As much as I don't like the possibly shadier elements behind this trade involving money, I do like this context. In a league of guaranteed contracts and players not delivering or straight up not being available for years on end, maybe this would make certain superstars to elevate to be truuuly worthy of that kind of salary. I feel like the European players actually have an advantage there, just from a maturity standpoint when it comes to the overall approach to playing basketball as a career. The new owners of the mavs are zillionaires that own a lot of casinos and hotels in LA, trading Luka not only saves them 300 million in a supermax contract but also sending Luka to LA means more people going to the city to watch him play, which means more people spending money in their casinos and hotels (specially other millionaires). This could actually work well for Dallas in the short-term because it gives them more roster balance rather than trying to center everything around Luka when Kyrie and Klay share some of his skillset, which is underutilized. Kyrie will have the ball in his hands more (and he's obviously more than capable of scoring one-on-one and running an offense) and Klay could benefit from more shot attempts, while Dallas improves dramatically on defense and gets a solid scoring option in Davis. On the business side, they don't have to pay 40% of their salary to one guy and struggle to fill in the pieces around him. Dallas now has a strong two-year window for a championship with a balanced roster without having anyone to pay $60 million going forward.

lakers obivously rebuilding around a top playmaker and scorer and mavs just needed a two way top player. basically two teams with almost the same problem. the toic element in this is, that ad is or was injury prone and kyrie was and maybe is trouble prone. that makes the mavs VERY unpredictable. but so are the lakers. doncic alone doesnt do the trick, they still need a very good big man, even more so now.
