He had fame, wealth, women. Yet, he cared about the human condition and tried to help out. 84 years old now, a true American hero. We need more like him. Did anyone notice on Colbert the main, number one energy he was emitting? I did. KINDNESS. A close second display was HUMILITY. Thank you.

I heard this song first time when I was very young, in my family house. I remember trying to sing it along, phonetically, I did not know English at that time, and my older brothers and sisters laughed. Thank you for the upload, it brings me back to my lovely childhood.

Harry Belafonte was the whole package: immensely talented, wonderfully handsome, and charismatic, too. What a man! I wonder how many women sat next to their hubbies in their suburban living rooms, watching this show, and silently swooning over beautiful Belafonte. And how cool is that set? A lot of trouble was taken to make it look just right. Love that ocean background!

well, people said music is borderless plus timeless language aren't they. I always remember how my pop humming this song with guitar on his hands, and no, he doesn't have any English capability, as neither do I back then, still we fell in love with the melody. Hope it will live forever :), at least I'll make sure it would in this period

My father was a Merchant Marine the spittin' image of Harry, and wherever he went people asked for his autograph. I could still see the smile on dad's face as he tried to convince them that he was not Harry Belafonte. as time went on people started telling me I looked like Shari Belafonte...I definitely had her forehead, I think I grew into it though..lol. Mr. Belafonte was and is a prize to the civil rights movement and a true humanitarian. May God continue to bless him and his family.

Thank you for your music and the life you are living. You have given so much to help promote a better world. From your support to Martin Luther King... to your work in bringing down the apartheid regime in South Africa... to your continued work and support for social justice. Thank you. Singers like Jay-Z who gave a mere $6,000 to charity last year could learn from your benevolence, generosity, and commitment to making the world a better place.

Lovely.........Brings back so many memories of youth and hope. I did see him in Pittsburgh, PA at the Vogue Terrace night club and he must have been all of 19 or 20 years old. Gave a electrifying performance and I remember every detail of it as if it was yesterday. Astonishingly good in all of his performances.

Mr. Belafonte a revered, enjoyed favorite of mine before any time had even passed. Instant embracing of his voice and flavor of a human being when I first heard him in 1956. Treasure, treasure. Being a part of the era that recognized the enormity and significance of his song and lovely, smart personality alongside Makeba, etc. is a wonderful to have as my personal history. So many YT sites with Belafonte have posts saying they cried seeing him on Colbert---their little duet melted my world.

Which primary school was that? You must have had a cultured music teacher to teach such songs.
@Niray1197 жыл бұрын
Dewsbury Road Primary, in Beeston, Leeds... we were taught loads of songs, never thought it was different from any other school though... they knocked the school down eventually, because of asbestos. A pity. It was a fine school and a fine old building... there are lots of songs I remember vaguely from my childhood, but cant track down because I've got too little to go on.. there was one song about 'putting your clogs on', and another called Apoosky Doosky, all drowned in the momentum of history...

Dear prgarbs and the rest: I just saw Colbert....with Belafonte. Gorgeous, just gorgeous humanity. I teared up when Harry sang and Stephen sang; just exquisite and genuine. I saw this TV show when it was aired about 1957? (the one here on YT). I was 6 years old when the tune came out in '56. Everyone in my small town embraced it. I lived in a conservative, all white, Midwestern Indiana village really. The immediate kind, true and enlightenment we felt then resonated on Colbert tonight.

@HeardTheSound Mr. Belafonte reminded us all of how much there is to the human psyche, heart and life experience that is conveyed through intelligent, genuine and loving expression. He demonstrates it all in a wonderful many-layered manner beyond his fantastic music. I miss those ways...what has happened to people? I'm in my 60th decade; I have reason to ask. Cheers, Mr. B!

Colbert and Belafonte singing in harmony was pure magic. It was just so spontaneous, and you could tell Colbert was out of character because he wasn't smiling at all, just staring straight at Belafonte. The way he did the harmonies was unbelievable. The mere fact that two human beings can produce such beauty - completely spontaneously - gives me hope for humanity.
