To add to the list of popular Jamaicans, especially in Hollywood and the music business, i bet you folks didn't know that the actress who did the voice for Lion Kings Sarabi (Mufasa's lioness partner) character was a Jamaican. Her name was Madge Sinclair, and she also played opposite actor James Earl Jones in the movie "Coming to America" as Eddie Murphy's mother. Another native Jamaican by the name of, Carl Douglas, was the singer who sang the 1974 hit song "Kung Fu Fighting", which was re-done by vocalist Cee Lo Green for the movie soundtrack for the film Kung Fu Panda.

@@gatheringleaves You've have typically two types of Jamaicans or people of Jamaican heritage here in the Netherlands. The first type are the ones who end up here without really planning to be here. The second group are people who are professionals who come to the Netherlands to further work opportunities. Regardless, we are very few here,. Coincidentally about a year ago I was in my neighbourhood shopping, Then, I saw a black woman who spoke English very well. My curiosity got the better of me and asked where she was from, expecting here to name an African nation. She was from Kingston, Jamaica! Yes, my neighbour about 5 minutes walk from my house!!

Add Honduras to the list as well, I am a Honduran with Jamaican roots. I tried reconnecting to my Jamaican roots but was met with hostility and condescension to the point where I no longer have interest in my Jamaican heritage!!

@@lcchill Oh, I'm sorry. To be honest outside my family people in Jamaica do not see me as Jamaican either. I speak patois like a native because it literally is my mother language - both parents were born in Jamaica. I look very African, and often in Jamaica people think I'm African until I tell them my family is from Jamaica. Once one Jamaican guy wanted to fight me because he thought I was African ....unbelievable, but 100% true.

When the chef said, ‘there’s nothing like the Jamaican food, nothing like the Jamaican culture’. Being a Jamaican myself I can relate to her sentiments about Jamaica and agree there’s nothing like Jamaican food and the Jamaican culture. There’s something spectacular about Jamaica’s cuisine and I think the scotch bonnet pepper have much to do with it.

I could only stand to watch 5 minutes of this documentary because I was completely offended by the ignorance of assimilation. Technically I would be considered Jamaican American or Jamerican since my entire family was born in Jamaica including my siblings, but I was the only one born up here (US). I eat Jamaican food, speak patois , i have a heavy accent especially when in rage, among many other cultural characteristics. I felt a closer connection with Jamaica than America, but I don't understand how so many Jamaicans like my family can just get up and settle somewhere else, instead of working hard to make their country safer and prosperous. It seems everywhere I go I meet Jamaicans or Jamericans like myself, but never have I meet anyone who planned to go back home and make an impact.

The problem with these types of subjective documentaries are that don't give a proper representation of both sides. You have to question the purpose of the documentary. Its rare you will ever get an authentic documentary reporting on a different culture. How would that benefit America? That's possibly why there are negative comments, perhaps the participants are being portrayed as sell outs? That they are conforming to American culture? That they have forgotten about Jamaica? Some of us are guilty to conforming to the culture of the dominant group but sometimes thats what is needed to get ahead, to become socially mobile.

I would like anyone of you to answer me, when you are saying that you are living in America. What are you people talking about, do you know that Jamaican is apart of North America.Jamaica is the 3rd largest English speaking country in North America behind Canada also the united States, so you guys need to checkout out your geography.People been coming to the united States in 1813 from Jamaica, Marcus Garvey also came here in 1914 along with several of his followers .You need to talked more intelligent like you know what you understand what you are saying,my stepfather living here in 1961.The farm workers program started in 1940s, so you people need to get real with what you are saying. Some people especially the people from rual Jamaica they got really excited over everything, you guys need to go study your geography. There is a lot of very poor areas in the united States,I goes over several places. So nobody can really fooled about the united States, up in New York City, there is a lot of violence, also poor people. In Florida anywhere you goes there is a lot of ackee trees, Mango trees, pear trees, banana plants you named it.You does not missed Jamaica, you can get everything here . Some people who are living in Florida they planted a few trees from Jamaica, so you get if everything here. Some people like the excitements too much, they are trying to speakie spokie.I remembered when I spoke to my father for the very first time, because when he left Jamaica in 1957 to England, and then to the united States in 1970 to New York.I could not believe that the man never changed his language more than so, comparing to some people just coming to foreign.

