The driver mentioned some half-truths and missed on the nuances of what really Nairobi is about. I'll clarify some. Westlands is generally more affluent relative to other Nairobi neighbourhoods but in all fairness, there are informal settlements, working class, middle class, upper middle class and rich neighbourhoods all over Nairobi whether East, West, North or South. Muthaiga is the most affluent neighbourhood in all of Kenya. It is an old neighbourhood and represents old money. Karen is a very affluent neighbourhood in the South of Nairobi and quite a distance from the centre of Nairobi, at least 30 minutes drive and mostly represents new money. This is where the current President lives, the former Prime Minister, the official residence of the Deputy President of Kenya, most top millionaire businessmen and politicians live there. Kitisuru, Runda, Nyari, Riverside, Gigiri (where most embassies are located) are other affluent areas in the West part of Nairobi. Having said that, Eastlands is the pulse of Nairobi city, it is the most populated and where the vibe is. It is a mix of working class, lower middle class and middle class neighbourhoods. There are tonnes of pubs and clubs, malls and in many instances represents what your average Nairobian lives his life. The North of Nairobi is pretty much the same as Eastlands but not as populated. It also has the country's only freeway road system called Thika superhighway. It is worth checking it out. There are malls along the highway and it stretches for a whole 50 km. The South is where you find the Giraffe centre, Karen Blixen museum, Bomas of Kenya (where Kenya's rich heritage is showcased in song and dance), Shedrick Animal orphanage where you can see young elephants and of course the Nairobi Narional park/Safari walk. There are tonnes of stuff to do in Nairobi and if you like the night life, it is even crazier. Fun fact: Reggae/dancehall music is big in Kenya and every Jamaican artiste worth their salt have visited at least once, many multiple times. Shenseea will be performing in October. There are reggae themed nights in many clubs all over town. Let me stop there. Enjoy your stay in Nairobi/Kenya.

Nice video! By the way, it occurred to me to point out someone in case she might be of interest. Her name is Kerry-Ann Makatiani. You may have heard of her. She's a prominent businessperson in Nairobi. She's Jamaican and married to Ayisi Makatiani, another prominent businessperson. If you're interested, you can watch Jamaica's interview that came out 2 years ago (What’s It Like Being a Jamaican Living in Kenya?). But you may already know all this. I had forgotten about Ms. Makatiani until a day or two ago. A couple of years back I read that her husband had taken a job in South Africa. I therefore don't know whether this affected her location (if he's still there). Anyway, just thought to mention it. 😀

At this rate, I think Uber drivers should receive some training regarding Nairobi's history and have some general knowledge regarding the city. Most of them give false information to our visitors. But I think they're still on a learning curve. Chris Kirubi was a Kenyan businessman.

Good to understand the history of the city as a colonial settler city and how it's original planning according to race affects the modern city. So wealth distribution follows same pattern. Eastlands is unique because it was mainly Jewish owned dairy farms, which during decolonization, the transfer to new buyers didn't go well, so lack of ownership documents means poor planning and enforcement. Also notice, the more "affluent" areas have a slum nearby. These are usually descendants of former farm workers who were housed in informal "villages" just outside the farms. Similar to what you see in former slave plantation colonies too.
