"I can reach it, Dad." "Indiana. Indiana... let it go." Perhaps the most meaningful moment in a father-son cinematic relationship. The father and son, who never spoke to each other, search for the father's obsession. And when it mattered, the father tells his son to let it go and calls him by his preferred name to save his life.

“You know how long I’ve been looking for that?” “All your life?” “All my life” The cleverness of the script made it fun and exciting but also really impressive with its deeper themes, the beginning of the film focused on Indy finally getting The Cross of Coronado, something he’d spent most of his life trying to find, and in the end of the film Henry Jones catches up with The Holy Grail, something he too had spent a lifetime attempting to find. In the very end, with the Grail in plain view, but frustratingly just out of reach, both men finally understood what they had both actually been looking for, each other, father and son. It’s a great scene, and the reason why the 3rd film is my favourite…..along with John Williams magnificent score.

I’m a devout Christian. And The Last Crusade is my favorite installment because the sought after artifact is the Holy Grail and even though Indiana obtained it and used its divine power to save his father, and though it was lost, both Indy and his father left with something more important, His illumination. God be you.

Over my lifetime I've probably consumed around 95% of Williams's work, but this right here is his best theme in my opinion. Magically compelling, mysterious, and powerful, like the Grail it represents, no matter which section it is played by.

That Holy Grail motif (thank God I have a name for it now) is arguably one of the best emotional powerhouses in cinema history, probably alongside the original Indiana Jones theme. In my mind, it has always conjured up the majesty of the 'Christian Empire', the history that spreads thousands of years into the past. I'm an atheist, but I can't help but imagine the gates of heaven opening when that tune plays, as if you're being absorbed into the golden light of the Lord himself, and your cares are gone. It also reminds me of my dad, who has passed away, and our shared love for this film. We never got to find our Holy Grail, but hearing that tune makes me imagine the times we could have had :') I really appreciate you putting this together, it's some of my favourite music
@chance36113 жыл бұрын
I am an atheist as well and I do agree that this motif expresses thousands of years of christian history. I remember repeatedly watching this movie on the VHS tape and hearing this tune, so glad I found it.

The Grail Theme motif is copied note for note, and is used twice by composer Thomas Newman in the movie The Shawshank Redemption. The first instance is at the end of the scene where Warden Norton supervises the guards tossing Andy's cell. The Warden leaves the cell with Andy's Bible, and the theme plays when the warden hands the Bible back to Andy and says "Salvation is found within." The second instance of the theme is when Andy is in the Warden's office, and sees the sign hanging on the wall that says "His judgment cometh and that right soon."
@vincentcaleb48764 жыл бұрын
Wow, I thought I was going crazy! I noticed this too! It is in the minor second leading to the note c in Shawshank, so they changed the key, but it is still the same melody. Oddly enough I couldn’t find it in the soundtrack for Shawshank anywhere.

The sounds at 5:05 make me think of a mix of the underwater scenes of Naboo with the Gungans and something I can’t quite put my finger on. Something holy or almost “classical” like Mozart. Hmmm. It’s the part right when Indy sees the 3rd task, the Leap of Faith.

John Williams is a brilliant movie composer. The music to the Grail is very biblical as it's meant to be. When I first went to see Last Crusade the Grail music was on my mind for ages. A brilliant piece of work by John. My favourite Indy movies are those that deal with a biblical artefact and the nazis. Raiders and Last Crusade. I love the beginning of Dial of Destiny because indy has to deal with the nazis and the lance which turned out to be fake.

The relationship between a father and son is so very important. Something modern day media ignores. It's all about women empowerment and trash. We need more stories like this. I know this is only a movie, but fathers and sons are also important. Fathers mold their sons into men. Men who are strong and much wiser. Here's to all the fathers and sons out there. You matter and have value.
