@@HummingbirdJa I've seen a lot of media at the event and I know that they mention Robotics Competition in most media sources, BUT... sadly they do it in such a way that it doesn't attract any attention. For some reason they just don't know how to deliver such information and a lot of positive stuff that's been happening in Jamaica goes unnoticed, while violence is always highlighted at the front page. I have noticed recently Gleaner has been publishing a lot of newspapers without any violence (!) at the front page! I wonder if that's because they are finally changing their policy. 🤔

@@faithm2535 Hello Faith, I posted a pretty lengthy comment about my experience pursuing STEM when I was in high school. You'll find it as a recent comment. JIS interviewed my club twice at: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iXnSe4NulKyfjZo and kzbin.info/www/bejne/l4bRiqKEpbSVidU. Revisiting those videos, Irina has 6x the views in 6 days than those videos combined over the past 2 years. It really highlight's Irina's point that the content and PEOPLE do exist but the large media doesn't report / push it like other content. I'm always willing to talk about my experiences as a student pursuing STEM and it's my dream to make STEM more popular / mainstream in high schools and Jamaica overall. I'm very passionate about the subject but it feels hard to find locals who share the same passion and also how to navigate it.

I'm a retired educator, and the kids start as early as the Kindergarten with manipulatives, and by the fourth grade, they will compete within different schools in their district. STEM is very important on so many different levels, and when they start college, it will help them become an engineer/ programmer. If they decide to move abroad, it will be an opportunity for greatness because it's the technology used in first world countries. STEM runs the world, and I will support this cause. Hello Irina! This is the BEST coverage of our local FIRST Robotics Competition!! I promise you cannot believe how happy and excited this makes me. This comment will be a bit long but I want to share my story so others can see how impactful STEM can be. I went to Herbert Morrison Technical in Montego Bay, where I got my first real taste of STEM in grade 10 doing the mechanical technology program. Before grade 10 I'd always see the terms 'STEM' and 'engineering' thrown around but never quite understood what it was all about and went into the MechTech program on a whim as the older students told me it was a good class to join. My journey really began when we got our first assignment to research famous engineers and what engineers do. That assignment changed everything for me and in a very fundamental way too.. Up until that point, I was like most students just going through the motions of getting good grades because you're supposed to. Working on that assignment however and seeing the world of possibilities, unlocked / lead to a fiery passion that burns brightly to this day. I was so enthralled by what I discovered on KZbin and other sources that I, along with some friends dove head first into forming our school's first engineering club right then and there. Our MechTech teacher, Mr. Coke, loved what he saw and supported us from the very beginning. We gradually learned more about the subject and got our start doing welding and electrical jobs around the school, repairing desk & chairs and electrical fixtures. The club's first competition was the PCJ Renewable Energy science competition and we came 2nd place in our debut! The grand prizes were cheques and the school getting a grant to install solar panels. We believe we lost points due to the documentation and maybe nerves during presentation but our model was SO GOOD that the Minister of Sci & Tech at the time, who happened to be in attendance, personally awarded us with effectively the first place prizes as well! Coming from our little school in Mobay and seeing the suits and ties genuinely being impressed with our work give my team and I a surge of confidence. We got the solar panels and 2 signs were erected acknowledging our success, they still stand today. We were also featured in the newspapers. Since that first competition we haven't looked back! We worked on a number of projects throughout High School but by the time we were in 6th form we decided that we wanted to extend the reach of STEM in Mobay but we had(and still somewhat) no idea how. We realized that going without lunch in the days and saving wasn't sustainable, especially considering shipping costs and our small club dues could only do so much. We settled on doing fundraisers of sorts and eventually started a business where we sold things using our skills. It isn't easy but our passion pushes us through the difficulties. I'm in my 2nd year of university, studying mechatronics engineering and the club has grown a lot since. We didn't know about the local FIRST competition when I was in High School but we're looking to participate. I'm still very active with the club as I don't think I can ever let it go. I want to continue to inspire youth and have them get the same feeling / passion I got upon discovering what the world of STEM was like. I really love this field. We have worked to turn that club business into a real registered business and though it's tough, we stick through it to support the club and students. If anyone wants to check the club out you can find us on Instagram @hmths_engineering_club and see some of our projects. We also got interviewed by JIS here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iXnSe4NulKyfjZo and kzbin.info/www/bejne/l4bRiqKEpbSVidU. If you'd like to see and support the business we can be found @genr8_3d on Instagram or genr83d.com/ Please reach out to me if you'd like to discuss sometime or just to ask questions in general. I really enjoy sharing my passion and would love to do more in the community!

Thank you for broadening and by default redirecting the focus-to better reflect that which is Jamaica. With great delight, my family and I, wife and our 9 and 8 year old sat and watched this. This is the jamaica that I want fed into their subconscious. Again thank you very much!

I would challenge the academics of any north American high school against a Jamaican high school and see which comes out on top. I would put money on Jamaica. But as they say, he who controls the mainstream media, controls the narrative. Big up Jamaica..well done!!👏🏾👏🏾💞🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲

Dear Irina, this is brilliant on so many levels. Ok, so Jamaica and other countries missed out on the riches of the industrial revolution which we cannot go backwards and complain about. However, the future is definitely the design and build 21st century robotics! Awesome video! Watching from the UK 🇬🇧. More of this please.
