Amen. Every year for Christmas we would bring our sons to the holiday concert of JALC, even when it was still at Lincoln Center. Wynton’s arrangement of the America’s genius Duke Ellington’s arrangement of the Nutcracker Suite was among the best things I ever saw/heard. (And by the way, RIP Stanley Crouch, a master with words as Wynton is a master with trumpet.) And before the “lockdown” destroyed the small Jazz clubs we would go about a dozen times a year to hear America’s Classical Music. And when Judgment Day comes and that roll is taken up there, Exhibit A for the value of America will be Jazz. The Ever Fonky Lowdown was great, great, great. Lesson? It’s all a hustle and one has to guard one’s soul from being sucked into the hustle.
