NEW YORK -- One person was killed and four others were hurt in a shooting at New York City's West Indian American Day Parade in Brooklyn on Monday, police said.
The five victims were shot when a gunman "fired his weapon numerous times into a crowd" in Crown Heights, NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell said. A 25-year-old man later after being shot in the abdomen.
Police sources said a 69-year-old woman was also shot in the back shoulder, a 64-year-old man was shot in the right arm, a 26-year-old man was shot in the head and a 16-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to his left arm. All of the victims were transported to Kings County Hospital.
The NYPD is still searching for the suspect, who is described as 6-foot with a slim build, and last seen wearing a bandana over his face and a brown shirt splattered with paint. The suspect is believed to be in his 20s.

The most embarrassing part about this is how we publicly form opinions of ourselves and others who look like this. We in the Americas (that includes Carribeans) should be smarter than this. 1st of there are cameras dam near on every corner in this city. Police presence was heavy. It takes a specially trained person to off 1 let alone several in broad daylight and get away with it. No witnesess and no suspect. Also, the parade continued on. How many mass shew-tins have you heard of where they didn't evacuate, shut down events and secure perimeters? They had no reason to waste resources, time and money. We have seen THEM at many of our initially peaceful protest, and in undercover agitators to start fights, fires, and vandalism. Then they used the mainstream media to push the narrative of us being incapable of peace. They will keep doing it until we stop taking the bait and be prepared to counteract these shenanigans at out events.

The incidents may not happen directly on the parkway but it’s surrounding the festivities and the days leading up to it. Sad. I was standing in this exact location about 2-3 hrs after it happened and it was like it never happened. They cleaned up and everything went back to normal. We knew it happened but couldn't figure out where because everything was back to schedule. Prayers to the family of the man who lost his life and speedy recovery to those injured. 🙏🏾

I was explaining to a friend that when you play mas in Trinidad, it's not a free for all. Only if you registered with the band and fully paid for your costume do you participate. Security is very tight. All masqueraders are between ropes on both sides, manned by security. No outsiders can come and play with us.

And I can guarantee you, it was some 20+ year old who did that ; and when you look at the video you can see a guy running with a hoodie on looking like he was tucking something in his waste bad as he was running. Some of these people are only out there because there's a crowd of people and women, they ain't there to enjoy themselves, caribbean people come out to have fun and go home in peace. It is such a bad stain on us when these things happen year after year . Innocent people get hurt, maimed, or die out there over senselessness. If you need a gun out there, then you have no business out there, stay in ya house, from the time you out there with a gun, you put innocent people in harm's way ! The costumes - music (soca music) needed to accompany the masqueraders are all being diminished bit by bit. I read somewhere and heard from someone I know who works for WIADCA that alot of the Costume Bands have packed up and went to Hollywood - Miami & Toronto... all because participants are scarce because people have complained in the past of no room to masquerade because of the random people infiltrating the various mas bands etc... Sad but true.