Once you have passed the age of about 12 and you try to change your accent it will sound fake no matter where you are from. It is unfortunate that so many Jamaicans change their accents as adults. Perhaps they did it as a means of survival in a very prejudiced environment. Any well educated and confident Jamaican never changes their accent no matter where they go in the world. For many decades Cambridge O'Level English was the exam to be taken at High School. In the late 70's English language and later the other subjects were administered by CXC to the same standard. Sadly it is a fact that someone leaving Jamaica after high school who changes their accent it looked upon as a sufferer regardless of any success. On the silly "Huxtables" comment I'll tell you that black people in Jamaica have had opportunities and many black judges have lived in opulence long before 'fresh prince'. I mean hell...the first black Jamaican Barrister trained at Middle Temple was in the 1800's. Don't get me wrong, the marginalised Jamaican's who get a break and emigrate to the US to live as expats are loved by us all. We are happy for them. But truthfully that ought not to dictate the narrative. Condescending media in those countries are all to happy to dictate the narrative by using them. They not interested in showing the world black 'judge Huxtable' living in Jamaica in ostentatious style for generations. The agenda is always skewed.

Thank you!!!! I agree with you on the accent issue. However, you are even more lenient than I am, because my cut-off age is about 10 years old. I am a teacher, and I was in a workshop where another Jamaican teacher claimed that she had trouble with English when she came to America, because we speak another language! Man, I had to 'take her on.' That is even worse than the fake accent!

Well I live in Canada and came here at the age of 11 years old. I lost my Jamaican accent in a few years because of school. I don't think I need to keep my accent to try to prove anything, I am still Jamaican. Some of the Jobs here they would prefer if you don't have an accent (like customer service). I think it's good to be versatile!

People forget that a "Jamaican american" gave the world breakbeat which spawned all the most popular genres of music in the world. But yea, I've never understood all these "x-american" labels. It's worse here in the UK where you're "afro-Caribbean" despite being generations deep, born, bred and speak cockney.

It's not as bad as you think. Many ethnic groups that take pride in the nation they're ancestors come from call themselves similar names. Irish-Americans, Italian Americans, Native Americans, etc... It doesn't make you any less American to do so. It just embraces your heritage.

Matter of opinion, really. My grandmother was born and raised in Kingston and love her roots, but she has no problem calling herself Jamaican-American. Nothing wrong with claiming both countries at the same time, especially if you see fit to still live here.

That Mobay Uptown restaurant is now closed. The food was not good. There is Jamaican restaurants in that area that was there before and after because the food is consistent and good. U can't have a restaurant that everytime u visit the food taste different. What's wrong with saying Jamaican-American? U have Irish-American ect. When u r born in the US and both ur parents r Jamacian u can have dual citizenship like most other countries. Don't knock other people's stories.

4:24 Alicia Keys has no roots in Jamaica. “A lot of people believe I’m part Jamaican, though I’m not. I’m definitely black and Italian and a little Irish or Scottish”. - Alicia Keys. No need to claim her when we have local talent on the island as well as successful singers in the diaspora. Please do more research before making these documentaries. Thank you.

They were allowed to come here in mass in the 60's. What was going on in America then, the Civil Rights movement. They were allowed to come to here to displace Black Americans, cheaper labor. Many of them see themselves as some how better than Black American. Lets understand what's what here. Why are they not fighting to make Jamaica better?

Understand this hannibal 1 it was Marcus Garvey who started the civil rights movement here in America. Telling black folks to stand up and demand your rights. Letting black folks know that we can accomplish anything just like the white man, it was Garvey who. Inspired people like Malcolm X and king they said it themselves, we are the same people , the only difference is the boat stop , we are all desendants of African slaves
