JAM - Yamaha MODX Jam with Smart Morph - Friday FUN

We still have the MODX here and after the last session, people were asking about the MODX OS 2.5 Smart Morph feature so I tried to jam something which sort of incorporated that. Only using the MODX sequencer and internal sounds/fx this time, s sort of more stadium 80s jam (yeah sorry, thats just where it went!)

Nice, but you were demonstrating the smart morph feature incorrectly. The screen in which you were working in, with the lines you were adjusting with the super knob, is actually the EDIT screen, where you can modify the smart morph parameters after it has run the AI learn routine. The PLAY screen for smart morph is the first one you showed, where the colored X-Y axis is next to the first four part strips. The idea is that as you play, you change the smart morph parameters that were learned (or that you changed in the edit screen - the one with the lines on it) by dragging your finger around on that colored X-Y axis.

Excellent video! Nick Said it. Your going to be getting sounds your not going to get anywhere else. The sounds I am getting from my MODX are just crazy good and unique. The FMX and SMART MORPH are like a laboratory of FM goodness. MONTAGE and MODX = synth greatness.

MODX is a beast. I think it's been dismissed in some quarters as just a ROMpler. It's a lot more than that.
@DarkSideofSynth
@DarkSideofSynth 4 жыл бұрын
Those quarters who dismiss romplers have no idea about what they're talking about, about fun, and about how to get the best out of any so-called ROMpler or anything else for that matter. if they invested 1% of the time they spend talking crap, they would be making great music and great sounds with pretty much anything.
@jimharris6389

@@DarkSideofSynth Good point! It's not as if ROMplers are duds anyway. Many of them old and new are synthesis powerhouses in their own right even when purely sample based (which is what some people dislike in them, I think)

@@jimharris6389 Haters are gonna hate ;) The same lot hating romplers are probably the same who got flabbergasted when playing a D50 or M1 in the shops back in the day, and now probably own a gazillion samples. It's just an instrument, play it and have fun, folks.

Jim Harris And what about the FM-X engine, with up to 8 operators? A completely separate and discrete synth engine that is also super powerful, and can be combined with the other engine (AWM2) to produce performances/patches of up to a combination of 8 different parts. PLUS Smart Morph of up to 8 FM patches in the FMX engine. Plus 10,000 arpeggio patterns. Plus the ability to modulate with the Super Knob I believe up to 127 parameters, setting individual ranges. An excellent effects section. Motion sequencing. Anyone who characterizes the Montage or MODX as a ROMpler is ignorant of what the instrument is, and its capabilities. The MODX is a badass SYNTHESIZER. An amazing value. And that’s no hyperbole. It’s a serious SYNTHESIZER. It’s not a sample playback module with a keyboard attached. I could rant on, but I’ll spare anyone reading this. The sound quality is superb. The factory patches are excellent. The MODX is a fantastic synth. My opinion, plus some facts. If you love FM synthesis you’ll be blown away by the quality of it in this synth.
@InnerVisions68
@InnerVisions68 4 жыл бұрын
In my opinion, all things considered, I don’t think you can find a better, more powerful and quality bread and butter hardware synth anywhere near what a MODX goes for. To me it’s a classic, for what it is, and I’ve been buying synths since the early 80s, and involved in music production professionally since the late 80s. Haters are gonna hate

I have owned a couple of Yamaha workstations in the past, including a Motif X6 which was the top-of-the-line 60 key workstation at the time. For some reason I have always found Yamaha's way of organizing things difficult to manage. Korg is just the opposite for me (had a M3 and a Kronos at one time), though now I have no workstations at all. This particular board sounds spectacular, though. I suspect that Nick has a lot to do with that.

I love my ModX. Yamaha keep giving us huuuge updates! They’re not like other brands that just sell a product and give a years updates and then off to make a new model and forget what you just bought. The ModX is a serious powerhouse with a lot under the hood. It’s got a lot of menus but the UI/UX is pretty damn solid-an ambitious undertaking. One thing missing from this device is a multi channel output. I’d love to be able to plug an adapter into the back with 4 to 8 analog outputs, not using a computer, for multitracking.

Nice. The big win for me in the 2.5 update was the DAW remote mode (with a bit of config I can control a useful chunk of Cubase direct from the controls) , but yes, I've had lots of fun noodling with the Morph. You're right though, the results can be wildly unpredictable, I find having only 2 or 3 source sounds is the sweet spot.

Starting my 4th of JULY celebration in California with a jam from England...is that seditious? :) :) Great jam and sound. Very powerful synth.
